Confirming Your Acceptance
If possible, you are advised to view the accommodation before deciding
whether to accept it or not and you can arrange a visit by contacting the
telephone number given in your offer pack to make the arrangements. When you are
offered a place in hall, you will be asked to return a form confirming that you
want to take up the place along with two passport-size photographs and a deposit
of £ 200 to secure the room. You will be given a deadline date
by which you should reply. If you do not reply by this date, the Accommodation
Service will assume that you do not wish to take up the room and it will be
offered to someone else. If you are unable to return all the items which are
expected by the deadline date given, you should telephone the Accommodation
Service Centre for the accommodation you have been offered to discuss the
matter. Telephone numbers for the Accommodation Service Centres are listed at
the back of the Accommodation section of this booklet.
Deposits If you wish to take up
residence in hall or in university managed accommodation, you must pay a deposit
of £ 200 in advance. Rooms cannot be reserved and students cannot take up
residence unless this deposit has been paid. The deposit is
held on your behalf throughout the period of your residence and will be returned
at the end of the occupancy subject to any claims made upon it.
Claims The deposit can be used to pay
towards the cost of any loss or damage during the period of residence that can
be attributed to individual students. It can also be used to pay towards
communal damages that can only be attributed to a group of students or those who
live in a particular hall or building. In addition it can be used at the end of
the contract period to pay towards any university fees that may be outstanding.
Forfeit If you reserve
university accommodation but do not wish to take up residence, provided the
Accommodation Service Centre is notified at least seven clays before you are due
to arrive, your deposit will be returned in full. If the
Accommodation Service Centre is notified that you will not be taking up
residence less than seven days before you are due to arrive, your deposit will
be returned less £ 20 for an administration charge. If you fail
to notify the Accommodation Service Centre that you will not be taking up
residence or provide notification only after the scheduled arrival date, you
will be liable for the full occupation charge until a replacement occupant is
found for the room. Your deposit may be utilised towards meeting this cost.
The Contract All students who
live in university managed accommodation sign a legally binding document which
commits them to reside in and pay for accommodation for the entire academic
session (the actual dates will be listed on the contract). Before making any
decision or accepting the accommodation offered, you should read the sample
contract in the Regulations and Information Booklet that you will receive with
the offer and make sure that you understand what you will be signing and
committing yourself to. Students can be permitted to terminate
their residential agreements only under certain circumstances and, in most
cases, this will be restricted to those who: a) introduce a new
resident, satisfactory to Accommodation Services, who will take over the vacant
room; or b) are advised by Accommodation Services that a
student has approached the Service directly who would like to take over the
vacant room; or c) are subject to a change in status and are no
longer enrolled on a programme or study (written confirmation if required).
