单选题Building a house costs quite a lot of money. Suppose you plan to build a house. Your first step will be to find a right piece of land. Your choice will depend on many different things. You will probably try to find a sunny place, with pleasant surroundings near shops and bus stops, not too far from your friends and the place where you work. Next you will find a good builder, and together with the builder you will work out a plan. The builder will draw the plan. It will show the number of rooms, their position and size, and other parts, which must be noticed, such as windows, doors, and electric outlets. The builder will work out how much money is needed to build your house. He will work out the cost of the wood, bricks, the glass, and everything else that must be used in building the house. Later on, when he starts to build, this estimate must be corrected and revised. His estimate is based on existing prices, but prices of such things may change, and many other things may happen between the time when he makes the estimate and the time when he builds the house. When the builder gives his estimate, you may wish to change your plan.(You may also wish to change your builder, if his estimate is too high!)You may find that the house you wanted at first costs too much, or that you can spend a little more and add something to your plan. The builder' s estimate depends on the plan, but the final plan depends on the builder's estimate.

单选题G The police fired tear gas and arrested more than 5000 passively resisting protestors Friday in an attempt to break up the largest antinuclear demonstration ever staged in the United States. More than 135000 demonstrators confronted the police on the construction site of a 1,000-megawatt nuclear power plant scheduled to provide power to most of southern New Hampshire. Organizers of the huge demonstration said that the protest was continuing despite the police actions. More demonstrators were arriving to keep up the pressure on state authorities to cancel the project. The demonstrator had charged that the project was unsafe in the densely populated area, would create thermal pollution in the bay, and had no acceptable means for disposing of its radioactive wasters. The demonstrations would go on until the jails and the courts were so overloaded that the state judicial system would collapse. Governor Stanforth Thumper insisted that there would be no reconsideration of the power project and no delay in its construction set for completion in three years. "This project will begin on time and the people of this state will begin to receive its benefits on schedule. Those who break the law in misguided attempts to sabotage the project will be dealt with according to the law," he said. And the police called in reinforcements from all over the state to handle the disturbances. The protests began before dawn Friday when several thousand demonstrators broke through the police lines around the cordoned-off construction site. They carried placards that read "No Nukes is Good Nukes," "Sunpower, Not Nuclear Power," and "Stop Private Profits from Public Peril. " They defied police order to move from the area. Tear gas canisters fired by the police failed to dislodge the protestors who had been prepared with their own gas masks or facecloths. Finally the gas-masked and helmeted police charged into the crowd to drag off the demonstrators one by one. The protestors did not resist the police, but refused to walk away under their own power. Those arrested would be charged with unlawful assembly, trespassing, and disturbing the peace.

单选题Workplace Health Tips When you hear the words "workplace health", what do you think of? Your associations with this phrase are most likely negative: stress, eyestrain, muscle soreness. etc. In fact, over eighty percent of workers complain of some type of health problem related to their job. But it doesn't have to be that way. Here are some simple tips on how to alleviate a few of the most common workplace ailments. Stress: You've susceptible to stress no matter what you job is. It's one of the toughest conditions to beat, and it's also one of the most serious. The best thing you can do if you experience frequent or severe stress is talk to your supervisor. There may be ways to rearrange your schedule or adjust your responsibilities so that you don't feel so overwhelmed. During the milder onset of stress, take repeated deep breaths, which will help you to calm down and confront the situation. Eyestrain: In addition to causing damage to the eyes, spending too much time in front of the computer can lead to headaches. muscle soreness, and general irritability. To minimize these problems, remember to take regular breaks from your computer. Experts recommend looking away from the screen for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes. Also, ensure that your computer screen is clean and well positioned. General Discomfort: For those of us with office jobs, we spend most of our day sitting down. Remember to stand up, walk around, or take a short break so often to keep your muscles from becoming too tight. From: Alberto Martinez To: Dawn Bojanic Subject: Tips for improving workplace health I just read a great article in Living Today Magazine on tips for improving workplace health. I think we should distribute it to the other managers and have them pass it along to their team members. The information concerning computer monitors was particularly interesting. I often experience eyestrain and headaches, and the tips in the article seem like they could really help. I have a copy of the article if you need one. Why don't you look it over and let me know what you think? Thanks.

单选题Urbanization and Its Influence
Over half the world"s people now live in cities. The latest "Global Report on Human Settlements" says a significant change took place last year. The report
1
this week from U.N. Habitat, a United Nations agency.
A century ago,
2
than five percent of all people lived in cities.
3
the middle of this century it could be seventy percent, or
4
six and a half billion people.
Already three-fourths of people in
5
countries live in cities. Now most urban population
6
is in the developing world.
Urbanization can lead to social and economic progress, but also put
7
on cities to provide housing and
8
. The new report says almost two hundred thousand people move
9
cities and towns each day. It says worsening inequalities,
10
by social divisions and differences in
11
, could result in violence and crime unless cities plan better.
Another issue is urban sprawl (无序扩展的城区). This is where cities
12
quickly into rural areas, sometimes
13
a much faster rate than urban population growth.
Sprawl is common in the United States. Americans move a lot. In a recent study, Art Hall at the University of Kansas found that people are moving away from the
14
cities to smaller ones. He sees a
15
toward "de-urbanization" across the nation.
单选题The students who are not______ with the progress they have made in their study will have great success.
单选题 Every country with a monetary system of its own has to have
some kind of market in which dealers in bills, notes, and other
forms of short term credit can buy and sell. The "money market" is a set of
institutions or arrangements for handling what might be called wholesale
transactions in money and short term credit. The need for such facilities
arises in much the same way that a similar need does in connection with the
distribution of any of the products of a diversified economy to their final
users at the retail level. If the retailer is to provide reasonably
adequate service to his customers, he must have active contacts with
others who specialize in making or handling bulk quantities of whatever is his
stock in trade. The money market is made up of specialized facilities of exactly
this kind. It exists for the purpose of improving the ability of the retailers
of financial services—commercial banks, savings institutions, investment houses,
lending agencies, and even governments—to do their job. It has little if any
contact with the individuals or firms who maintain accounts with these various
retailers or purchase their securities or borrow from them. The
elemental functions of a money market must be performed in any kind of modern
economy, even one that is largely planned or socialist, but the arrangements in
socialist countries do not ordinarily take the form of a market. Money markets
exist in countries that use market processes rather than planned allocations to
distribute most of their primary resources among alternative uses. The general
distinguishing feature of a money market is that it relies upon open competition
among those who are bulk suppliers of funds at any particular time and among
those seeking bulk funds, to work out the best practicable distribution of the
existing total volume of such funds. In their market
transactions, those with bulk supplies of funds or demands for them, rely on
groups of intermediaries who act as brokers or dealers. The characteristics of
these middlemen, the services they perform, and their relationship to other
parts of the financial vary widely from country to country. In many countries
there is no single meeting place where the middlemen get together, yet in most
countries the contacts among all participants are sufficiently open and free to
assure each supplier or user of funds that he will get or pay a price that
fairly reflects all of the influences (including his own) that are currently
affecting the whole supply and the whole demand. In nearly all cases, moreover,
the unifying force of competition is reflected at any given moment in a common
price (that is, rate of interest) for similar transactions. Continuous
fluctuations in the money market rates of interest result from changes in the
pressure of available supplies of funds upon the market and in the pull of
current demands upon the market.
