Early in the 16th century men were
trying to reach Asia by traveling west from Europe. In order to find Asia they
had to find a way past South America. The man who eventually found the way from
the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific was Ferdinand Magellan.
Magellan sailed from Seville in August 1519 with five ships and about 280
men. Fourteen months later, after spending the severe winter on the coast of
Patagonia, he discovered the channel which is now called Magellan's Straits. In
November 1520, after many months of dangers from rooks and storms, the three
remaining ships entered the ocean on the other side of South America.
They then continued, hoping to reach Asia. But they did not see any land
until they reached the islands off the coast of Asia. Before they arrived at
these islands, later known as the Philippines, Magellan was killed in battle.
The remaining officers then had to get back to Spain. They decided to sail
around Africa. After many difficulties, one ship with eighteen men sailed into
Seville three years after leaving. They were all that remained of Magellan's
expedition. However, their achievement was great. They were the first men to
sail round the world.
单选题AIDS is mainly caused by ignorance (无知), and the only cure we have for AIDS at present is prevention. Your best protection is to learn how to say "No, thank you". If someone offers you something "great" from Hong Kong or the Golden Triangle (金三角), just say "No, thank you". If you are approached in a bar, or on the streets by a prostitute (妓女), just say, "No, thank you". If your boyfriend offers you a night of pleasure in his off-campus love nest, just say, "Thank you for your invitation, but I"d rather not. "
Smoking, drinking alcohol (酒), spread first among the "susceptibles", that is, those people who either are not informed about the dangers of these modern drugs or who, because of some other weakness (poverty, loneliness, desperation, etc. ) find it difficult to say "No, thank you".
But we must begin. And, in the case of the diseases of the modern world—lung cancer from smoking too much, coronary disease (冠心病) from Working too hard, mental diseases caused by stress and disappointment, and social and sexual diseases caused by "copying" the behavior of others, we must all learn to say (and to think) "AIDS stops here. I am not going to be a part of the problem".
China is on the march toward the future. But that future holds many, many new and sometimes terrifying dangers for all of us. If we are not prepared to face these new aspects of the modern world, we will be upset by them and our progress will be slowed down considerably. We must learn how to negotiate (谈判) with Western businessmen who have been negotiating for many more years than we have. We have to learn how to select those things which are good from other cultures and how to reject those things which are evil or harmful to us, as individuals and as a nation. We must learn how to blend the progressive and innovative (创新的) ideas from other countries into our great and noble culture.
单选题Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a high school diploma(文凭) or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma. Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones. Scientists, mechanics (技师) and barbers (理发师) can take classes to improve their work skills. If they know more or learn more, they can get a better job or earn more money. Continuing education classes give more adults the chance to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes m choose from; typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. There are only some of the classes available. Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own lives because they want to feel better about themselves. Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings or churches. Most classes are in the evenings, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small, and they are inexpensive.

单选题In some ways the employment interview is like a persuasive speech because the applicant seeks to persuade the employer to employ him or her. A job applicant has the responsibility for ascertaining (确定) certain types of information prior to the interview. First, the applicant knows what kind of job he wants and how that job relates to his career objective. It is important that the applicant be able to state his reasons for wishing to work for a particular company. Second, the applicant should seek as much information as possible concerning the company. Relevant information for the applicant to locate includes such items as the location of the home and regional offices, the financial status of the company, plans for expansion, and company philosophy, information about most major corporations available in reference books and periodicals (期刊).
After gathering information concerning the company, the applicant is ready for the interview. The interviewer"s first impression comes from the interviewee"s appearance. For most interviews, appropriate dress for men is a conservative dark colored suit with a long sleeve white or light blue shirt. For women a conservative, tailored suit or dress is appropriate. Both men and women should have neat, conservative length of hair.
Although hairstyle and dress are matters of taste, many personnel directors form initial impressions from these characteristics. For example, one recent college graduate, who felt himself qualified, interviewed for a public relations job. However, the personnel manager considered this young man"s long hair, sloppy dress, and overly casual manner unsuited for this particular position.
