单选题One silly question I simply can't stand is "How do you feel?" Usually the question is asked of a man in action-a man on the go, walking along the street, or busily working at his desk. So what do you expect him to say? He'll probably say, "Fine, I'm all right." But you've put a bug in his ear-maybe now he's not sure. If you are a good friend, you may have seen something in his face, or his walk, that he did not realize that morning. It starts him worrying a little. First thing you know, he looks in a mirror to see if everything is all right, while you go merrily on your way asking someone else, "How do you feel?" Every question has its time and place. It's perfectly acceptable, for instance, to ask "How do you feel?" if you're visiting a close friend in hospital. But if the fellow is walking on both legs, hurrying to make a train, or sitting at his desk working, it's no time to ask him that silly question. When George Bernard Shaw, the famous writer of plays was in his eighties, someone asked him "How do you feel?", Shaw put him in his place. "When you reach my age," he said, "either you feel all right or you're dead./

单选题{{B}}Task 1{{/B}}{{B}}Directions:{{/B}} {{I}}After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 through 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.{{/I}} No one knows exactly how many disabled (残废的) people there are in the world, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada. In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people. As we get older, many of us will become less mobile (可动的), hard of hearing or have failing eyesight. Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on, the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people's attitude towards them. Disabled people face many physical barriers. Friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or onto buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate, what the severely disabled go through, so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability, which counts.

单选题Man"s first real invention, and one of the most important inventions in history, was the wheel. All transportation and every machine in the world depend on it. The wheel is the simplest yet perhaps the most remarkable of all inventions, because there are no wheels in nature—no living thing was ever created with wheels. How, then, did man come to invent the wheel? Perhaps some early hunters found that they could roll the dead body of a heavy animal through the forest on logs more easily than they could carry it. However, the logs themselves weighed a lot. It must have taken a great prehistoric thinker to imagine two thin slices of log connected at their centers by a strong stick. This would roll along just as the logs did yet be much lighter and easier to handle. Thus the wheel and axle came into being, and with them the first carts.

单选题Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 unfinished statements or questions. For each statement there are four choices marked A, B, C and D, you should make the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Most people work eight hours or so every day because they need to make money to support their family. They work not because they like it but that they have to, so they often complain and count the minutes until stopping work or holidays. On the contrary, there are work home with them. They are so crazy about work just as some people are about drugs or alcohol (酒精). They can't do without work. These people are called workaholics (工作狂). In some urban cities, workaholism is so common that people do not regard it as unusual. It is said that many workaholics in New York city went to work when there was no electricity, no air conditioning, no elevators or lights in the year 1977. Workaholics prefer to work rather than do anything else because they don't know how to entertain and they dislike sitting there without doing anything. They don't know how to kill time if they don't work. They can only get pleasure from work. Work is everything for them. As a result, workaholism can cause some problems. First of all, they often have health problems because they don't have time to relax and keep themselves occupied all the time. Secondly, their family life is not happy since they spend little time with their family. Their marriage, often ends in divorce. So workaholism is dangerous in a sense.

单选题Letter 1 Dear Ann, I"m going to give a dinner party next month. I want my guests to enjoy themselves and to feel comfortable. What"s the secret of giving a successful party? Letter 2 Dear Mary, Cook something that would let you spend time with your guests. If a guest offers to help you in the kitchen, accept the offer. It often makes people feel more comfortable when they can help. Before serving dinner, while your guests make small talks in the living room, offer them drinks. Some guests may like wine, but make sure to provide soft drinks for people who don"t. At the dinner table, let your guests serve themselves. Offer them a second serving after they finish, but don"t ask more than once. Most guests will take more if they want. Perhaps the most important rule of all is to be natural. Treat your guests as you want them to treat you when you"re in their home—that is, act naturally toward them, and don"t try too hard to be polite. Have a good time in a pleasant atmosphere. Ann

单选题Some people think they have an answer to the troubles of automobile crowding and dirty air in large cities. Their answer is the bicycle, or "bike". In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called Bike for a Better City. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines. For several years this group has been trying to get the city government to help bike riders. For example, they want the city to draw bicycle lanes on some of the main streets, because when bike riders must use the same lanes as cars, there are accidents. Bike for a Better City feels that if there were special lanes more people would use bikes. But no bicycle lanes have been drawn. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea—they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike. The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. Only on weekends, Central Park is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only, but Bike for a Better City says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown.
