问答题We are now in an inter-disciplinary integration era, the pervasion and cooperation among disciplines has become a general trend for the development of science. We wouldn't have today's advanced computer graphics systems if mathematician hadn't been able to solve problems related to surface geometric. We wouldn't have networks capable of handling massive amounts of data if physicists and astronomers hadn't continuously forged tools to look more deeply into subatomic structures and the cosmos. Chemists' efforts to simulate complex phenomtna and predict the properties of many-electron systems have inspired massively parallel architectures for computing. And the information made available by the sequencing of the human genome has caused us to rethink how to store, manipulate, and retrieve data most effectively. It will take new insights from studies of human cognition, linguistics, neurobiology, computing, and more to develop systems that truly augment our capacity to learn and create.

问答题A good book is often the best urn (瓮) of a life enshrining the best that life could think out; for the world of a man"s life is, for the most part, but the world of his thoughts. Thus the best books are treasuries of good words, the golden thoughts, which, remembered and cherished, become our constant companions and comforters. "They are never alone," said Sir Philip Sidney, "that are accompanied by noble thoughts." Books introduce us into the best society; they bring us into the presence of the greatest minds that have ever lived. We hear what they said and did; we see them as if they were really alive; we sympathize with them, enjoy with them, grieve with them; their experience becomes ours, and we feel as if we were in a measure actors with them in the scenes which they describe. The great and good do not die even in this world. Embalmed in books, their spirits walk abroad. The book is a living voice. It is an intellect to which one still listens.

问答题Traditionally, the woman has held a low position in a marriage partnerships. While her husband went his way she had to wash, stitch and sew. Today the move is to liberate the woman, which may in the end strengthen the marriage union. Perhaps the greatest obstacle to friendship in marriage is the amount a couple usually see of each other. Friendship in its usual sense is not tested by the strain of daily, yearlong cohabitation. Couples need to take up separate interests (and friendship) as well as mutually shared ones, if they are not to get used to the more attractive elements of each other's personalities. Married couples are likely to exert themselves for guests—being amusing, discussing with passion and point—and then to fall into dull exhausted silence when the guests have gone. Once a man confessed, "The great question I have not been able to answer is 'What does a woman want?'" Many husbands wonder the same thing today.

Today there are approximately 1 750 daily newspapers, with a total circulation of over 62 million and more than 580 Sunday papers, with a circulation of almost 60 million.

问答题The news of the first successful cloning of a sheep has sent shock waves around the world. As a result, in many countries, officials and even some scientists are calling for new or strengthened legislation to outlaw human cloning, although at this early date, no concrete measures have been proposed. In the United States, which currently has no law prohibiting the procedure, President Clinton announced an urgent inquiry into the potential ethical and legal implications by the National Bioethics Advisory Commission, which will report its conclusions by the end of May. Meanwhile, Clinton has banned federal funding for human cloning research and asked for a moratorium on nonfederally funded efforts. In addition, both houses of the U. S. Congress had held holding hearings on the issue. Scientists have cloned embryos for the first time from patients with serious diseases and injuries. It is believed that the day will come when some of mankind's most destructive diseases and injuries can be effectively treated through the use of therapeutic stem cells.

问答题One might ask why speculation is permitted when there is so real a danger of loss. The basic reason is that speculation can perform useful functions in the market equilibrium and encourages faster entry of more suppliers. If the price change lagged until after an actual commodity shortage had occurred, the fluctuation would probably be sharper and more sudden. Remedial supply action could not be further delayed. Similarly, if speculators foresee a surplus in some commodity, their selling of futures will help drive the price down to some extent before the surplus actually occurs. When speculators foresee a shortage and bid up the price, they are also helping to conserve the present supply.

问答题The surrogate students are only the latest symptom of an epidemic of corruption that has gripped the Russian higher education system. A report published this week by the Ministry of Education and Moscow's Higher School of Economics (HSE) showed that more than $ 300m was paid in bribes to enter the country's educational establishments last year. A direct bribe to lecturers to enter an institution can be up to $ 30 000 for a top law faculty, the HSE estimates. "In our school alone this spring we caught four impostors who were attempting to sit the entrance tests in place of others," said Grigory Kantorovich, deputy head of the HSE. "Those were not isolated cases; it's a whole, specialised business." Such corruption is multiplied by a burgeoning market in coursework and diplomas written by teachers and lecturers, which can be bought over the Internet. A police spokesman said there was no dedicated unit for tackling corruption in education, but individual cases were investigated if evidence was handed over.

问答题One of the chief concerns of wildlife management is the protection and improvement of the natural habitat so that animals have enough food and water to survive. Wildlife management involves care of the soil to produce good vegetation, it also involves care of plants, not only as a source of food, but also as protection. Animals need cover to hide from their natural enemies and to raise their young safely. Just as crops are harvested, wildlife too must sometimes be "harvested" . By allowing limited hunting, good management can control certain species that threaten to overpopulate their habitat.

问答题Technology trends may push Silicon Valley back to the future. Carver Mead, a pioneer in integrated circuits and a professor of computer science at the California Institute of Technology, notes there are now work stations that enable engineers to design, test and produce chips right on their desks, much the way as editor creates a newsletter on a Macintosh. As the time and cost of making a chip drop to a few days and a few hundred dollars, engineers may soon be free to let their imagination soar without being penalized by expensive failures. Mead predicts that inventors will be able to perfect powerful customized chips over a weekend at the office — spawning a new generation of garage starts-ups and giving the US a jump on its foreign rivals in getting new products to market fast. "We've got more garages with smart people. " Mead observes, "We really thrive on anarchy. "

问答题A recent research suggests that nearly a third of adults, 31%, are not getting enough exercise. That rates of exercise have declined is hardly a new discovery. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, technology and economic growth have created a world in which exercise is more and more an option rather than a necessity. In all, the researchers were able to pool data from 122 countries, covering 89% of the world"s population. They considered sufficient physical activity to be 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week, or 20 minutes of intense exercise three days a week, or some combination of the two. Unsurprisingly, people in rich countries are less active than those in poor ones, and old people are less active than young ones. Less obviously, women tend to exercise less than men—34% are inactive, compared with 28% of men. But there are exceptions. The women of Finland and Iraq, for example, move more than their male countrymen.
