复合题 Climate, more than any other single factor, determines the distribution of life on earth. Climatic boundaries establish the limits which organisms can survive. Plants, even more than animals, must be well adapted to climate in order to survive. They cannot move about or take shelter but must be equipped to endure whatever weather conditions are likely to occur. In the harsh conditions of the tundra, for example, low growing mosses, lichens, and a few flowering plants all hug the ground for shelter from icy winds. Animals, despite their ability to move about and find shelter, are just as much influenced by climate as plants are. Creatures such as the camel and the penguin are so highly specialized that they have an extremely limited distribution. Others, such as bears are flexible enough to adapt to a broad range of climates. Oceandwelling organisms are just as sensitive to climatic changes—in this case temperature and salinity—as land animals. Reef corals can survive only in clear warm seawater. Certain foraminifers are so sensitive to changes in their environment that their presence can be taken as an index of sea temperature. Human beings are among the least specialized of all animals and can live almost anywhere. Their clothes and their homes act as a sort of 'miniature climate' that can be taken with them everywhere.
复合题 Kleptomania is an illness of the mind that gives a person the desire to steal. Such a person is not really a thief. They are sick and cannot help themselves. All small children act naturally and as they grow up they normally learn to control their actions, People with kleptomaniac for certain medical reasons have failed to develop control over their desire to take things that do not belong to them. With medical help they may become normal citizens again. The things that a kleptomaniac steals are seldom of great value. They often give away what they have stolen or collect objects without using them.

复合题 I can clearly remember the first time I met Mr. Andrews, my old headmaster, 21 that was over twenty years ago. During the war, I was at school in the north of England. As soon as it ended, my family returned to London. There were not 22 schools left for children to go to and my father had to go from one school to another, asking them to 23 me as a pupil, I used to go with him but he had such a 24 time trying to persuade people even to see him that I seldom had to do any tests. We had been to all the schools near where we lived, but the more my father argued, the more 25 it became. 26 , we went to a school about five miles away from home. The headmaster kept us waiting for 27 an hour. 28 we were waiting, I 29 around at the school building, which was one of those old Victorian structures, completely out of date but still standing. I 30 hear the boys playing in the playground outside when the headmaster's secretary finally 31 us into his office. Mr. Andrews spoke to me first. 'Why do you want to come here?' he asked. I had been thinking of saying something about studying 32 I couldn't 33 remembering the boys outside. 'I don' t know anyone in London,' I said. 'I like to play with the other boys. I like to read a lot of books too,' I 34 . 'All right,' Mr. Andrews said. 'We have one place 35 ,in fact.' My two years at that school were among the happiest of my life.
复合题 In ancient times wealth was measured and exchanged in things that could be touched: food, tools, and precious metals and stones. Then the barter system was replaced by coins, which still had real value since they were pieces of rare metal. Coins were followed by fiat money, paper notes that have value only because everyone agrees to accept them. Today electronic monetary systems are gradually being introduced that will transform money into even less tangible forms, reducing it to a series of 'bits and bytes', or units of computerized information, going between machines at the speed of light. Already, electronic fund transfer allows money to be instantly sent and received by different banks, companies, and countries through computers and telecommunications devices.
复合题 Only one animal can walk 200 miles without stopping once to rest. It would take a person two days and two nights to walk this far, and only one man has ever done it without stopping. What amazing animal has such endurance? The camel! The camel is well known for something else, too. It can cross an entire desert without a single drink of water. Its body is built in a special way to help it store water and food. A person has just one stomach, but a camel has quite a few. Within each stomach are layers and layers of cells. These cells are like tiny water balloons, storing liquids until the camel needs them. When the camel drinks, the ceils grow larger and larger. For a whole week, they can keep the animal's thirst away by sending water to all parts of its body. And did you ever wonder why the camel has a hump? The hump is a storage place for fat. Because it has this storage area, the camel does not need to eat very often. When the animal needs energy, the layers of fat serve as fuel to keep it going on the long, hot days in the burning sun. The camel has one other gift that makes it well suited to arid regions. This gift is its amazing nose. A camel can smell a water hole from miles away! When a camel moves it sways from side to side like a ship on a wavy ocean. Because of this swaying motion, the camel has been called the 'Ship of the Desert.'
