单选题Using HIV Virus to Cure Cancer Scientists are planning to use human immunodeficiency(免疫缺陷) virus (HIV), one of mankind"s most feared viruses, as a carrier of genes which can fight cancer and a range of diseases that cannot be cured. The experts say HIV has an almost perfect ability to avoid the body"s immune (免疫的) defenses, making it ideal for carrying replacement genes into patients" bodies, according to the observer. A team at the California-based Salk Institute, one of the world"s leading research centers on biological sciences, has created a special new breed of HIV and has started negotiations with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA) to begin clinical gene therapy(治疗) trials this year. The first trials are expected to involve patients suffering from cancers that cannot be cured by surgery although project leader Professor Inder Verma said the HIV technique would have "far wider applications". The plan remains very likely to cause controversy since it involves making use of a virus which has caused more than 22 million deaths around the world in the past two decades. Verma said that the idea of using HIV for a beneficial purpose was "shocking" but the fierce nature of HIV had disappeared by having all six of the potentially deadly genes removed. Illnesses such as various cancers are caused when a gene in a patient"s body fails to work properly. In the past two years, breakthroughs in genetics(遗传学) have led gene therapy scientists to try and replace the genes that do not function normally. Unfortunately, the body"s immune defenses have been known to attack the modified genes and make them lose their effects before they can start their task and progress in the field has been held up by the lack of a suitable carrier. The HIV virus has the ability to escape from, and then destroy, the immune defense cells designed to protect our bodies and this makes it attractive to scientists as a way of secretly conveying replacement genes into patients" bodies.

单选题 Mother Nature Shows Her Strength Tornadoes (龙卷风) and heavy thunderstorms moved across the Great Lakes and into Trumbull County on Saturday evening: The storms were dramatic and dangerous. George Snyder was driving the fire truck down Route 88 when he first noticed that a funnel (漏斗状的) cloud was behind him. "I stopped the truck and watched the funnel cloud. It was about 100 feet off the ground and I saw it go up and down for a while. It was moving toward Bradley Road and then suddenly it disappeared," Snyder said. Snyder only saw one of the funnel clouds that passed through northeastern Ohio on Saturday. In Trumbull County, a tornado turned trees onto their sides. Some trees feel onto houses and cars. Other trees fell into telephone and electrical wires as they went down. Amanda Symcheck was having a party when the storm began. "I knew something was wrong," she said. "I saw the sky go green and pink (粉红色). Then it sounded like a train rushing toward the house. I started crying and told everyone to go to the basement for protection." The tornado caused a lot of damage to cars and houses in the area. It will take a long time and much money to repair everything. There was also serious water damage from the thunderstorms. The heavy rains and high wind caused the power to go out in many homes. The storms caused serious flooding in areas near the river. More than four inches of rain fell in parts of Trumbull County. The river was so hight that the water ran into streets and houses. Many streets had to be closed to cars and trucks because of the high water. This made it difficult for fire trucks, police cars, and other rescue vehicles to help people who were in trouble. Many people who live near the river had to leave their homes for their own safety. Some people reported five feet of water in their homes. Local and state officials opened emergency shelters for the people who were evacuated (撤走). The Red Cross served meals to them. "This was a really intense storm," said Snyder. "People were afraid. Mother Nature call be fierce. We were lucky this time. No one was killed."

单选题More Than a Ride to School The National Education Association claims, "The school bus is a mirror of the community." They further add that, unfortunately, what appears on the exterior does not always reflect the reality of a chosen community. They are right — sometimes it reflects more] Just ask Liesl Denson. Riding the school bus has been more than a ride to school for Liesl. Bruce Hardy, school bus driver for Althouse Bus Company has been Liesl"s bus driver since kindergarten. Last year when Liesl"s family moved to Parkesburg, knowing her bus went by her new residence, she requested to ride the same bus. This year Liesl is a senior and will enjoy her last year riding the bus. She says, "It"s been a great ride so far! My bus driver is so cool and has always been a good friend and a good listener. Sometimes when you"re a child adults do not think that what you have to say is important. Mr. Hardy always listens to what you have to say and makes you feel important." Her friends Ashley Batista and Amanda Wolfe agree. Bruce Hardy has been making Octorara students feel special since 1975. This year he will celebrate 30 years working for Althouse Bus Company. Larry Althouse, president of the company, acknowledges Bruce Hardy"s outstanding record: "You do not come by employees like Bruce these days. He has never missed a day of work and has a perfect driving record. He was recognized in 2000 by the Pennsylvania School Bus Association for driving 350,000 accident free miles. Hardy"s reputation is made further evident through the relationships he has made with the students that ride his bus." Althouse further adds, "Althouse Bus Company was established 70 years ago and has been providing quality transportation ever since. My grandfather started the business with one bus. Althouse Bus Company is delighted to have the opportunity to bring distinctive and safe service to our local school and community and looks forward to continuing to provide quality service for many more years to come." Three generations of business is not all the company has enjoyed. Thanks to drivers like Bruce Hardy, they have been building relationships through generations. Liesl"s mother Carol also enjoys fond memories of riding Bruce Hardy"s bus to the Octorara School District.

