单选题Everyone has a moment in history, which belongs particularly to him. It is the moment when his emotions achieve their most powerful sway over him, and afterward when you say to this person "the world today" or "life" or "reality" he will assume that you mean this moment, even if it is fifty years past. The world, through his unleashed (释放的) emotions, imprinted itself upon him, and he carries the stamp of that passing moment forever.
For me, this moment—four years in a moment in history—was the war. The war was and is reality for me. I still instinctively live and think in its atmosphere. These are some of its characteristics.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt is the president of the United States, and he always has been. The other two eternal world leaders are Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin. America is not, never has been, and never will be what the song and poems call it, a land of plenty. Nylon, meat, gasoline, and steel are rare. There are too many jobs and not enough workers. Money is very easy to earn but rather hard to spend, because there isn"t very much to buy. Trains are always late and always crowded with "service men". The war will always be fought very far from America, and it will never end. Nothing in America stands still for very long, including the people who are always either leaving or on leave. People in America cry often. Sixteen is the key and crucial and natural age for a human being to be, and people of all other ages are ranged in an orderly manner ahead of and behind you as a harmonious setting for the sixteen-year-olds of the world. When you are sixteen, adults are slightly impressed and almost intimidated by you. This is a puzzle finally solved by the realization that they foresee your military future: fighting for them. You do not foresee it. To waste anything in America is immoral. String and tinfoil are treasures. Newspapers are always crowed with strange maps and names of towns, and every few months the earth seems to lurch (突然倾斜) from its path when you see something in the newspapers, such as the time Mussolini, who almost seemed one of the eternal leaders, is photographed hanging upside down on a meat hook.

The English, as a race, are very
different from all other nationalities, including their closest neighbors, the
French, Belgians and Dutch. It is claimed that living on an island
separated from the rest of Europe has much to do with it. Whatever the reasons,
it may be fairly stated that the Englishman has developed many attitudes and
habits which distinguish him from other nationalities. Broadly
speaking, the Englishman is a quiet, shy, reserved person who is fully relaxed
only among people he knows well. In the presence of strangers or foreigners she
often seems inhibited, even embarrassed. You have only to witness a city train
any morning or evening to see the truth of this. Serious-looking businessmen and
women sit reading their newspapers or having a light sleep in a corner; no one
speaks. In fact, to do so would seem most unusual. An Englishman, pretending to
be giving advice to overseas visitors, once suggested, "On entering a railway
carriage shake hands with all the passengers." Needless to say, he was not being
serious. There is an unwritten but clearly understood code of behavior which, if
broken, makes the person immediately suspect. In many parts of
the world it is quite normal to show openly extremes of enthusiasm, emotion,
excitement, etc, often accompanied by appropriate gestures. The Englishman is
somewhat different. Of course, an Englishman feels no less deeply than any other
nationality, but he tends to display his feelings far less. This is reflected in
his use of language. Imagine a man commenting on the great beauty of a young
girl. Whereas a more emotional man might describe her as "an excellent
jewel", "extremely beautiful", "precious", the Englishman will flatly state
"Urn, she's all right". An Englishman who has seen a highly successful and
enjoyable film recommends it to a friend by commenting, "It's not bad,
you know," or on seeing very unusual scenery he might convey his pleasure by
saying, "Nice, yes, very nice." The overseas visitor must not be
disappointed by this apparent lack of interest and involvement; he must realize
that "all right", "not had", and "nice", very often have the sense of
"first- class", "excellent", "beautiful". This special use of language,
particularly common in England, is known as restrained
statement.

单选题{{B}}Passage 5{{/B}}
Investment in the public sector, such
as electricity, irrigation, quarrying, public services and transport (excluding
vehicles, ships and planes) increased by about 10%, although the emphasis moved
to transport and away from the other sectors mentioned. Trade and services
recorded a 16 % --17% investment growth, including a 30% increase in investment
in business premises. Industrial investment is estimated to have risen by 8%.
Although the share of agriculture in total gross investment in the economy
continued to decline, investment grew by 9% in absolute terms, largely spurred
on by a 23% expansion of investment in agricultural equipment. Housing
construction had 12% more invested in it in 1964, not so much owing to increased
demand, as to fears of impending new taxes and limitation of building.
Total consumption in real terms rose by close on 11% during 1964, and per
capita personal consumption by under 7%, as in 1963. The undesirable trend
towards a rapid rise in consumption, evident in previous years, remained
unaltered. Since at current prices consumption rose by 16% and disposable
income by 13%, there was evidently a fall in the rate of saving in the private
sector of the economy. Once again consumption patterns indicated a swift advance
in the standard of living. Expenditure on food, especially bread and staple
items, declined in significance, although consumption of fruit increased. Outlay
on furniture and household equipment, health, eduction and recreation continued
to increase. The greatest proof of altered living standards was the rapid
expansion of expenditure on transport (including private cars) and personal
services of all kinds, which occurred during 1964. The progressive affluence of
large sectors of the public was demonstrated by the changing composition of
durable goods purchased. Saturation point was rapidly being approached for items
such as the first household radio, gas cookers, and electric refrigerators,
whereas increasing purchases of automobiles and television sets were
registered.
