阅读理解 It seems obvious that you don't give away your product for free but this is exactly what indie rock group The Crimea did earlier this year. The band's reasoning goes like this: more people will download the free album than would pay for it. Therefore more people will heat. The Crimea's music. These people will then pay money for concerts by the band and perhaps buy a T-shirt or other merchandise. If the band play regular concerts to crowds of 200 or 300 people they can make more money than they would from sales of a CD. There will always be some people who want something they can hold in their hands so they will release the CD into the shops too—but making money through sales of their music isn't the top priority. The story illustrates the creative thinking going on in the music business in response to dramatic changes over the last few years in the way that people buy music. Sales of music digitally—to computer, phones and MP3 players rose to $2 billion in 2006—an increase of almost 100 percent on the previous year—yet overall record company sales are down. People are simply not buying CDs in record shops in anything like the numbers they used to. This trend looks set to continue, so the big question for the music industry is whether they can successfully manage the move to being primarily a digital industry without profits falling to unacceptable levels. There are both positive and negative signs. On the plus side, more and more people are buying music on mobile phones, which allows people to make impulse purchases—they can buy a song as soon as they hear it. Research by the UK mobile operator 3 suggested that 75 percent of 16 to 24-year-olds wanted to buy a track they liked as soon as they heard it. With so much competition for people's disposable income, a product that you can sell immediately is a big advantage. The bad news for record companies, however, is the amount of music that is downloaded illegally. Piracy—usually in the form of cheaply copied CD—has long been an issue for the music business but the Internet means music can be copied and distributed freely through file-sharing sites on a large scale than ever before. It is this situation that leads bands to start giving away their music for free and promises to make the next few years a very interesting time in the music business.

阅读理解Passage 2  Being your own boss is the dream of most people, but it comes with a price. Since you do not have to answer to someone else, you have to be responsible for your own business. In this sense, the business becomes the new boss. Here are some tips for you to observe. Work-life balance: Staring a business will consume a lot of time and energy. Not letting the business prevent you from having personal time is a challenge. The failure to manage a work-life balance can lead to health problems and lost relationships with family and friends. Making decisions: Since you are the owner, you have the final decision. This can be a tough challenge because you know that you alone have to bear the consequences of your decisions. Self-doubt and criticism: In the beginning, customers and competitors will not take you seriously. Everyone will be quick to share their opinions on what you are doing wrong and why it will not work.  With all this, self-doubt will start to occur. Maybe they are all right. Maybe starting this business was a bad ideA、If you have done your homework, this is the moment to overcome the fear of failure and have the confidence in yourself to keep going. According to the first paragraph. being your own boss means that you should _______.

阅读理解Passage 4 may be able to treat heart attack victims by cloning their healthy heart cells and injecting them into the areas of the heart that have been damaged, and other problems may be solved if human cloning and its technology are not forbidden. With cloning, infertile couples could have children. Current treatments for infertility, in terms of percentages, are not very successfully. Couples go through physically and emotionally painful procedures for a small chance of having children. Many couples run out of time and money without successfully having children. Human cloning could make it possible for many more infertile couples to have children than ever before. We should be able to clone the bone marrow for children and adults suffering from leukemia This is expected to be one of the first benefits to come from cloning technology. We may learn how to switch cells on and off through cloning and thus be able to cure cancer. Cloning technology can be used to test for and perhaps cure gene-related diseases. The above is just a few examples of what human cloning technology can do for mankind This new technology promises unprecedented advancement in medicine if people will release their fears and let the benefits begin. Heart attacks can be treated with human cloning technology by___________.

阅读理解Passage 3school diploma or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma、 their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones. Scientists, mechanics and barbers can take classes to improve their work skills. If they know more or learn more, they can get a better job or earn more money. Continuing education classes give more adults the chances to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from: typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. These are only some of the classes available. Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves. Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings or churches. Most classes are in the evening, so working people can attend The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive. The new idea about education in the U.S. is that__________.

阅读理解 Advertising follows us everywhere. Whenever we turn on the television, listen to the radio or open a newspaper or a magazine, we are bombarded with advertisements. They invite us to try a new type of orange juice, wear X-brand jeans or watch the latest film. They beg us to notice the difference and discover the advantages. They exist to make us want what they are selling. Strangely, the more we are exposed to advertising, the less we notice it. We get so used to seeing advertisements everywhere that they become largely invisible, as if they were another part of our everyday lives. But does that mean that we are no longer affected by them? One advertising expert believes that the special power of advertising lies in the fact that we do not pay much attention to it. Dr. Krugman, who was head of research for a major advertising company for many years, says that the less we notice ads, the more we are affected by them. Dr. Krugman believes that when we stop noticing advertisements, we lower our defenses, allowing the messages of the advertisements to be taken in and stored, ready to be triggered into action at the right moment. He says that the effects of advertising on the individual are small, but over a period of time they have a powerful effect on the masses. A market analyst says that all advertising, no matter how innocent, is misleading in some way. When asked about the power of advertising in research surveys, most people agree that it works, but not on them. Almost everyone believes that they have complete control over how thousands of ads they see every day affect them.
