单选题Historians tend to tell the same joke when they are describing history education in America. It's the one (51) the teacher standing in the schoolroom door (52) goodbye to students for the summer and calling after them. "By the way, we won World War Ⅱ. " The problem with the joke, of course, is that it's not funny. The recent surveys on (53) illiteracy are beginning to numb: nearly one third of American 17-year-olds cannot even (54) which countries the United States fought against in that war. One third have no idea when the Declaration of Independence was (55) . One third thought Columbus reached the New World after 1750. Two thirds cannot correctly (56) the Civil War between 1850 and 1900. Even when they get the answers right, some are just guessing. Unlike math or science, ignorance of history cannot be (57) connected to loss of international competitiveness. But it does affect our future (58) a democratic nation and as individuals. The good news is that there is growing agreement on what is wrong with the (59) of history and what needs to be done to fix it. The steps are tentative (尝试性的) (60) yet to be felt in most classrooms.

单选题For good or ill, globalization has become the economic buzz-word of the 1990s. National economies are undoubtedly becoming steadily more integrated as cross-border flows of trade, investment and financial capital increase. Consumers are buying more foreign goods, a growing number of firms now operate across national borders, and savers are investing more than ever before in far-flung places. Whether all of this is for good or ill is a topic of heated debate. One positive view is that globalization is an unmixed blessing, with the potential to boost productivity and living standards everywhere. This is because a globally integrated economy can lead to a better division of labor between countries, allowing low-wage countries to specialize in labor-intensive tasks while highwage countries use workers in more productive ways. It will allow firms to exploit bigger economies of scale. And with globalization, capital can be shifted to whatever country offers the most productive investment opportunities, not trapped at home financing projects with poor returns. Critics of globalization take a gloomier view. They predict that increased competition from low-wage developing countries will destroy jobs and push down wages in today's rich economies. There will be a race to the bottom as countries reduce wages, taxes, welfare benefits and environmental controls to make themselves more competitive. Pressure to compete will erode the ability of governments to set their own economic policies. The critic also worry about the increased power of financial markets to cause economic havoc, as in the European currency crises of 1992 and 1993, Mexico in 1994~1995 and South-East Asia in 1997.

问答题Going on holiday can be one of the most memorable events of your fife. But it can be memorably bad. The fact is that it can become a nightmare if you rely totally on travel agencies. With access to the Internet, you are now able to research, to investigate the environment you plan to be in, and to adjust your plans to take local features into account. You can make bookings for flights, accommodation, tours and many kinds of services. Even if you do decide to book through a reliable travel agency, you can still do plenty of research and make informed decisions before doing so. In the end you will usually get lower prices and the result you want, rather than possibly being persuaded into something you may not like. If they recommend certain airlines, accommodations, etc., check prices and alternatives elsewhere. The agency may be working on commission for business partners and so prices can vary considerably.

问答题The generation gap is so great in Hong Kong that the teenagers there rarely turn to their parents or teachers for advice on anything. Whether it be sex, AIDS, school worries or family problems, adults are not considered up to the job. Until now, no one has asked Hong Kong youth, "What do you think?" Some understanding of the emotions of Hong Kong's youth, however, has come from the work of Dr. Jeffrey Days-at the University of Hong Kong. His survey of young people does not focus, for example, on how many drugs they take—but tries to answer the question why. Dr. Day hopes the results, which he plans to explain in full next week, will reveal what troubles—as well as pleases—today's high-school students. Conclusions will be passed on not only to government departments but back to the schools which took part.
