单选题The motor vehicle has killed and disabled more people in its brief history than any bomb or weapon ever invented. Much of the blood on the street flows essentially from impolite behavior of drivers who refuse to respect the legal and moral rights of others. So the killing on the road may be regarded as a social problem. In fact the enemies of society on wheels are rather harmless people, just ordinary people acting carelessly, you might say. But it is a principle both of law and common morality that carelessness is no excuse when one"s actions could bring death or damage to others. Researchers have estimated that as many as 80 percent of all automobile accidents result from the psychological condition of the driver. Emotional upsets can damage drivers" reactions, slow their judgment, and blind them to dangers that might otherwise be obvious. The experts warn that it is essential for every driver to make a conscious effort to, keep one"s emotions under control. Yet the irresponsibility that accounts for much of the problem is not confined to drivers. Street walkers regularly violate traffic regulations. They are at fault in most vehicle walker accidents. Many cyclists even believe that they are not subject to the basic rules of the road.

单选题The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps 80% of cancer is related to the diet as well. Different cultures are more prone to contract certain illnesses because of the food that is characteristic in these cultures. That food related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, government researchers realized that nitrates (硝酸盐 and nitrites (亚硝酸盐), commonly used to preserve colour in meat, and other food additives, caused cancer. Yet, these carcinogenic (致癌的) additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which things on the packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful. The additives which we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin (青霉素) to beef and poultry, and because of this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows. Sometimes similar drugs are administered to animals not for medicinal purposes, but for financial reasons. The farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.

单选题 Nowadays, cities are becoming more and more crowded. Some pessimists (悲观者)are deeply worried about the serious problems caused by the huge populations. They believe that the public services are already overloaded and near the verge of collapse. Especially in some developing countries, the metropolis(大城市) are overcrowded all the time. Crowded streets, stuffed buses and jammed subways continuously affect people's lives. Some optimists, however, see the current problems as merely part of an evolutionary process. They argue that London and New York had similar problems but were able eventually to establish an orderly and safe environment for their citizens. It seems that people become the controversial factor here. Either they themselves as inhabitants cause inconvenience to each other, or they participate together in city developing plans and contribute efforts to facilitate city life. Human elements are therefore the center for determining the future of big cities.

单选题With the living standard improving rapidly, people's demand upon food and catering (餐饮) service is also changing rapidly. Such changes reflect the improvement of modern lifestyle and life quality. Firstly, people demand that the food should provide overall and balanced nutrition. Now people have realized that food with high protein (蛋白质) and fat is harmful to their health, and hence begin to take in more different nourishment. Secondly, people pay more attention to the sanitation of the food and the catering service. The focus on "green food", "green material" and "fresh material" can be taken as the prime instance to show people's consciousness of the importance of sanitation. At last, the catering service industry has been increasingly standardized (标准化). Now most restaurants can provide their guests with standardized food and service. On the other hand, many restaurants have come up with a lot of special food and services in order to meet various needs of different guests.
