填空题 Passage Two Questions 66- 70 are based on the following passage. There are cockroaches (蟑螂) everywhere on Earth except the places that are covered with ice. Scientists have discovered about 3,500 different species of cockroach. There is just one human species! Cockroaches can be anything in size from about five mm to nine cm. Although five mm is very small, nine cm is as long as a large rat. It is very difficult to catch most cockroaches. They "see" with the hairs on their bodies. These hairs can feel the smallest movement in the air, so the cockroaches know immediately something moves, and run to safety. Of all the species of cockroach, fortunately only three live among humans and are a serious problem. They are the German, the Oriental, and the American. One egg case of the German cockroach can produce as many as seven million cockroaches in 12 months! Our main problem with cockroaches is that not only do they look ugly to us, but they also carry diseases. They are particularly dangerous in hospitals as they eat all kinds of hospital waste or get it on their bodies. They can then carry this waste, which may contain dangerous bacteria, on to food which is then eaten by people in the hospital. Most of the bacteria that cause food poisoning have been found in the stomachs of cockroaches, so it is important that cockroaches should be kept out of restaurants and other places where food is prepared. Many people work and try to destroy cockroaches, but as soon as they find one way of doing it, the cockroaches "learn" how to deal with it. Electricity does not always kill them and they can avoid most poisons or "learn" how to deal with others. At one time, scientists thought that radiation would kill them, but they have been on Earth for about 300 million years, and it does not harm them as much as it does us. It seems probable that when there are no longer human beings living on the Earth, cockroaches will still be here. Questions:

填空题"My advisor wants me to call him by his first name," many foreign graduate students in the U.S. have said, "But I just can't do it. It doesn't seem right. I have to show my respect. " On the other hand, professors have said of foreign students, "They keep bowing and saying 'Yes, sir, yes, sir.' I can hardly stand it. I wish they'd stop being so polite and just say what they have on their minds. " Differing ideas about formality and respect frequently complicate relationships between American professors and students from abroad, especially Asian students (especially female Asian students). The professors generally prefer informal relationships (sometimes, but not always, including the use of first names rather than titles and family names) and little acknowledgment of status differences. Many foreign students are used to more formal relationships and sometimes have difficulty bringing themselves to speak to their teachers at all, let alone addressing them by their given names. The characteristics of student-teacher relationships on American campuses vary somewhat, depending on whether the students involved are undergraduate or graduate students, and depending on the size and nature of the college. Graduate students typically have more intense relationships with their professors than undergraduates do; at smaller colleges student-teacher relationships are typically even less formal than they are at larger institutions. To say that student-teacher relationships are informal is not to say that there are no recognized status differences between the two groups. There are. But native American students may show their respect mainly in the vocabulary and tone of voice they use when speaking to teachers. Much of their behavior around teachers may seem to foreign students to be disrespectful. For example, American students will eat in class, read newspapers, and assume quite informal postures. Disapprove of such behavior, but they tolerate it. Students, after all, are individuals who have the right to decide for themselves how they are going to behave.

