单选题 It is 2 a. m. You took too long over dinner, the coast is still a couple of hundred kilometers away and it is essential to get that early morning ferry. And your car radiator pipe bas split. At times like that, the documents making up your insurance kit lying in the front of your car seem useless. The nearest phone was passed three kilometers back, and it would be reasonable to expect some delay in getting breakdown assistance when you have finally phoned through. If on the other hand, you've got a spare in the car, five minutes' work should see you on your way again. The majority of breakdowns do involve minor and easily changed parts. A few basic tools and the right mix of spares are well worth the space they take up. But to sort out which ones are most likely to be needed, and to buy them, can be expensive. That is why the motoring organizations have come up with rental kits. For about 50 pence a day (slightly more to non-members) they will supply a boxed range of spares for a given ear. On returning the kit the motorist pays for any that are used, plus a small fee for repacking. Deposits are about £20. It is much better, however, to reduce the risk of breakdowns by seeing that your car is properly serviced before setting out. Particularly when driving at high speed over long distances in hot weather. Finally, it makes sense to purchase a safety triangle and an emergency plastic windscreen before leaving. Make sure all your fellow travellers know where your documents are; give one a spare set of keys, and slip into the back of your wallet a large banknote for the emergencies where a credit card won't do.

单选题 We first think of the traditional or nuclear family. This is a two-generation family, the father and the mother and their own children. Most couples wanted to have four children, two boys, two girls. Some nuclear families, however, may add one or more grandparents to come to live with them, that is three generations. This kind of family with grandparents, parents, and grandchildren is called an extended family. This family type was not very common during the later half of the twentieth century, but it's becoming more common now as an elderly grandparent moves in to live with a son or daughter. This is more possible now that American homes have become larger. What is interesting, however, is that after the grandchildren move out of the home and start their own families, this extended family shrinks back to a nuclear family, with just two generations again living together, a grandparent and parents, with the grandchildren coming only for occasional visits. Now, the fatherless or motherless family is one kind of what we call a single-parent family. In the fatherless family it's just the mother and her children. As I said, this can be the result of the husband's death, of an unmarried mother, of a separation or divorce. There are also a growing number of motherless families--where the father raises the children, for any of the same reasons. A motherless family may also be fatherless, but still a family with one adult. This is becoming more common in the big cities where a grandmother will raise her daughter's children while the daughter goes elsewhere to work. One other new kind of family is becoming increasingly more common. A single parent with one or more children will marry again. Perhaps the other parent is also a single parent. Together they will start what is called a blended family, which blends together or combines the children from two other families.

单选题 Wesley Autrey can't fly, but he is still being called a real-life Superman! Last week, the brave 50-year-old rescued Cameron Hollopeter, 20, from being hit by a train. The train was entering a subway station in New York City. The young man had fallen from the station's platform and onto the train tracks a few feet below. Autrey, a construction worker and Navy veteran(老兵), was with his two young daughters when he saw Hollopeter fall. Autrey made a quick decision and jumped onto the tracks. He then rolled himself and Hollopeter into a gap, or opening, between the rails. Autrey used his own body to protect the young man. Five of the train's cars passed over the two before stopping completely. The two men were both unharmed. Hollopeter's stepmother, Rachel Hollopeter, called Autrey an 'angel'. Autrey visited the New York Film Academy student in the hospital on Wednesday. For his bravery, Autrey was given a hero's welcome at City Hall. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg presented Autrey with the Bronze Medallion (铜奖章). It is the city' s highest award for achievements by its citizens. Mayor Bloomberg called Audrey ' a great man-a man who makes us all proud to be New Yorkers.' After the ceremony at City Hall, a limousine (豪华轿车)took Autrey to a meeting with multimillionaire businessman Donald Trump. Trump awarded Autrey with $10,000. The heroic father also received $ 5,000 from the New York Film Academy, a trip to Disney World, and one year of free sub way rides. Even after all this attention; Audrey still doesn't see himself as a Superman.' I did it out of a split-second reaction,' Autrey said on CBS' The Early Show. 'And if I had to do it again, I probably would.'

单选题 Cirque du Soleil (say it: Serk du So-lay) is being accused of out-dated thinking about the dangers of AIDS. It is a modem acrobatic circus from Canada that tours in the United States and other countries. Last April, the company fired Matthew Cusick because he was HIV positive. This was after he spent four months learning his part in an act. A spokesman for the circus said Cusick was fired for safety reasons. They said he was a danger to others. He disagreed. Hundreds of people picketed a show in San Francisco. They said that firing him was not legal. Cusick says the company knew he was HIV positive when they hired him. It was not fair to let him put so much time into learning his act, and then fire him before he performed. He says he is not a danger to others. People can only get AIDS if infected blood contacts another person's blood, or open wound. The company says what their acrobats do is very, very dangerous. They perform tricks without nets. Someone might fall and get hurt, It could be bloody. They say it is too risky to let a person with HIV take part in an act. People who run the circus say it hurts to be accused of discrimination. Matthew Cusick says he feels hurt that he can't perform in the big blue and yellow tent. Dozens of artists, actors, writers and entertainers got involved in protesting the firing of Matthew Cusick. Some names you might know are: the Actors' Equity Union (45,000 members), Rosie O'Donnell, Rod McKuen, and Chad Allen. They also protested at a showing in Orange County. They said 'HIV discrimination is unacceptable.'
