"Salty" Rice Plant Boosts
Harvests{{/B}} British scientists are breeding a new generation of
rice plants that will be able to grow in soil containing salt water. Their work
may enable abandoned farms to become productive once more. Tim
Flowers and Tony Yeo, from' Sussex University's School of Biological Sciences,
have spent several years researching how crops, such as rice, could be made to
grow in water that has become salty. The pair have recently
begun a three-year programme, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological
Sciences Research Council, to establish which genes enable some plants to
survive salty conditions. The aim is to breed this capability into crops,
starting with rice. It is estimated that each year more than 10m
hectares (公顷) of agricultural land are lost because salt gets into the soil and
stunts (妨碍生长) plants. The problem is caused by several factors. In the tropics,
mangroves (红树林) that create swamps (沼泽) and traditionally formed barriers to sea
water have been cut down. In the Mediterranean, a series of droughts have caused
the water table to drop, allowing sea water to seep (渗透) in. In Latin America,
irrigation often causes problems when water is evaporated (蒸发) by the heat,
leaving salt deposits behind. Excess salt then enters the plants
and prevents them functioning normally. Heavy concentrations of minerals in the
plants stop them drawing up the water they need to survive. To
overcome these problems, Flowers and Yeo decided to breed rice plants that take
in very little salt and store what they do absorb in cells that do not affect
the plants' growth. They have started to breed these characteristics into a new
rice crop, but it will take about eight harvests before the resulting seeds are
ready to be considered for commercial use. Once the
characteristics for surviving salty soil are known, Flowers and Yeo will try to
breed the appropriate genes into all manners of crops and plants. Land that has
been abandoned to nature will then be able to bloom again, providing much needed
food in the poorer countries of the world.

单选题 Weather Map A weather map is an important tool for geographers. A succession of three of four maps presents a continuous picture of weather changes. Weather forecasts are able to determine the speed of air masses and fronts; to determine whether an individual pressure area is deepening or becoming shallow and whether a front is increasing or decreasing in intensity. They are also able to determine whether an air mass is retaining its original characteristics or taking on those of the surface over which it is moving. Thus, a most significant function of the map is to reveal a synoptic picture of conditions in the atmosphere at a given time. All students of geography should be able to interpret a weather map accurately. Weather maps contain an enormous amount of information about weather conditions existing at the time of observation over a large geographical area. They reveal in a few minutes what otherwise would take hours to describe. The United States weather Bureau issues information about approaching storms, floods, frosts, droughts, and all climatic conditions in general. Twice a month it issues a 30-day "outlook" which is a rough guide to weather conditions likely to occur over broad areas of the United States. These 30-day outlo6ks are based upon an analysis of the upper air levels with often Set the stage for the development of air masses, fronts, and storms. Considerable effort is being exerted today to achieve more accurate weather predictions. With the use of electronic instruments and earth satellites, enormous gains have taken place recently in identifying and tracking storms over regions which have but few meteorological stations. Extensive experiments are also in progress for weather modification studies. But the limitations of weather modification have prevented meteorological results except in the seeding of super-cooled, upslope mountainous winds which have produced additional orographical precipitation on the windward side of mountain ranges. Nevertheless, they have provided a clearer understanding of the fundamentals of weather elements.

{{B}}Changing in English Language{{/B}} When
one looks back upon the fifteen hundred years that are the life span of the
English language, he should be able to notice a number of significant truths.
The history of our language has always been a history of constant change—at
times a slow, almost imperceptible change, at other times a violent collision
between two languages. Our language has always been a living growing organism;
it has never been static. Another significant truth that emerges from such a
study is that language at all times has been the possession not of one class or
group but of many. At one extreme it has been the property of the common,
ignorant folk, who have used it in the daily business of their living, much as
they have used their animals or the kitchen pots and pans. At the other extreme
it has been the treasure of those who have respected it as an instrument and a
sign of civilization, and who have struggled by writing it down to give it some
permanence, order, dignity, and if possible, a little beauty. As
we consider our changing language, we should note here two developments that are
of special and immediate importance to us. One is that since the time of the
Anglo Saxons there has been an almost complete reversal of the different devices
for showing the relationship of words in a sentence. Anglo-Saxon (old English)
was a language of many inflections. Modern English has few inflections. We must
now depend largely on word order and function words to convey the meanings that
the older language did by means of changes in the forms of words. Function
words, you should understand, are words such as prepositions, conjunctions, and
a few others that are used primarily to show relationships among other words. A
few inflections, however, have survived. And when some word inflections come
into conflict with word order, there may be trouble for the users of the
language, as we shall see later when we turn our attention to such maters as WHO
or WHOM and ME or I. The second fact we must consider is that as language itself
changes, our attitudes toward language forms change also. The eighteenth
century, for example, produced from various sources a tendency to fix the
language into patterns not always set in and grew, until at the present time
there is a strong tendency to restudy and re-evaluate language practices in
terms of the ways in which people speak and write.
