填空题Until the very latest moment of his existence, man has been bound to the planet on which he originated and developed. Now he has the capability to 1 leave that planet and move out into the universe to those worlds which he has known previously: only directly. Men have explored parts of the moon, put space- 2 ships in orbit around another planet and possibly within the decade will land into 3 another planet and explore it. Can we be too bold as to suggest that we may be able to colonize other 4 planet within the not-too-distant future? Some have advocated such a procedure as 5 a solution to the population problem: ship the excess people off to the moon. But we must keep in head the billions of dollars we might spend in carrying out the 6 project. To maintain the earth"s population at its present level, we would have to blast off into space 7500 people every hour of every day of the year. Why are we spending so little money on space exploration? 7 Consider the great need for improving many aspects of the global environment, one 8 is surely justified in his concern for the money and resources that they are poured 9 into the space exploration efforts. But perhaps we should look at both sides of the coin before arriving hasty conclusions. 10

填空题Education Issues Sara I'm a teacher of French and Spanish, and I think foreign languages are one of the areas where it's good to be creative. Young people need to learn foreign languages by sp (66) them and doing fun activities like role-plays instead of just doing written exercises. Of course there is some hard work in learning a language, like trying to remember all those tenses of v (67) , but I think it's a good idea to try to make classroom activities as enj (68) as possible. Nick I left school four years ago, and looking back, one thing I'd say about the education system is that there are too many ex (69) . Instead of being able to enjoy learning about something, you're always wo (70) about when the next test is, what questions are going to be on it, and whether or not you're going to p (71) . I also think there should be fewer compulsory sub (72) . I had to study physics until I was 16 but I never had any interest in it, and I've now forgotten everything I learned. It seems like a w (73) of time. Robert As a teacher for more than thirty years, I think these days there's too much emphasis on letting young people "express themselves" in the cl (74) , and not enough emphasis on discipline. Most of my col (75) have problems with pupils who are always (76) (mess) around in lessons. These kids don't res (77) the teachers or the other pupils, and we shouldn't have to put up with them-it should be easier to suspend or expel them if they don' t behave. Diane These days you see so many young people who can't seem to write anything, not even a short email, without lots of spelling and (78) (punctuate) mistakes. When I was at school the education system used to con (79) on reading, writing and maths-and sometimes, as a pa (80) of young children myself, I worry that we've now moved too far away from that.

Tea remained scarce and very expensive in England until the ships of the East India Company began to bring it direct from China early in the 17th century. 填空题There are cockroaches (蟑螂) everywhere on Earth except the places that are covered with ice. Scientists have discovered about 3,500 different species of cockroaches. There is just one human species! Cockroaches can be anything in size from about five mm to nine cm. Although five mm is very small, nine cm is as long as a large rat. It is very difficult to catch most cockroaches. They"see" with the hairs on their bodies. These hairs can feel the smallest movement in the air, so the cockroaches know immediately something moves, and run to safety. Of all the species of cockroach, fortunately only three live among humans and are a serious problem. They are the German, the Oriental, and the American. One egg case of the German cockroach can produce as many as seven million cockroaches in 12 months! Our main problem with cockroaches is that not only do they look ugly to us, but they also carry diseases. They are particularly dangerous in hospitals as they eat all kinds of hospital waste or get it on their bodies. They can then carry this waste, which may contain dangerous bacteria, on to food which is then eaten by people in the hospital. Most of the bacteria that cause food poisoning have been found in the stomachs of cockroaches, so it is important that cockroaches should be kept out of restaurants and other places where food is prepared. Many people work and try to destroy cockroaches, but as soon as they find one way of doing it, the cockroaches "learn" how to deal with it. Electricity does not always kill them and they can avoid most poisons or"learn"how to deal with others. At one time, scientists thought that radiation would kill them. but they have been on Earth for about 300 million years, and it does not harm them as much as it does us. It seems probable that when there are no longer human beings living on the Earth, cockroaches will still be here.

填空题Paper is different from other waste produce because it comes from a sustainable resource: trees. Unlike the minerals and oil used to make plastics and metals, trees are replaceable. Paper is also biodegradable, so it does not pose as much threat to the environment when it is discarded. While 45 out of every 100 tonnes of wood fibre used to make paper in Australia comes from waste paper, the rest comes directly from virgin fibre from forests and plantations. By world standards this is a good performance since the worldwide average is 33 per cent waste paper. Governments have encouraged waste paper collection and sorting schemes and, at the same time, the paper industry has responded by developing new recycling technologies that have paved the way for even greater utilization of used fibre. As a result, industry's use of recycled fibres is expected to increase at twice the rate of virgin fibre over the coming years. Already, waste paper constitutes 70% of paper used for packaging, and advances in the technology required to remove ink from the paper have allowed a higher recycled content in newsprint and writing paper. To achieve the benefits of recycling, the community must also contribute. We need to accept a change in the quality of paper products; for example stationery may be less white and of a rougher texture. There also needs to be support from the community for waste paper collection programs. Not only do we need to make the paper available to collectors but it also needs to be separated into different types and sorted from contaminants such as staples, paperclips, string and other miscellaneous items. There are technical limitations to the amount of paper which can be recycled and some paper products cannot be collected for re-use. These include paper in the form of books and permanent records, photographic paper and paper which is badly contaminated. The four most common sources of paper for recycling are factories and retail stores which gather large amounts of packaging material in which goods are delivered, also offices which have unwanted business documents and computer output, paper converters and printers and lastly households which discard newspapers and packaging material. The paper manufacturer pays a price for the paper and may also incur the collection cost. Once collected, the paper has to be sorted by hand by people trained to recognize various types of paper. This is necessary because some types of paper can only be made from particular kinds of recycled fibre. The sorted paper then has to be repulped or mixed with water and broken down into its individual fibres. This mixture is called stock and may contain a wide variety of contaminating materials, particularly if it is made from mixed waste paper which has had little sorting. Various machinery is used to remove other materials from the stock. After passing through the repulping process, the fibres from printed waste paper are grey in colour because the printing ink has soaked into the individual fibres. This recycled material can only be used in products where the grey colour does not matter, such as cardboard boxes but if the grey colour is not acceptable, the fibres must be de-inked. This involves adding chemicals such as caustic soda or other alkalis, soaps and detergents, water-hardening agents such as calcium chloride, frothing agents and bleaching agents. Before the recycled fibres can be made into paper they must be refined or treated in such a way that they bond together. Most paper products must contain some virgin fibre as well as recycled fibres and unlike glass, paper cannot be recycled indefinitely. Most paper is down-cycled which means that a product made from recycled paper is of an inferior quality to the original paper. Recycling paper is beneficial in that it saves some of the energy, labour and capital that goes into producing virgin pulp. However, recycling requires the use of fossil fuel, a nonrenewable energy source, to collect the waste paper from the community and to process it to produce new paper. And the recycling process still creates emissions which require treatment before they can be disposed of safely. Nevertheless, paper recycling is an important economical and environmental practice but one which must be carried out in a rational and viable manner for it to be useful to both industry and the community. From the point of view of recycling, paper has two advantages over minerals and oil in that firstly it comes from a resource which is (76) and secondly it is less threatening to our environment when we throw it away because it is (77) . Although Australia's record in the re-use of waste paper is good, it is still necessary to use a combination of recycled fibre and (78) to make new paper. The paper industry has contributed positively and people have also been encouraged by the government to collect their waste on a regular basis. One major difficulty is the removal of (79) from used paper but advances are being made in this area. However, we need to learn to accept paper which is generally of a lower quality than before and to sort our waste paper by removing (80) before discarding it for collection.
