单选题A scientist who wants to predict the way in which consumers (消费者) will spend their money must study consumer behavior. He must obtain data both on the resources of consumers and on the motives that tend to encourage or discourage money spending. If an economist was asked which of three groups borrow most -- people with rising incomes, stable incomes, or decreasing incomes -- he would probably answer, those with decreasing incomes. Actually years 1947-1950, the answer was: people with rising incomes. People with decreasing incomes were next and people with stable incomes borrowed the least. This shows us that traditional assumptions(假设) about earning and spending are not always reliable. Another traditional assumption is that if people who have money expect prices to go up they will hasten to buy. If they expect prices to go down, they will postpone buying. But research surveys have shown that this is not always tree. The expectations of price increases may not stimulate buying. The investigations mentioned above were carried out in America; the condition most helpful to spending appears to be price stability. If prices have been stable and people consider that they are reasonable, they are likely to buy. Thus, it appears that the common business policy of maintaining stable prices is based on a correct understanding of consumer psychology(心理学).

单选题One hundred and thirteen million Americans have at least one bank issued credit card. They give their owners automatic credit in stores, restaurants, and hotel, at home, across the country, and even abroad, and they make many banking services available as well. More and more of these credit cards can be read automatically, making it possible to withdraw or deposit money in scattered locations, whether or not the local branch bank is open. For many of us the "cashless society" is not on the horizon—it's already here. While computers offer these conveniences to consumers, they have many advantages for sellers too. Electronic cash registers can do much more than simply ring up sales. They can keep a wide range of records, including who sold what, when, and to whom. This informa tion allows businessmen to keep track of their list of goods by showing which items are being sold and how fast they are moving. Decisions to record return goods to suppliers can then be made. At the same time these computers record which hours are busiest and which employees are the most efficient, allowing personnel and staffing assignments to be made accordingly. And they also identify preferred customers for promotional campaigns. Computers are relied on by manufacturers for similar reasons. Computer-analyzed marketing reports can help to decide which products to emphasize now, which to develop for the future, and which to drop. Computers keep track of goods in stock, of raw materials on hand, and even of the production process itself.

单选题Two sisters, Mildred Hill, a teacher at the Louisville, Kentucky Experimental Kindergarten, and Dr Patty Hill, the principal of the same school, together wrote a song for the children, entitled "Good Morning to All". When Mildred combined her musical talents, as the resident expert on spiritual songs, and as the organist for her church, with her sister's expertise in the area of kindergarten education, "Good Morning to All" was sure to be a success. The sisters published the song in a collection entitled "Song Stories of the Kindergarten" in 1893. 31 years later, after Dr Patty Hill became the head of the Department of Kindergarten Education at Columbia University's Teacher College, a gentleman by the name of Robert H. Coleman published the song, without the sisters' permission. To add insult to injury, he added a second verse, the familiar "Happy Birthday to You". Mr. Coleman's addition of the second verse popularized the song and, eventually, the sisters' original first verse disappeared. "Happy Birthday to You", the one and only birthday song, had altogether replaced the sisters' original title, "Good Morning to All". After Mildred died in 1916, Patty, together with a third sister named Jessica, sprang into action and took Mr. Coleman to court. In court, they proved that they, indeed, owned the melody. Because the family legally owns the song, it is entitled to royalties from it, whenever it is sung for commercial purposes.

单选题Directions: This task is the same as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41-45. The expensive shops in a famous arcade (有拱廊的街道) near Piccadilly were just opening. At this time of the morning, the arcade was almost empty. Mr. Taylor, the owner of a jewellery shop was admiring a new window display. Two of his assistants had been working busily since 8 o'clock and had only just finished. Diamond necklaces and rings had been beautifully arranged on a background of black velvet (丝绒). After gazing at the display for several minutes, Mr. Taylor went back into his shop. The silence was suddenly broken when a large car, with its headlights on and its horn blaring (喇叭响声), roared down the arcade. It came to stop outside the jeweller's. One man stayed at the wheel, two others with black stockings over their faces jumped out and smashed the window of the shop with iron bars. While this was going on, Mr. Taylor was upstairs. He and his staff began throwing furniture out of the window. Chairs and tables went flying into the arcade. One of the thieves was struck by a heavy statue, but he was too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain. The raid (袭击) was all over in three minutes, for the men scrambled back into the car and it moved off at an unbelievable speed. Just as it was leaving, Mr. Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays (烟灰缸) and vases, but it was impossible to stop the thieves. They had got away with thousands of pounds worth of diamonds.
