填空题When Christopher Columbus landed in the New World,
the North American continent was area of astonishing ethnic
11
and cultural diversity. North of the Rio Grande, which now
marks the border among the United States and Mexico, was a
12
population of over 12 million people representing approximately
400 distinct cultures, 500 languages, and a remarkable
variety of political and religious institutions and physical and
ethic types. Compared to the Europeans, the Indian peoples
13
were extraordinary heterogeneous, and they often viewed
the Europe as just another tribe.
14
These varied tribal cultures were as diversified as the
Land the Indians lived. In the high plains of the
15
Dakotas, the Mandan developed a peaceful communal
Society centered around agriculture. Only a few hundred miles
off, however, in the northwestern Montana, the Black feet
16
turned from agriculture and began to use horse, which had been
introduced by the Spaniards. As skilled riders they became
17
hunters and fighters and developed a fierce and aggressive
culture centered around the buffalo. In the eastern woodlands
surrounding the Great Lakes, the Potawatomis were expert
fisherman, canoe builders, and hunters. In the Northeast the
six Iroquois nations were among the most political
18
sophisticated people in the world, formed the famed Iroquois
19
confederation, that included the Senecas and the Mohawks.
20
This confederation, with its systems of checks and balances,
provided a model for the United States constitutions.

填空题Going to the beach is many Americans'favorite activity. In the area near New York City, nine million people used to go to the beach every summer. They went swimming in the ocean without giving a thought to what was underwater. But those days are long gone. In the summer of 1988. the government was forced to shut down beaches all over America. Many of the beaches had to be closed because garbage from hospitals was found in the water. The garbage included glass bottles with samples of blood, and people were afraid they might get AIDS from the blood. Where the medical garbage came from is anybody's guess. At some beaches, sewage (生活污水) was found in the water. Americans were shocked by this state of affairs. They had long taken for granted that oceans were big enough to stay clean, even if garbage and sewage were dumped into them. People didn't think of the underwater garbage because it was out of sight. Some of the most polluted waters still look beautiful at first glance. San Francisco Bay is a good example of a beautiful bay that's full of chemicals. Scientists discovered pollution in some lakes and rivers when they found fish with rotting skin. In many parts of America, people are told not to eat too much fish because of pollution. Most American cities put their garbage in the ground. But New York and a few other cities put their garbage in the ocean. Boston Harbor is so polluted that scientists say it won't recover until the next century at best. The city of Boston puts its sewage in the water. The government has ordered the city to build a sewage treatment plant. Cleaning up oceans won't be easy, but people can no longer ignore this challenge.

填空题Of all figures from America's past, Abraham Lincoln is dearest to
the hearts of the American people. In fact, the admiration they have for him
borders on worship. Writers note that the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. DC is
not unlike the temples that ancient Greeks built in honor of their gods, and
that annual ceremonies of celebrating Lincoln's birthday in schools and public
places have sometimes had characteristics of religious services. Certainly
Lincoln is America's ideal of a great leader. He had many of the qualities of
leadership that Americans admire. First of all, Lincoln's
career fits popular American belief that every child can dream of he-coming
president. Americans admire the person—the one who, with neither money nor
family influence, fights his or her way to the top. Lincoln was born of poor
parents. His mother died when he was young. He had little opportunity for
schooling. His early study was done alone at night by the light of a fireplace.
He did hard manual labor through the day-splitting rails for fences, taking care
of livestock, working on riverboat or in store. But as he grew older he studied
law in his spare time and become a lawyer. He was a good speaker and student of
political philosophy. His ability finally made a name for him and eventually, he
became president of the United States. Lincoln is also admired
because of his leadership during the difficult period of the Civil War. He dared
to do what he thought was right at a time when his beliefs were unpopular with
many people. He, in a sense, represents the spirit of union among the states.
Before the Civil War, the economy of the South depended on an agricultural
system, which made use of slave labor. When re, formers in the northern states
put pressure on Congress not to permit to secede or withdraw from the United
States, they argued that the question of slavery was a matter for the individual
states to decide rather than the federal government, and they did not want to
accept its decision. The national government said that no state had the right to
secede, and the Civil War was the result. If the south had won the war, the
Unites States might well have been divided into several countries. Lincoln
worked hard to preserve the union, and the northern states were
victorious. Furthermore, Lincoln had many personal qualities
that made him dear to the hearts of his countrymen. He had infinite patience and
tolerance for those who disagreed with him. As president, he appointed men to
high government positions whom he considered most capable, even though some of
them openly scorned him. He was generous to his opponents. There are many
stories about his thoughtful treatment of southern leaders. When the war was
over, he showed the South no hatred. Since generosity toward a defeated opponent
is admired by Americans, Lincoln fitted the national ideal of what is
right. Shortly after the Civil War ended, Lincoln was shot
while attending a play in Washington Theater. He died within a few hours. The
uncontrolled emotional reaction of the nation to his death was almost
unbelievable and demonstrated the deep esteem in which he was held. Newspapers
were edged with black ; religious leaders gave praise of Lincoln instead of
their prepared sermons. His funeral procession in Washington was miles long.
Lincoln's body was taken by train back to his former home in Springfield,
Illinois, but in all the major cities through which the train passed, the coffin
was paraded through streets lined with sorrowful thousands. In the small towns
through which the train passed bells rang in honor of the dead president.
Citizens lit torches along the railroad track to show their last
respect. The circumstances of his death set Lincoln apart from
other American leaders. Had Lincoln lived, it might well be that his postwar
policies would have brought criticisms upon him that would have tarnished his
popularity. Instead, an assassin's bullet erased in the minds of Americans any
faults he had and emphasized his virtues. Complete the following
sentences with information given in the passage, using a maximum of 4 words for
each sentence.

I was hoping to be able to arrange a visit sometime next week. Monday would be the best day for us, but we can be flexible. In the advertisement, you mention that the place could be partly furnished. We have a little furniture ourselves, but probably not enough for a two-bedroom place. Could you possibly tell us what inventory is likely to be included with the apartment? I would also really appreciate it if you could send us a couple of pictures of the bedroom and living/dining room, as well as some directions as to how to get there. Thank you very much in advance. 填空题If art seeks to divorce itself from meaningful and associative images, if it holds material alone as its objective, then I think that the material itself ought to have the greatest possible plasticity, the greatest potentialities for the development of shapes and the creating of relationships. For that reason I think that the sculpture which has been created with a view to being form alone has been a great deal more successful and interesting than has been the painting in that vein. The sculptor sets out with two pre-existing advantages: one, that he must have craftsmanship, and the other, that he works in the round. He does not have to stimulate depth nor create illusions of depth because he works in volume—in three-dimensional form.
Thus Noguchi, working in marble, is able to develop relationships in three-dimensions rather than two and yet retain both simplicity and unity. He has at his disposal the advantages of light and space, and the natural translucence and glow of marble, all of which he exploits and reveals with great elegance.
Henry Moore is one of the great contemporary imaginers who has brought new materials and new concepts into sculptural form. He discovers the naturally heroic character of bronze and exploits feelingly the graining and fine surfaces of wood. Undoubtedly his most remarkable feat has been the surrounding of open space and his use of such space as a sculptural material. But beauty and craft and idea are still paramount with Moore and he never obliterates these qualities in the shock of the new.
