阅读理解Task 3 (3 points each, 15 points in all)Directions: This task is the same as Task l (No.56 through No.60).Hemingway was born in Illinois, his family took him as a boy on frequent hunting and fishing trips and so acquainted him early with the kinds of virtues ( 美德)such as courage and endurance, which were later reflected in his fiction ( 文学作品). After high school, he worked as a newspaper reporter and then went oversea to take part in World War I. After the war he lived for several years in Paris, where he became part of a group of Americans who felt strange from their country. They considered themselves a lost generation. It was not long before he began to publish the powerful novel “The Sun Also Rises”. His subjects were often war and its effects on people, or contests, such as hunting or bullfighting, which demand stamina and courage.Hemingway's style of writing is striking. His sentences are short, his words simple, yet they are often filled with emotion. A careful reading can show us, furthermore, that he is a master of the pause. That is, if we look closely, we see how the action of his stories continues during the silences, during the times his characters say nothing. This action is often full of meaning. There are times when the most powerful effect comes from restraint (适度).Such times occur often in Hemingway’s fiction. He perfected the art of expressing emotion with few words. The word "stamina" in the last line of paragraph l can most probably be replaced by_______.

阅读理解Task 4 Directions:  This task (No. 61 to No. 65) is the same as Task l.Facial expressions carry meanings that are partly determined by culture. For example,  many Japanese do not show their emotions as freely as Americans do, so teachers in the United States sometimes have trouble knowing whether their Japanese students understand and enjoy their lessons. Another example is the smile. As a common facial expression, it may show affection, convey politeness, or disguise(掩饰) true feelings.  But in different cultures. smiles have different meanings.  Many people in Russia consider smiling at strangers in public to be unusual and even a suspicious behavior.Yet many  Americans smile freely at strangers in public places, for American culture a smile is typically an expression of pleasure. Therefore some Russians believe that Americans smile in the wrong places; some Americans believe that Russians don' t smile enough.  In Southeast Asian cultures,  a smile is frequently used to cover emotional pain or embarrassment. Vietnamese people may tell the sad story of how they had to leave their country but end the story with a smile. The best title for this passage is ________.

阅读理解Passage FourAlan Lake in , a time management expert, thinks that nothing is a total waste of time ,including doing nothing at times. If you arrange things so that you find time to relax and "do nothing" , you will get more done and have more fun doing it.One of his clients , a space engineer , didn't know how to "do nothing”. Every minute of his leisure time was scheduled with intense activities. He had an outdoor-activities schedule in which he switched from skiing to tennis. His girlfriend kept up with him in these activities, although she would have preferred just to sit by the fire and relax once in a while. Like too many people, he felt the need to be doing something all the time, for doing nothing seemed a waste of time. His "relaxing by the fire" consisted of playing chess, reading magazines, or checking emails. For an experiment, Alan asked him to "waste" his time for five minutes during one of their sessions together. What the engineer ended up doing was relaxing, sitting quietly and daydreaming. When he was finally able to admit that emotional reasons caused him to reject relaxing as a waste of time, he began to look more critically at that way of thinking. Once he knew that relaxing was a good use of time, he became less serious about being busy and started enjoying each activity more. Previously he had been so busy doing that he had no time to have fun at anything. He began to do less and have more fun. When Alan saw the client about three years later, he still had as busy a schedule as ever, but he was able to balance his activity with relaxing so that he came back to work Monday morning not feeling tired out from a busy weekend but refreshed. What did “doing nothing" mean to the space engineer at first?
