问答题Recent developments in astronomy have made is possible to detect planets in our own Milky Way and in other galaxies. This is a major achievement because, in relative terms, planets are very small and do not emit light. Finding planets is proving hard enough, but finding life on Earth will prove infinitely more difficult. The first question to answer is whether a planet can actually support life. In our own solar system, for example, Venus is far too hot and Mars is far too cold to support life. Only the Earth provides ideal conditions, and even here it has taken more than four billion years for plant and animal life to evolve. Whether a planet can support life depends on the size and brightness of its star, that is its "sun". Imagine a star up to twenty times larger, brighter and hotter than our own sun. A planet would have to be a very long way from it to be capable of supporting life.

问答题This organization is also a manufacturing firm. Here, however, management encourages and rewards risk taking and change. Decisions based on intuition are valued as much as those that are well rationalized. Management prides itself on its history of experimenting with new technologies and its success in regularly introducing innovative products. Managers or employees who have a good idea are encouraged to "run with it", and failures are treated as "learning experiences" . The company prides itself on being market driven and rapidly responsive to the changing needs of its customers. There are few rules and regulations for employees to follow, and supervision is loose because management believes that its employees are hardworking and trustworthy.

问答题The Renaissance embraced, first of all, an impressive record of new achievements in art, literature, science, philosophy, education and religion. Although the foundation of many of these was classical, they soon expanded beyond the measure of Greek and Roman influence. Indeed, many of the achievements in painting, science, politics and religion bore little relation to the classical heritage. Secondly, the Renaissance incorporated a number of dominant ideas and attitudes that gave it the impress of a unique society. Notable among these in general were optimism, and individualism; but the most significant of them all was humanism.

问答题Concern for family values is reducing among younger Japanese as they pursue an inner world of private satisfaction. Data collected by the Japanese government in 1993 show that only 23% of Japanese youth are thinking about supporting their aged parents, in contrast to 63% of young Americans. It appears that many younger-generation Japanese are losing both respect for their parents and a sense of responsibility to the family. Experts attribute the change to Japanese parents' over-spoiling of their children, material plentifulness, and growing concern for private matters. The shift toward individualism among Japanese is most striking among the very young. According to data provided in 1991, 50% of Japanese youth aged 16 to 19 can be labeled "self-centered", compared with 33% among those aged 25 to 29. To earn the label, the young people responded positively to such ideas as "I would like to make decisions without considering traditional values" and "I don't want to do anything I can't enjoy doing".

问答题If the Harry Potter books stand as the essential popular reading for young people, then The Da Vinci Code has captured the crown for grown-ups. With its controversial mix of storytelling and reasoning, the novel remains high on best-seller lists even as it begins its third year since publication. Twenty-five million books, in 44 languages, are in print worldwide and no end is in sight. Booksellers expect The Da Vinci Code to remain a best-seller well into 2005. The unusual success of The Da Vinci Code has been helped by wide access, with the book on sale everywhere from Wal-Mart to airports to supermarkets. The Da Vinci Code has also thrived during a time when both literary and commercial novels struggled, when a tight economy, competition from other media and election-year tensions drove the public to nonfiction works or away from books altogether. Publishers and booksellers say Brown's novel has worked by combining narrative (叙述) excitement and disputed historical detail.

问答题I stopped to let the car cool off and to study the map. I had expected to be near my objective by now, but everything still seemed alien to me. I was only five when my father had taken me abroad, and that was eighteen years ago. When my mother had died after a tragic accident, he did not quickly recover from the shock and loneliness. Everything around him was full of her presence, continually reopening the wound. So he decided to emigrate. In the new country he became absorbed in making a new life for the two of us, so that he gradually ceased to grieve. He did not marry again and I was brought up without a mother"s care, but I lacked for nothing, for he was both father and mother to me. He always meant to go back one day, but not to stay. His roots and mine had become too firmly embedded in the new land.

问答题In order to keep good friends together, we must, first of all, show respect to each other; there must not be any, however little, reluctance, interference or dominance involved. Should interest or temperament match, people tend to agree or become friends, or they part company and cease to be friends. You shall never go too far, disregarding manners, no matter what kind of close or intimate friends you are. Otherwise, that state of harmony and balance is sure to be upset and you are no longer friends. Generally, every one of us, as friends, still hopes to have a private room reserved for ourselves. By always having your own ways, you may risk intruding into that forbidden zone, causing conflict or estrangement. Though failing to show respect to friends only seems to be a trifle, it may turn out destructive in the future as if pre-destined. So the best solution for keeping good friends together is stick to showing manners as you see fit in everyday dealings and never meddle: always show respect to each other, and you'll enjoy lasting friendship.

问答题Stock market can bring a fortune to people. However, it can also take away everything from you overnight. Many individuals think of investing in the stock market as being similar to gambling. When they think of the stock market this way, they miss one big point: A gambler has a negative expected return, while an investor has a positive expected return. Over time, the more money that an individual gambles at a casino, the more money she will lose. In investing, the more money that an individual commits to long-term investing, the more money that the individual will make because the odds are on the side of the investor. Historically, stocks have returned about 10 percent before taxes. People who view the stock market like a casino tend to act like spectators, trading in and out of stocks every few months, or in extreme cases, every few days.
