单选题 Much ink has been spilled on the question of human
hairlessness: why, as Desmond Morris put it in the title of a book published in
i967, humankind is "The Naked Ape." Less attention has been paid, though, to the
fact that humans are not really hairless at all. Per square centimeter human
skin has as many hair follicles (毛囊) as that of other great apes. The difference
is in the fineness of the hair. These fine human hairs do not seem to perform
any of the functions of their counterparts in more hairy species (insulation and
signaling). So what are they for? That is a question addressed
by Isabelle Dean and Michael Siva-Jothy of Sheffield University, in Britain, who
took tremendous persuasion and effort to recruit 29 volunteers--19 men and 10
women. Each had a patch of skin on one arm shaved, marked with a pen and
surrounded by petroleum jelly, and a patch of the same size on the other marked
and surrounded, but not shaved. The bugs had been fed a week and then starved,
so they were eager to eat. Volunteers were asked to look away while a researcher
put a bug on one of the skin patches. The volunteer was then supposed to record,
using a press-button counter, the number of times he perceived the insect moving
on his skin. The difference was significant. When the bug was
on a hairy patch it was detected, on average, every four seconds. When it was on
a shaved patch, more than ten seconds elapsed between detections. Moreover, the
bugs seemed to find it harder to locate a good spot to bite when they were
surrounded by hair. Though no volunteer was actually bitten, because the
vigilance of the watching researcher meant the insects were removed when they
were ready for biting, bugs on hairy skin took about a fifth longer than those
on shaved skin to attempt to bite their hosts. In both cases
men were better off than women when the bugs were released on unshaven patches
of skin, though there was no significant difference between the sexes when they
were shaved. The conclusion is that one reason human body hair has not
disappeared completely is to warn and protect us from the attention of hostile
insects.

单选题Passage Four It had been a long, brutal day on the sales floor for young Brent. He'd had his share of "ups"--what retail salespeople say when it's their turn with the next customer--and more than his share of downs. And now he was in danger of being shut out for the day. He hadn't been shut out in a long time. Even in his early days with the company, he could always sell something to someone. He was a natural. But not on this day. This, of course, exposed him to some good-natured ridicule from his associates, who took not-so-secret delight in seeing the sales genius get his stroke of misfortune. Brent had more at stake here than just professional pride and reputation, however. Brent was a new father. He and his wife, Kay, had decided that she would be a full-time morn, which meant he would financially support the family. When he did well on the sales floor, finances weren't a problem. But when he struggled to make sales, the whole family struggled. Toward the end of the day, a man came in to buy a suit. This was potentially a good sale, the kind that can turn a bad day into a good one--just like that. Brent worked hard to make the sale. But the man hesitated. Brent knew all too well the look he saw in his eyes--the look of a customer about to walk out the door empty-handed. When it became clear that the man was going to leave to do a little comparison shopping, Brent handed him his business card and invited him to return after he'd had a chance to look around. The man looked at Brent's card, then took a long look at Brent. "So you're Brent's boy," the man said, referring to the card that identified him as Brent Jr. "Do you know my dad?" Brent asked. "Sure do," the man said. They chatted for a moment, establishing the link between father and son. Then the man said, "Your dad's a good man. If you're anything like him.., well, tell me again about that suit." Brent called his father that night, but not to recount the story. "I just wanted to thank you," he said, "for giving me a name I can be proud of./

单选题 Passage Two Adolf Hitler
was the ruler of Germany from 1933 to 1945. Guided by concepts of elitism and
racism, he established a brutal totalitarian regime under the ideological banner
of National Socialism, or Nazism. His drive for empire Line resulted in the
devastation of World War II, culminating in Germany's defeat and the reordering
of world power relationships. Hitler failed as a student in the classical
secondary schools, a situation that contributed to his desire to become an
artist. He went to Vienna in 1907 but was unable to gain admission to the
Academy of Fine Arts. He lived a shadowy, alienated existence in multiracial
Vienna until 1913. His years were characterized by melancholy, aimlessness, and
racial hatred—in Vienna he developed his lifelong obsession with the danger that
world Jewry posed to the Aryan race. Hitler's rise to power
paralleled the unstable course of the Weimar Republic, which replaced the fallen
Hohenzollern monarchy(霍亨索伦王朝). The abortive Communist revolution in Germany and
the dictated Peace of Versailles determined Hitler's decision to enter politics.
In 1919 he joined a small political faction in Munich and within the next year
formed the National Socialist German Workers' Party. He directed the
organizations with an iron hand and used its meetings to deliver forceful
rhetorical assaults on Germany's enemies. In 1923 he led the party into the
ill-fated Munich Putsch. This action resulted in his imprisonment.
While in prison at Landsberg, Hitler wrote Mein Kampf(我的奋斗)(德语), which
became the standard work of Nazi political philosophy. He defined the enemy as
world Jewry, international communism, effete liberalism, and decadent
capitalism. Hitler offered instead pure Aryan blood and the renewal of German
nationalism under a fighting elite. Germany would once more become the leading
power on the Continent and gain its living space in central Europe and
Russia.
单选题Musicians are fascinated with the possibility that music may be found in nature; it makes our own desire for art seem all the more essential. Over the past few years no less a bold musical explorer than Peter Gabriel has been getting involved. At the Research Center in Atlanta, Georgia, he has been making music together with Kanzi, one of the bonobo apes (倭黑猩猩) involved in the long-term language acquisition studies of Sue and Duane Savage-Rumbaugh. I have seen the video of Kanzi picking notes out on a piano-like keyboard, with Gabriel and members of his band playing inside the observation booth in the lab. (They did it this way because Kanzi had bitten one of his trainers a few days previously——interspecies communication without its dangers.) The scene is beautiful, the ape trying out the new machine and looking thoughtfully pleased with what comes out. He appears to be listening, playing the right notes. It is tentative but moving, the animal groping for something from the human world but remaining isolated from the rest of the band. It is a touching encounter, and a bold move for a musician whose tune Shock the Monkey many years ago openly condemned the horrors of less sensitive animals experiments than this. What is the scientific value of such a jam session? The business of the Research Center is the forging of greater communication between human and animal. Why not try the fertile and mysterious ground of music in addition to the more testable arena of simple language? The advantage of hearing music in nature and trying to reach out to nature through music is that, though we don't fully understand it, we can easily have access to it. We don't need to explain its working to be touched by it. Two musicians who don't speak the same language can play together, and we can appreciate the music from human cultures far from our own. Music needs no explanation, but it clearly expresses something deep and important, something humans can't live without. Finding music in the sounds of birds, whales and other animals makes the farther frontiers of nature seem that much closer to us.
