单选题It happens to us all, however hard we may try to delay the process—we grow old. Surgery may remove wrinkles (皱纹), skin which has become less firm may be tightened by a surgical operation on the face, and hair-dressers may dye grey hair a more youthful color, but we cannot remain young forever. Advances in medicine have made it possible for more people to stay alive longer. However, what is important is the quality of life, and people age differently. Some people remain quite well and able to look after themselves when they get old, but others of the same age are not so lucky. They have to go into a nursing home in order to receive adequate care. The worst aspect of ageing is that often the mind becomes less alert. As people grow older, they often experience loss of short-term memory, although they may well be able to recall quite easily events that happened long ago. Later they may suffer from dementia (痴呆), a disease which gets gradually worse. By no means all elderly people are in this category. Many senior citizens are in possession of all their faculties and see retirement as a time of freedom. Not only that, if they have a generous retirement pension, they are likely to be quite well off, with money to spend on holidays and other luxuries. Because of this, both businesses and government have a new respect for what is known as grey power. By no means, however, does everyone treat OAPs with respect. There are some culture which are noted for the great respect with which they treat their old people, but many people in other cultures regard the old people as having a very low status in society and treat them accordingly. They often consider old people as having one foot in the grave. Someone should remind them that they, too, will be old one day.

单选题Each semester, Andrew Tom receives a term bill outlining his expenses: tuition, dorm fee, student center fee, recreation fee, resident activity fee, health insurance. If only the rest of his expenses were as easy to quantify. "It's like you start out the semester with plenty of money and then $20 for dinner out here and $100 at the department store there, it's gone," said Tom, a Northeastern University third-year student. "And there are so .many things you need like toothpaste or laundry detergent (洗涤剂) that you don't think about until you get here and need it." From the books lining their shelves to the fashionable clothes filling their closets, college students say the expenses of a college education go well beyond tuition and a dining hall meal plan. Many say they arrive on campus only to be overwhelmed by unexpected costs from sports fees to the actual price of a slice of pizza. Balancing a job with schoolwork, especially at colleges known for their heavy workloads like Harvard and MIT, can be tough. So can the pressure students often feel to financially keep pace with their friends. "When you get dragged along shopping, you're going to spend money; if you get dragged to a party and everyone wants to take a cab but you're cheap and want to take a bus. Chances are you'll end up sharing the fee for the cab," said Tom. "I guess you could say no, but no one wants to be the only one eating in the snack bar while your friends are our to dinner." Max Cohen, a biology major at MIT, said he is accustomed to watching fellow students spend $40 a night to have dinner delivered or $50 during a night out at a bar. During the school's recent spring break, friends on trips for the week posted away messages that read like a world map—Paris, Rome, Tokyo. "Meanwhile I stay home and work," said Cohen. "I didn't realize when I came here how much money I would spend or how hard I would have to work to get by." It is a lesson some younger students learn quickly. Others, surrounded by credit card offers, go into debt, or worse, are forced to leave school. "A lot of people don't think twice about how much they spend," said a first-year student at MIT, "and you feel the pressure sometimes to go along with them./

单选题Today more and more people go to websites when looking for information. Although most readers go to websites for news and e-mail, a form of person-to-person news, or in the form of chatting, they also read books on the web. It's called electronic book (e-book). Electronic books could revolutionize reading, but people ought to consider their far-reaching impacts as well. "The e-book promises to cause a slow tragedy on life as we know it," Jason Ohler, professor of technology assessment, university of Alaska Southeast In Juneau, warned the World Future Society, Bethesda, Md. His assessment weighed the pros and cons (赞成和反对的理由) of e-book technology's impact on social relationships, the environment, the economy, etc. Before you curl up (蜷曲) with an e-book, consider the disadvantages. They increase eyestrain due to poor screen resolution, replace a relatively cheap commodity with a more expensive one, and displace workers in print-book production and traditional publishing. E-books make it easy to share data, thereby threatening copyright agreements and reducing compensation (补偿) of authors, as well as creating nonbiodegradable (不可生物降解) trash. On the other hand, e-books save paper and trees, reduce the burden of the carrying and storing of printed books, promote self-sufficiency in learning, and make reading a collaborative experience online. They also create new jobs for writers and artists and encourage self-publishing. In final analysis, Ohler points out, e-books should gain society's approval if a few conditions are met: make them biodegradable and recyclable, solve the problem of eye fatigue, be sure the "have-nots" get the technology, and support e-book training in schools and business.
