In the next century we"ll be able to alter our DNA radically, encoding our visions and vanities while concocting new life-forms. When Dr. Frankenstein made his monster, he wrestled with the moral issue of whether he should allow it to reproduce, "Had I the right, for my own benefit, to inflict the curse upon everlasting generations?" Will such questions require us to develop new moral philosophies?
Probably not. Instead, we"ll reach again for a time tested moral concept, one sometimes called the Golden Rule and which Kant, the millennium"s most prudent moralist, conjured up into a categorical imperative: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you; treat each person as an individual rather than as a means to some end.
Under this moral precept we should recoil at human cloning, because it inevitably entails using humans as means to other humans" ends and valuing them as copies of others we loved or as collections of body parts, not as individuals in their own right. We should also draw a line, however fuzzy, that would permit using genetic engineering to cure diseases and disabilities but not to change the personal attributes that make someone an individual (IQ, physical appearance, gender and sexuality).
The biotech age will also give us more reason to guard our personal privacy. Aldous Huxley in Brave New World, got it wrong: rather than centralizing power in the hands of the state, DNA technology has empowered individuals and families. But the state will have an important role, making sure that no one, including insurance companies, can look at our genetic data without our permission or use it to discriminate against us.
Then we can get ready for the breakthroughs that could come at the end of the next century and the technology is comparable to mapping our genes: plotting the 10 billion or more neurons of our brain. With that information we might someday be able to create artificial intelligences that think and experience consciousness in ways that are indistinguishable from a human brain. Eventually we might be able to replicate our own minds in a "dry ware" machine, so that we could live on without the "wet ware" of a biological brain and body. The 20th century"s revolution in information technology will thereby merge with the 21st century"s revolution in biotechnology. But this is science fiction. Let"s turn the page now and get back to real science.

Death?{{/B}} People in the past did not question the difference
between life and death. They could see that a person died when his heart stopped

Leaders of the Group of Eight Major Industrialized Nations (G8) will meet in Scotland in July this year. Representatives from China, India, Mexico, South Africa and Brazil have also been invited. Here"s what the G8 leaders want from the meeting.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair wants the G8 to cancel debt to the world"s poorest countries. He wants them to double aid to Africa to 50 billion pounds by 2010. German Chancellor Gerhard Schroder remains doubtful of Blair"s Africa proposals. Schroder"s officials have dismissed the notion that money will solve Africa"s problems as "old thinking". Berlin says that African states should only receive extra money if they can prove they"ve solved the corruption problem.
Russian President Vladimir Putin was doubtful about the value of more aid to Africa. But he has seen a way to make this work to his advantage. France's new immigration and integration law gives the government new powers to encourage high-skilled migration. It takes effect in 2007. The new law authorizes the government to identify particular professions where France has a talent shortage. Then the government will help these identified employers find immigrant workers with needed skills or qualifications. The selected foreign employees will be granted "skills and talents" visas, valid for three years. But some concern that it'll cause brain drain in developing countries.

Moreover, excess calcium supplementation can be harmful, he and other experts said. "The findings probably will surprise clinicians and patients", Bolland said," because they have received very strong messages for many years about the importance of calcium for bone health in guidelines for osteoporosis (骨质疏松症) management and by osteoporosis advocacy groups."
"Clinical trials have shown that calcium supplements often cause minor gastrointestinal (胃肠的) side effects such as constipation (便秘)", Bolland said. "They also cause a small increased risk of kidney stones, heart attacks, high calcium levels and hospitalization with acute gastrointestinal symptoms." He also said. "The small risk of these important adverse effects, together with the moderate risk of minor side effects such as constipation, outweighs any benefits of calcium supplements on fracture."
However, Dr Duffy MacKay, president for the Council for Responsible Nutrition, disagreed with Bolland"s conclusions, and countered that scientific evidence does show that calcium reduces fracture risk. "The degree of benefit varies from study to study," he said. "However, the largest benefit is generally found in those who take their calcium supplements throughout the entirety of a study. Other important factors that influence the benefit of calcium supplementation include giving calcium supplements with other important bone nutrients including vitamin D and vitamin K."
