单选题Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36-40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. Language learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will "obey" spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word "obey" is hardly accurate as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gesture and by making questioning noises. Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies make to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It is agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves as particularly expressive as delight, pain, friendliness, and so on. But since these can't be said to show the baby's intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation (模仿) leads on to deliberate (有意的) imitation of sounds made or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises as to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech. It is a problem we need to get out teeth into. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation; and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world. Thus the use at seven months of "mama" as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at other times for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself, I doubt, however, whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new sounds.

For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.{{/I}} In 1848 a settler in distant, undeveloped California discovered gold near Sacramento. As the news spread, a great tide of gold-hungry men flowed into California. They came from all parts of the United States in tens of thousands. There were even gold-seekers from Europe. Some of the people move across the country by cart, traveling almost half a year and meeting many hardships and dangers. Other sailed all the way around South Africa, finally reached the California shore. Since the first discovery was of tiny pieces of gold at the bottom of a stream, many of them searched the waters of rivers for the precious bits of yellow metal. Others made channels to draw off flowing water in order to examine it carefully for bits of gold. They worked with almost full determination and fierce competition(竞争). Life was hard and rough in the days of the California gold rush. A few of the adventurers became rich, but most of them were bitterly disappointed. After having removed from their homes and after traveling the long, dangerous road to California, they had found little or nothing. Some returned home. But many remained in California to work and to settle as ordinary citizens without the riches they had dreamed of. It was this great arrival of population that built up California very fast and led to its becoming a state of the United States in 1850.

单选题In ancient times, the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually included saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates(考生) for the doctor's degree. Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modern industry around the 19th century. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electronic clocks and carefully watched over by managers, is like a group of workers at a car factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an objective test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal judgments. To make up an objective test the teacher writes several questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.

单选题People in some countries cannot use their native language for Web addresses. Neither can Chinese speakers, who have to rely on pinyin. But last Friday, ICANN, the Web"s governing body, approved the use of up to 16 languages for the new system. More will follow in the coming years. The Internet is about to start using the 16 languages of the world. People will soon be able to use addresses in characters (字符) other than those of the Roman alphaber (字母表). The change will also allow the suffix (后缀) to be expressed in 16 other alphabets, including traditional and simplified Chinese characters. But there are still some problems to work out. Experts have discussed what to do with characters that have several different meanings. This is particularly true of Chinese. Most experts doubt the change will have a major effect on how the Internet it used. "There will be some competition between companies to obtain popular words for addresses."

单选题The last part of this century will be an age of space exploration such as man has never known. There are eight planets, at least thirty satellites, and thousands of small stars to be explored. Their total area is about 250 times that of the earth. Spaceships will not be able to land on some of them. But that still leaves to be explored an area ten times as great as the continents of the earth. Exploring space may seem terrifying to some people. No doubt explorers of the past were terrified by the great empty oceans that lay before them. They conquered (克服) their fears, crossed the oceans, and built the New World. In the past when explorers set sail into the unknown, they had to say good-bye to everyone they knew at home. Space explorers will not face such great loneliness. Even when they travel far away from the earth, they will be able to send messages back.

单选题We all get tired when night comes. Then we need to sleep. That is why we need beds. But not all beds are the same. There are many kinds of beds. One kind of bed is the bunk bed. Bunk beds are two beds placed one on top of the other. This kind of bed doesn't take as much room as two beds side by side. It's a nice way to sleep if two or more children are sleeping in the same room. That is why families with many children use them. A water bed can be a lot of fun. It is a very big bag that's filled with water. The water can be made nice and warm. You move up and down as the water moves. It's something like being on a boat. It rocks you to sleep. A cot is a very light bed. When it's not being used, you can fold it up and put it out of the way. Then you can take it out again when you need it. You can use it for a friend. A cot is just right for someone who is sleeping over, In some places people sleep on mats. The mats are made of long pieces of grass. People take them out at night on the floor. In the morning people take them up off the floor and roll them up. Think of how much room a house has with no beds!
