You hear this:“No wonder you are
fat.All you ever do is eat.”You feel sad:“I skip my breakfast and supper.I run
every morning and evening. What else can I do?”Basically you can do nothing.Your
genes, not your life habits, determine your weight and your body constantly tries
to maintain it. Albert Stunkard of the University of
Pennsylvania found from experiments that,“80 percent of the children of two
obese(肥胖的) parents become obese,as compared with no more than 14 percent of the
offspring of two parents of normal weight.” How can obese
people become normal or even thin through dieting? Well, dieting can be
effective, but the health costs are tremendous.Jules Hirsch,a research physician
at Rockefeller University, did a study of eight fat people. They were given a
liquid formula providing 600 calories a day.After more than10 weeks,the subjects
lost 45kg on average. But after leaving the hospital, they all regained. The
results were surprising:by metabolic(新陈代谢的) measurement, fat people who lost
large amounts of weight seemed like they were starving. They had psychiatric
problems. They dreamed of food or breaking their diet. They were anxious and
depressed;some were suicidal. They hid food in their rooms.Researchers warn that
it is possible that weight reduction doesn't result in normal weight, but in an
abnormal state resembling that of starved non-obese people.
Thin people, however, suffer from the opposite:They have to make a great
effort to gain weight.Ethan Sims,of the University of Vermont, got prisoners to
volunteer to gain weight. In four to six months, they ate as much as they
could. They succeeded in increasing their weight by 20 to 25 percent. But months
after the study ended, they were back to normal weight and stayed there.
This did not mean that people are completely without hope in
controlling their weight. It means that those who tend to be fat will have to
constantly battle their genetic inheritance if they want to significantly lower
their weight. The findings also provide evidence for something
scientists thought was true-each person has a comfortable weight range. The range
might be as much as 9kg.Someone might weigh 60-69kg without too much effort. But
going above or below the natural weight range is difficult. The body resists by
feeling hungry or full and changing the metabolism to push the weight back to
the range it seeks.

单选题Good Table Manners
Manners play an important part in making a favorable impression at the dinner table. Here are some general rules:
Napkin (餐巾) use
The meal begins when the host unfolds his or her napkin. This is your signal to do the same, so place your napkin on your lap. Unfold it completely if it is a small napkin, or in half, lengthwise (纵向地), if it is a large dinner napkin.
If you need to leave the table during the meal, place your napkin on your chair as a signal to your server that you will be returning. Once the meal is over, place your napkin neatly on the table to the right of your dinner plate. Do not refold it.
Use a napkin only for your mouth. Never use it for your nose, face or forehead.
Use of utensils
(餐具)
Start with the knife, fork or spoon furthest from your plate, and work your way in, using one utensil for each course.
If soup is served, remember to spoon away from yourself. This helps stop the drips. Do not put the entire soup spoon in your mouth. Instead, fill a soup spoon about 75 per cent with soup, and sip (啜饮)it from the side noiselessly.
After finishing dinner, place the knife and fork parallel to one another across the plate with the knife blade facing inward toward the plate.
Using your fingers
Here"s a list of finger foods: sandwiches, cookies, small fruits or berries with stems, French fries and potato chips, and hamburgers.
Chew(咀嚼)with your mouth closed and don"t make noise; don"t talk with your mouth full.
Bread must be broken with your hands. It is never cut with a knife.
Don"t pick something out of your teeth. Instead, excuse yourself to the bathroom.
If possible, try not to cough at the table.
Do not put your elbows (肘) on the table. In France, it is essential to have both hands above the table at the same time.
Do not put bones or anything else on the table. Things that are not eaten should be put on your plate.

An Imaginary World{{/B}}
Imagine a world in which there was suddenly no emotion—a world in which
human beings could feel no love or happiness, no terror or hate. Try to imagine
the consequences of such a transformation. People might not be able to stay
alive: knowing neither joy nor pleasure, neither anxiety nor fear, they would be
as likely to repeat acts that hurt them as acts that were beneficial. They could
not learn: they could not benefit from experience because this emotionless world
would lack rewards and punishments. Society would soon disappear: people would
be as likely to harm one another as to provide help and support. Human
relationships would not exist: in a world without friends or enemies, there
could be no marriage, affection among companions, or bonds among members of
groups. Society's economic underpinnings would he destroyed: since earning $10
million would be more pleasant than earning $10, there would be no incentive to
work. In fact, there would be no incentives of any kind. For as we will see,
incentives imply a capacity to enjoy them. In such a world, the
chances that the human species would survive are next to zero, because emotions
are the basic instrument of our survival and adaptation. Emotions structure the
world for us in important ways. As individuals, we categorize objects on the
basis of our emotions. True we consider the length, shape, size, or
texture, but an object's physical aspects are less important than what it has
done or can do to us—hurt us, surprise us, anger us or make us joyful. We also
use categorizations coloured by emotions in our families, communities, and
overall society. Out of our emotional experiences with objects and events comes
a social feeling of agreement that certain things and actions are "good"
and others are "bad", and we apply these categories to every aspect of our
social life—from what foods we eat and what clothes we wear to how we keep
promises and which people our group will accept. In fact, society exploits our
emotional reactions and attitudes, such as loyalty, morality, pride, shame,
guilt, fear and greed, in order to maintain itself. It gives high rewards to
individuals when perform important tasks such as surgery, makes heroes out of
individuals for unusual or dangerous achievements such flying fighter
planes in a war, and uses the legal and penal system to make people afraid to
engage in antisocial acts.

单选题阅读下面这篇短文,短文后列出7个句子,请根据短文的内容对每个句子做出判断。
An Awful Afternoon
Sometimes I feel that being the mother of three small children is like
running a large circus(马戏团). One afternoon last week, my three sons were playing
peacefully in the backyard, throwing the ball from one to the other. I jumped at
the chance to talk to one of my friends on the phone, but before I got to the
phone, I could tell that the boys had begun to quarrel with each other over
something. I rushed out to make peace, but before I got there, Charles had begun
to fight over this. Even David, the oldest boy, who won't usually fight with
anybody over anything, was involved. First, I made them stop fighting, and then
I examined Mark's eye. I decided that it wasn't going to develop into a black
eye, but I felt that they should suffer at least a little for what they had
done. "I'm going to speak to your father about these when he comes home
tonight," I said. "He and I will think of how to punish you. " Things were
pretty quiet after that for about half an hour, and then Charles broke a glass
in the kitchensink, and at almost the same moment, Mark fell out of the apple
tree. I suppose I will be able to laugh at all these things someday. In the
meantime, I just pray to heaven for patience.
