Inthefallof1954,forexample,C.VannWoodwarddeliveredalectureseriesattheUniversityofVirginiawhichchallengedtheprevailingdogmaconcerningthehistory,continuity,anduniformityofracialsegregationintheSouth.HearguedthattheJimCrowlawsofthelatenineteenthandearlytwentiethcenturiesnotonlycodifiedtraditionalpracticebutalsowereadeterminedefforttoerasetheconsiderableprogressmadebyBlackpeopleduringandafterReconstructioninthe1870’s.ThisrevisionistviewofJimCrowlegislationgrewinpartfromtheresearchthatWoodwardhaddonefortheNAACPlegalcampaignduringitspreparationforBrownv.BoardofEducation.TheSupremeCourthadissueditsrulinginthisepochaldesegregationcaseafewmonthsbeforeWoodward’slectures. Thelecturesweresoonpublishedasabook—TheStrangeCareerofJimCrow.Tenyearslater,inaprefacetothesecondrevisededition,Woodwardconfessedwithironicmodestythatthefirstedition“hadbeguntosufferundersomeofthehandicapsthatmightbeexpectedinahistoryoftheAmericanRevolutionpublishedin1776.”ThatwasabitlikehearingThomasPaineapologizeforthetimingofhispamphletCommonSense,whichhadacomparableimpact.AlthoughCommonSensealsohadamassreadership,Painehadintendedtoreachandinspire:hewasnotahistorian,andthusnotconcernedwithaccuracyorthedangersofhistoricalanachronism.Yet,likePaine,Woodwardhadanunerringsenseoftherevolutionarymoment,andofhowhistoricalevidencecouldunderminethemythologicaltraditionthatwascrushingthedreamsofnewsocialpossibilities.MartinLutherKing,Jr.testifiedtotheprofoundeffectofTheStrangeCareerofJimCrowonthecivilrightsmovementbypraisingthebookandquotingitfrequently.