填空题Stereotypes are troublesome because they are often indiscriminate, exhibit an allness orientation, and can produce frozen evaluations. Considering the pervasiveness of stereotyping in our society, one should not take it lightly. When we stereotype we define a person and this definition, superficial at best, can be quite powerful. To stereotype is to define and to define is to control, especially if the definition is widely accepted regardless of its accuracy. In a male dominated society women may be stereotyped as empty-headed and illogical. The fact that the stereotype has persisted for years manifests the control men have over women, control that excludes women from executive positions and relegates them to mindless housekeeping duties. Women"s liberation is fundamentally the struggle to define, to reject male stereotypes of females. Stereotypes are sometimes seductive, however. When women are told repeatedly that they are stupid, they may begin believing it. A self-fulfilling prophecy may develop. Low self-esteem produced from male definitions of women as unintelligent can lead to poor performance and the consequent belief that the stereotype has merit. The stereotype is thus nurtured and perpetuated. Stereotyping can thus control, insidiously imprisoning its victims in constraining roles. So whole stereotyping isn"t intrinsically evil. Most stereotypes lack empirical foundations and are assertions of power and dominance over less powerful groups. Reduced to an abstraction, victims of stereotyping must struggle to define themselves or be content to accept roles others have carved out for them. It is little wonder our society has been experiencing turmoil. Complete the summary with a maximum of two words from the passage, changing the form where necessary. We can see that stereotypes are dangerous because they are indiscriminate, are inclined toward 1 , and give a frozen evaluation. They also define and 2 people if the stereotypes are widely accepted. Women, for example, have to 3 to reject men"s stereotypes of females. Sometimes stereotypes are seductive. People believe these images, so they become 4 . An image can control its victims, imprisoning them in roles. Even most stereotypes aren"t true, victims of stereotyping must struggle to 5 or accept the bad image others have made up.

填空题China will speed up legislation covering activities in space to make better use of the nation"s assets and boost space-related industries, according to senior officials. "As China puts more and more assets into space, conflicts involving our increasing number of activities, limited resources and space debris have become noticeable," Tian Yulong, secretary-general of the China National Space Administration, told reporters on the sidelines of an international workshop on space law that opened in Beijing on Monday. Officials and experts from more than 30 nations and international organizations are taking part in the four-day event, which was hosted by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization and the administration. "The safety of our assets in space depends largely on the enforcement of international space law and our domestic law that governs space activities," Tian said, adding that the laws also play an important role in managing and fostering space-related industries, which have been enjoying rapid growth in China. "The market for space-related technologies, data and intellectual property is expanding very fast and has a promising future, so now is the right time for us to make and implement a space law to regulate the market," Tian said. Currently, China is the only space power in the world with no space law. By contrast, more than 30 countries, including the United States, Russia and France, have long had a comprehensive legal framework to guide space exploration. Those countries" space-related industries have benefited greatly from the enforcement of their respective space laws, experts say. China has established a set of regulations to govern its space activities, ranging from the launching of spacecraft and registration of space objects to measures to mitigate and reduce space debris, said Xu Dazhe, director of the Chinese administration. He pledged to cooperate closely with lawmakers to accelerate the introduction of a comprehensive space law, which has been included in the national legislative agenda. The proposed space law is set to regulate the planning of space activities, to control the use of resources and technology transfers, to guarantee the sustainable development of China"s space exploration and to promote international cooperation in space-related fields, Tian said. Hu Hao, a senior expert with China"s lunar exploration program, said that space law is one of the pillars of the country"s "soft power", and the government should draw up and publish the law as soon as possible. "Furthermore, compared with the past—where space activities only involved government departments-an increasing number of institutes and business entities have now been active in the field, with the rapid expansion of a space-related market that requires a foundation of law on which to restructure the current management system," he said. Bao Weimin, a space technology researcher and political adviser to the government, said China"s space activities are administered by a number of government bodies and industry organizations, and a body of law should establish an integrated management mechanism and make their responsibilities clear. Complete the summary below with information from the passage, using no more than three words for each blank. Senior officials announced that China will promote 1 in space to exploit the nation"s assets and escalate space-related industries. Officials and experts from more than 30 nations and international organizations are taking part in the four-day event, which was hosted by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization and the administration. They agree that the 2 of international space law in space will strengthen space assets safety and have positive effect on managing and fostering space-related industries which are growing fast in China. Currently, more than 30 countries, including the United States, Russia and France, except China, have built a 3 to guide space exploration. China has established a set of regulations to govern its space activities, including the launching of spacecraft and registration of space objects; and measures to 4 space debries. The proposed space law is set to regulate the planning of space activities, to control the use of resources and technology transfers, to 5 China"s space exploration and to promote international cooperation in space-related fields.
