单选题Flying the Hypert Skies A little airplane has given new meaning to the term "going hyper." The Hyper-X recently broke the record for air-breathing jet planes when it traveled at a hypersonic speed of seven times the speed of sound. That's about 5,000 miles per hour. At this speed, you'd get around the world -- flying along the equator -- in less than 5 hours. The Hyper-X is an unmanned, experimental aircraft just 12 feet long. It achieves hypersonic speed using a special sort of engine known as a scramjet. It may sound like something from a comic book, but engineers have been experimenting with scramjets since the 1960s. For an engine to burn fuel and produce energy, it needs oxygen. A jet engine, like those on passenger airplanes, gets oxygen from the air. A rocket engine typically goes faster but has to carry its own supply of oxygen. A scramjet engine goes as fast as a rocket, but it doesn't have to carry its own oxygen supply. A scramjet's special design allows it to obtain oxygen from the air that flows through the engine. And it does so without letting the fast-moving air put out the combustion flames. However, a scramjet engine works properly only at speeds greater than five times the speed of sound. A booster rocket carried the Hyper-X to an altitude of about 100,000 feet for its test flight. The aircraft's record-beating flight lasted just 11 seconds. Although the little plane's self-powered flight lasted only 11 seconds, that brief journey on March 27 makes a major milestone on the way to a new breed of very fast airplanes, comments Werner J. A. Dahm of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In the future, engineers predict, airplanes equipped with scramjet engines could transport cargo quickly and cheaply to the brink of space. Such hypersonic jets could potentially carry passengers anywhere in the world in just a few hours. Out of the three experimental Hyper-X aircrafts built for NASA, only one is now left. The agency has plans for another 11-second hypersonic flight, this time at 10 times the speed of the sound.

单选题The State of Marriage Today
Is there something seriously wrong with marriage today? During the past 50 years, the rate of divorce in the United States has exploded; almost 50% of marriages end in divorce now, and the evidence suggests it is going to get worse. If this trend continues, it will lead to the breakup of the family, according to a spokesperson for the National Family Association. Some futurists predict that in 100 years, the average American will marry at least four times, and extramarital affairs will be even more common than they are now.
But what are the reasons for this, and is the picture really so gloomy? The answer to the first question is really quite simple: marriage is no longer the necessity it once was. The institution of marriage has been based for years partly on economic need. Women used to be economically dependent on their husbands as they usually didn"t have jobs outside the home. But with the rising number of women in well-paying jobs, this is no longer the case, so they don"t feel that they need to stay in a failing marriage.
In answer to the second question, the outlook may not be as pessimistic as it seems. While the rate of divorce has risen, the rate of couples marrying has never actually fallen very much, so marriage is still quite popular. In addition to this, many couples now cohabit and don"t bother to marry. These couples are effectively married, but they do not appear in either the marriage or divorce statistics. In fact, more than 50% of first marriages survive. The statistics are deceptive because there is a higher number of divorces in second and third marriages than in-first marriages.
So is marriage really an outdated institution? The fact that most people still get married indicates that it isn"t. And it is also true that married couples have a healthier life than single people: they suffer less from stress and its consequences, such as heart problems, and married men generally consider themselves more contented than their single counterparts. Perhaps the key is to find out what makes a successful marriage and apply it to all of our relationships!

Medical Journals
Medical journals are publications that report medical information to
physicians and other health professionals. In the past, these
journals were available only in print. With the development of electronic
publishing, many medical journals now have Web sites on the Internet, and some
journals publish only online. A few medical journals, like the Journal of the
American Medical Association, are considered general medical journals because
they cover many fields of medicine. Most medical journals are specialty journals
that focus on a particular area of medicine. Medical journals
publish many types of articles. Research articles report the results of research
studies on a range of topics varying from the basic mechanisms of diseases to
clinical trials that compare outcomes of different treatments. Review articles
summarize and analyze the information available on a specific topic based on a
careful search of the medical literature. Because the results of
individual research studies can be affected by many factors, combining results
from different studies on the same topic can be helpful in reaching conclusions
about the scientific evidence for preventing, diagnosing or treating a
particular disease. Case conferences and case reports may be published in
medical journals to educate physicians about particular illnesses and how to
treat at them. Editorials in medical journals are short essays that express the
views of the authors, often regarding a research or review article published in
the same issue. Editorials provide perspective on how the
current article fits with other information on the same topic. Letters to the
editor provide a way for readers of the medical journal to express comments,
questions or criticisms about articles published in that
journal.
