问答题Think of lavender today and up come images of old-world cottage
gardens thick with nodding hollyhocks and pink roses round the door. It's a
prime player in lots of potpourri concoctions for that reason. But recently it's
been seen as more than just a pretty scent. In the last few
years, clinical trials have been conducted on essential oil of lavender.
Scientists have been studying its potential in the treatment of various health
problems. In the days of folk medicine lavender oil was
considered to be one of the most useful all-round remedies, particularly for its
soothing and antiseptic qualities. It was used for a wide range of treatments: a
drop on a restless child's pillow for a good night's sleep or a little massaged
into the temples to relieve a headache or mild depression. It was even used as a
rough-and-ready antiseptic by soldiers in the First World War. And it goes back
much further than that: the Romans used the oil so widely to perfume their baths
that its Latin name Lavandula, derives from their verb to bathe.
Lavender's healing properties were first discovered by accident. In 1910
a French chemist and perfumer burnt himself in a laboratory explosion. He
plunged his singed hand into the nearest liquid which happened to be lavender
essence and was so impressed with the results that he devoted 50 years to
studying the properties of essential oils. Pharmaceutical
companies-influenced by growing ecological concerns as the rest of us-have begun
to reappraise many traditional treatments. Some of the most effective drugs we
use in modern medicine derive from 'natural remedies.

问答题Much of the discussion of environmental problems in the popular press leaves the reader with the impression that matters have been growing steadily worse, and that pollution is largely a product of the profit system and modern industrialization. There are environmental problems today that are both enormous and pressing, but in fact pollution is nothing new. Medieval cities were pestholes—the streets and rivers were littered with garbage and the air stank of rotting wastes. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, a German traveler reported that to get a view of London from the tower of St. Paul"s, one had to get there very early in the morning "before the air was full of coal smoke".

问答题 (1) In the last few years the conventional wisdom has been that the advent of the new media will hasten the demise of print, and that the culture of print will soon be a thing of the past. But I wonder whether this confuses the content with the attachment we have to a particular kind of container. In fact, (2) a. number of recent developments suggest that new media may actually be the salvation of old media, and could preserve and extend the best aspects of the print culture, while augmenting it with their various technological advantages. If this is true, then the future of old media is in embracing the new—a development we see most clearly with newspapers. Newspapers have been spurred by a simple economic fact: (3) more than a third of their revenue comes from classified advertising, which readily lends itself to searchable Web sites In a defensive move, newspapers quickly and heavily invested in such online sites as CareerPath. corn, PowerAdz, tom, AdOne and Classified Ventures, and also use those companies for added exposure for national ads. Most have also put their own local classifieds online. (4) The Web sites, meanwhile, have become a way to broaden and deepen Newspapers' content as a potential source of revenue, as home pages attract new advertisers and subscribers. Knight Ridder's RealCities network, (RealCities. com) is a good example. The portal site gets news from the chain's thirty-one dailies, as well as from Belo and Central newspapers, who are partners in the operation. And it features directories of community resources and business, classifieds, entertainment, shopping, free e-mail, community publishing, and search capability. RealCities brought Knight Ridder $31.4 million in revenue in 1999. The New York Times is another. The paper's robust Web site has attracted 11.4 million registered non-paying readers (as of April, up 61.9 percent from a year earlier). In order to get access to the site, readers must offer some basic personal data, which will eventually be used for direct marketing. (5) By 1999 nearly half of those registered readers reported that they had never purchased a paper copy of the Times, which means that the online version was introducing the brand to an entirely new group. The Web presence also helps the Times's print circulation; the paper gained some 12,000 new subscribers via the site in the first half of 1999.

问答题LUCY'S ANSWER Yes, it's a terrible investment : if you get out your calculator and run one of those discounted cash flow calculations that MBAs favor, you'll find it hard to come up with a positive number. (77) Many people leaving business school now are not only failing to change their careers, they are crawling back to their old jobs with their old employers. The odd thing all is that all MBAs still claim the experience was worth it. If you read related blogs you will see every single MBA is breathless with admiration for MBA courses.
问答题What is friendship or how should we define it? It is a simple but difficult question. People have different opinions concerning friendship. In Western countries, some people regard friendship as a gift from God to us human beings. (91)
Some of us might say that friendship is trust and loyalty; and others might say that friendship is a process of sharing, earing, and communicating.
You know, in the eye of some men of letters, friendship is an interpersonal relationship combining together trust, support, communication, loyalty, and understanding. We can also find similar definitions in some dictionaries. (92)
But in our daily life, a written description does not seem to be necessary
. The reason why we choose some people to make friends with may be quite simple. Perhaps we share common interests, support and love each other. Or perhaps there is no reason at all. We just have fun together. Do you remember your childhood? We did not know the exact meaning of friendship, but we made lots of friends.
Making friends is something that we will do all our lives. To many people, friendship comes naturally and easily wherever they go, but some people go through life with only a few friends. To many students, school is an excellent place to make friends, because students spend most of their time in class or participating in various community activities (like different clubs), and extracurricular activities (like sports). These are good places to meet people and to make friends. Nowadays, some people are making friends through the Internet. While this can be an easy place to chat with people, it is not always a safe place to meet people for friendship, as there is probably no way of knowing whom you are chatting with when you are online. (93)
Therefore, you are not to give out your personal information, such as your address, your phone number, or the name of your school.
Besides, we should keep it in mind that friendship does not always come overnight. It may take time.
Once a friendship is established, we should cherish it. We need to think about how to keep it and how to strengthen it. (94)
Even if a friendship is strong, it is still important to work on it once in a while.
In order to keep friendship, we should keep in touch with each other. We should give our friends honest and sincere appreciation from time to time and we should respect their space. We should learn to accept differences, learn how to avoid conflict and when a conflict emerges, we should find a resolution instead of criticizing, condemning or complaining. (95)
And to win friends we should be thoughtful, that is, always try to put ourselves in another person"s shoes.
Try not to hurt anybody. When we do not have anything nice to say, do not say anything at all. Likewise, if we think what we do will hurt somebody, do not do it. In this way, we can avoid hurting others"feelings and we can avoid ruining a good relationship.
