Like many other well-known organizations, we face cyber attacks of varying degrees on a regular basis. In mid-December, we detected a highly sophisticated and targeted attack on our corporate infrastructure originating from China that resulted in the theft of intellectual property from Google. However, it soon became clear that what at first appeared to be solely a security incident—albeit a significant one—was something quite different.First, this attack was not just on Google. As part of our investigation we have discovered that at least twenty other large companies from a wide range of businesses—including the Internet, finance, technology, media and chemical sectors—have been similarly targeted. We are currently in the process of notifying those companies, and we are also working with the relevant U. S. authorities.Second, we have evidence to suggest that a primary goal of the attackers was accessing the Gmail accounts of social activists. Based on our investigation to date we believe their attack did not achieve that objective. Only two Gmail accounts appear to have been accessed, and that activity was limited to account information(such as the date the account was created)and subject line, rather than the content of emails themselves.Third, as part of this investigation but independent of the attack on Google, we have discovered that the accounts of dozens of U. S. and Europe-based Gmail users who are advocates of human rights appear to have been routinely accessed by third parties. These accounts have not been accessed through any security breach at Google, but most likely via phishing scams or malware placed on the users computers.

Convenience, policy, friendship, position, influence, money—all these are given as motives for matrimony. Typically treating such matters as property settlements, maintenance payments and child support, the prenuptial contracts function both as cultural manifestos and as alternative settlements to courtrooms. On the one hand, New York matrimonial lawyer Doris Joana Freed says, the documents encode the recognition of many couples that "maybe it's better to settle things now than in the heat and bitterness of an ugly divorce proceeding." On the other hand, the new compacts also stand as artifacts reflecting a loaded complex of cultural ideas, advancing agendas, new visions of what might be. "What's good is a contract in marriage contributes to honesty; what's unfortunate is the idea that any contract can govern your emotions," observers MIT philosopher Irving Singer, author of the trilogy, The Nature of Love.

It is simple enough to say that since books have classes—fiction, biography, poetry—we should separate them and take from each what it is right that each should give us. Yet few people ask from books what books can give us. Most commonly we come to books with blurred and divided minds, asking of fiction that it shall be true, of poetry that it shall be false, of biography that it shall be flattering, of history that it shall enforce our own prejudices. If we could banish all such preconceptions when we read, that would be an admirable beginning. Do not dictate to your author; try to become him. Being his fellow-worker and accomplice. If you hang back, and reserve and criticize at first, you are preventing yourself from getting the fullest possible value from what you read. But if you open your mind as widely as possible, then signs and hints of almost imperceptible fineness, from the twist and turn of the first sentences, will bring you into the presence of a human being unlike any other. Steep yourself in this, acquaint yourself with this, and soon you will find that your author is giving you, or attempting to give you, something far more definite. (Excerpt from How Should One Read a Book by Virginia Woolf)
