单选题 Rising China The China boom is by now a well-documented phenomenon. Who hasn't heard of the Middle Kingdom's astounding economic growth (8 percent annually), its mesmerizing(令人目瞪口呆的) (51) market (1.2 billion people), the investment ardor of foreign suitors( $ 40 billion in foreign direct investment last year (52) )? China is an economic juggernaut(主宰). (53) Nicholas Lardy of the Brookings Institution, a Washington D. C.-based think tank, "No country has expanded its foreign trade as fast as China over the last 20 years. Japan doubled its foreign trade over (54) ; (55) foreign trade as quintupled. They're become the preeminent producer of labor-intensive manufacturing goods in the world". But there's been (56) from the dazzling China growth story—namely, the Chinese multinational. No major Chinese companies have (57) established themselves, or their brands, on the global stage. But as Haler shows, that is starting to change. (58) 100 years of poverty and chaos, of being overshadowed by foreign countries and multinationals, Chinese industrial companies are starting to (59) on the world. A new generation of large and credible firms (60) in China in the electronics, appliance and even high-tech sectors. Some have reached critical mass on the main land and (61) new outlets for their production—through exports and by building Chinese factories abroad, chiefly in Southeast Asia. One example: China's investment in Malaysia soared from $ 8 million in 2000 to $ 766 million in the first half of this year. (62) China's export prowess(杰出的才能 ), it will be years (63) Chinese firms achieve the managerial and operational expertise of Western and Japanese multinationals. For one thing, many of its best companies are still at least partially state-owned. (64) , China has a shortage of managerial talent and little notion of marketing and brand-building. Its companies are also (65) by the country's tong tradition of central planning, inefficient use of capital and antiquated distribution system, which makes building national companies a challenge.

Play{{/B}} Play is the principal business of childhood, and in
recent years research has shown the great importance of play in the development
of a human being. From earliest infancy, every child needs opportunity and the
right materials for play, and the main tools of play are toys. Their main
function is to suggest, encourage and assist play. To succeed in this they must
be good toys, which children will play with often, and will come back to again
and again. Therefore it is important to choose suitable toys for different
stages of a child's development. In recent years research on
infant development has shown that the standard a child is likely to reach,
within the range of his inherited abilities, is largely determined in the first
three years of his life. So a baby's ability to profit from the right play
materials should not be underestimated. A baby who is encouraged and stimulated,
talked to and shown things and played with, has the best chance of growing up
successfully. In the next stage, from three to five years old,
curiosity knows no bounds. Every type of suitable toy should be made available
to the child, for trying out, experimenting and learning, for discovering his
own particular ability. Bricks and jigsaws (七巧板) and construction toys;
painting, scribbling (涂鸦) and making things; sand and water play; toys for
imaginative and pretending play; the first social games for learning to play and
get on with others. By the third stage of play development —
from five to seven or eight years — the child is at school. But for a few more
years play is still the best way of learning, at home or at school. It is easier
to see which type of toys the child most enjoys. Until the age of
seven or eight, play and work mean much the same to a child. But once reading
has been mastered, then books and school become the main source of learning.
Toys are still interesting and valuable, they lead on to new hobbies, but their
significance has changed — to a child of nine or ten years, toys and games mean,
as to adults, relaxation and fun.
单选题Three Ways to Become More Creative Most people believe they don't have much imagination. They are wrong. Everyone has imagination, but most of us, once we become adults, forget how to access it. Creativity isn't always connected with great works of art or ideas. People at work and in their free time routinely think of creative ways to solve problems. Maybe you have a goal to achieve, a tricky question to answer or you just want to expand your mind! Here are three techniques to help you. This technique involves taking unrelated ideas and trying to find links between them. First, think about the problem you have to solve or the job you need to do. Then find an image, word, idea or object ,for example, a candle. Write down all the ideas/words associated with candles: light, fire, matches, wax, night, silence, etc. Think of as many as you can. The next stage is to relate the ideas to the job you have to do. So imagine you want to buy a friend an original present; you could buy him tickets to a match or take him out for the night. Imagine that normal limitations don't exist. You have as much time/space/money, etc. as you want. Think about your goal and the new possibilities. If, for example, your goal is to learn to ski(滑 雪),you can now practice skiing every day of your life(because you have the time and the money). Now adapt this to reality. Maybe you can practice skiing every day in December, or every Monday in January. Look at the situation from a different point of view. Good negotiators(谈判者)use this technique in business, and so do writers. Fiction writers often imagine they are the characters in their books. They ask questions: what does this character want? Why can't she get it? What changes must she make to get what she wants? What does she dream about? If your goal involves other people, put yourself "in their shoes". The best fishermen think like fish!

{{B}} Colors
Associated with Feeling and Attitudes{{/B}} We all associate
colors with feeling and attitudes. In politics dark blue often means"
tradition", and red means "social change". But blue can also mean sadness ( I'm
feeling blue ), white is often for purity, although in China white is worn for
funerals, and red is used to express the joy of a wedding, in Western Europe
white is worn at weddings and black for funerals. Advertisers are aware of the
importance of selection colors according to the way people react to them. Soap
powders come in white and light blue packets (clean and cold, like ice );
cereals often come in brown packets ( like wheat fields ), but cosmetics never
come in brown jars ( dirty !). Where do these ideas come from?
Max Luscher from the University of Geneva believes that in the beginning life
was dictated by two factors beyond our control: night and day. Night brought
passivity, and a general slowing down of metabolism (新陈代谢); day brought with it
the possibility of action, and increase in the metabolic rate, thus providing us
with energy and initiative. Dark blue, therefore, is the color of quiet and
passivity, bright yellow the color of hope and activity. In
prehistoric times, activity as a rule took one of two forms: either we were
hunting and attacking, or we were being hunted and defending ourselves against
attack. Attack is universally represented by the color red; self-preservation by
its complement green.

单选题Adaptation of Living Things
Certain animals and plants develop characteristics that help them cope with their environment better than others of their kind. This natural biological process is called adaptation. Among the superior characteristics developed through adaptation are those that may help in getting food or shelter, in providing protection, and in producing and protecting the young. That results in the evolution of more and more organisms that are better fitted to their
environments
.
Each living thing is adapted to its way of life in a general way, but each is adapted especially to its own distinct class. A plant, for example, depends upon its roots to fix itself firmly and to absorb water and inorganic chemicals. It depends upon its green leaves for using the sun"s energy to make food from inorganic chemicals. These are general adaptations, common to most plants. In addition, there are special adaptations that only certain kinds of plants have.
Many animals have adaptations that help them escape from their enemies. Some insects are hidden by their body color or shape, and many look like a leaf or a little branch. The coats of deer are colored to mix with the surroundings. Many animals have the ability to remain completely still when an enemy is near.
Organisms have a great variety of ways of adapting. They may adapt in their structure, function, and genetics; in their development and production of the young; and in other respects. An organism may create its own environment, as do warm-blooded mammals, which have the ability to adjust body heat exactly to maintain their ideal temperature despite changing weather. Usually adaptations are an advantage, but sometimes an organism is so well adapted to a particular environment that, if conditions change, it finds it difficult or impossible to readapt to the new conditions.