单选题Working Hard or Hardly Working? According to a recent survey, employees in many companies today work longer hours than employees did in 1979. They also take shorter vacations. It seems that Americans are working harder today than ever before. Or are they? A management consultant, Bill Meyer, decided to find out. For three days, he observed an investment banker hard at work. Meyer wrote down everything the banker did during his long workday, the banker worked 80 hours a week. At the end of the three-day period, Meyer reviewed the banker's activities with him. What did they find out? They discovered that the man spent 80 percent of his time doing busy work. For example, he attended unnecessary meetings, made unnecessary telephone calls, and spent time packing and unpacking his two big briefcases. Apparently, many people believe that the more time a person spends at work, the more she or he accomplishes. However, the connection between time and productivity is not always positive. In fact, many studies indicate that after a certain point, anyone's productivity and creativity begin to decrease. FUrthermore, it is not always easy for individuals to realize that their performance is falling off. Part of the problem is understandable. When employers evaluate employees, they often consider the amount of time on the job in addition to job performance. Employees know this. Consequently, they work longer hours and take less vacation time than they did nine years ago. Although many working people can do their job effectively during a regular 40-hour work week, they feel they have to spend more time on the job after normal working hours so that the people who can promote them see them. A group of head-hunters were asked their opinion about a situation. They had a choice of two candidates for an executive position with an important company. The candidates had comparable qualifications for the job. One could do the job well in a 40-hour work week. The other would do the same job in an 80-hour week just as well. According to a head-hunting expert, the 80-hour-a-week candidate would get the job. The time this candidate spends on the job may encourage other employees to spend more time at work, too. Employers believe that if the employees stay at work later, they may actually do more work. People do not work long hours only for more money. In such fields as advertising, show business, and journalism, the glamour and publicity are worth more than any monetary benefit. Thus the solution is to find a company. that encourages people to do both.

单选题The Marketing Mix Marketing is a total system of business activites designed to plan, price, promote, and distribute want-satisfying products to target markets to achieve organizational objectives. This definition implies that the entire system of business activitiis should be customer-oriented, and a marketing program should start with an idea about a new product and should not end until the customer's wants are completely satisfied, which may be sometime after the sale is made. The combination of the four primary elements that comprise a company's marketing program is termed the marketing mix. The design, implementation, and evaluation of the marketing mix constitute the bulk of a firm's marketing effort. The four elements of the marketing mix are. ·Product—Managing the product ingredient includes planning and developing the right goods and/or services to be marketed by the company. Strategic decisions are also needed for changing existing products, adding new ones, and taking other actions that affect the assortment(分类) of products carried. Strategic decisions are also needed regarding branding, packaging, and various other product features. ·Price—Management must determine the right base price for its products. It must then decide on strategies concerning discounts, freight (货运) payments, and many other price-related factors. ·Distribution—Even though marketing intermediaries(中介)— primarily wholesalers and retailers are largely a noncontrollable environmental factor, an executive has considerable latitude when working with them. Management's responsibility is to select and manage the trade channels through which the products will reach the right market at the right time and develop a distribution system for physically handling and transporting the products through these channels. ·Promotion—Management needs to inform and persuade the market regarding a company's products. Advertising, personal selling, sales promotion and publicity are the major promotional activities. The four ingredients in the marketing mix are interrelated; decisions in one area usually affect actions in the others. Each of the four also contains countless variables. A company may market one item or several—related or unrelated. The item may be distributed through wholesalers or directly to retailers, and so on. Ultimately (最后) ,from the multitude of variables, management must select the combination that will best adapt to the environment, satisfy target markets, and still meet marketing and organizational goals.

单选题 Creating a World without Smoking Smoking will be banned in all pubs, clubs and workplaces from next year after historic votes in the Commons last night. After last-minute appeals from health campaigners, MPs opted for a blanket prohibition which will start in summer 2007, ending months of argument over whether smokers should be barred in pubs and restaurants only. They voted to ban smoking in all pubs and clubs by 384 to 184, a surprisingly large majority of 200. Smoking will still be allowed in the home and in places considered to be homes, such as prisons, care homes and hotels. Smokers lighting up in banned areas will face a fixed penalty notice of £50 and spot fines of £200 will be introduced for failing to display no-smoking signs, with the possible penalty, if the issue goes to court, increasing to £1000. Carpline Flint, the Public Health Minister, also announced that the fine for failing to stop people smoking in banned areas would be increased to £2500—more than ten times the £200 originally proposed. The Bill also allows the Government to increase the age for buying cigarettes. Ministers will consult on raising it from 16 to 18. The Bill now goes to the Lords but will be through by the summer recess. Even a plan to allow smoking to continue in private clubs was thrown out as MPs on all sides were given permission to vote with their conscience rather than on a party line. Patricia Hewitt, the Health Secretary, said the Health Bill would ban smoking in "virtually every enclosed public place and workplace" in England and save thousands of lives a year. Smoke-free workplaces and public places "will become the norm". She said, "An additional 600000 people will give up smoking as a result of this law and millions more will be protected from second-hand smoke." Peter Hollins, director-general of the British Heart Foundation, said, "The vote is a landmark victory for the public health of this country and will save the lives of many people."
