单选题When people print a stamp, any error made on a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on one inexpensive postage stamp has made the stamp worth a million and a half times its original value. More than one hundred years ago in the British colony of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean, the mistake was made. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to a London printer -- Mauritius was to become the fourth country in the world to issue stamps. Before the order was filled and delivered, a bail was planned at Mauritius' s Government House, and stamps were needed to send out the invitations. A local printer was instructed to copy the design for the stamps. He accidentally inscribed the words "Post Office" instead of "Post Paid" on the several hundred stamps that he printed. Today there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left-fourteen One Penny Orange - Reds and twelve Two Penny Blues. Because of the Two Penny Blues' rareness and age, collectors have paid as much as $16,800 for it.
单选题Good morning. I am Professor Armstrong, and I am your laboratory instructor. This class is intended as a necessary part of the course, which Dr. Smith will be in charge of. This class will meet twice a week. This laboratory opens at nine. I expect you to be on time. I do not intend to wait for the latecomers or repeat what has already been covered if you miss the explanation. And do not arrive late and interrupt your neighbor. You may as well not come if you can't be on time. Attendance is equally important. If you miss three lab classes, you're dropped from the labs — no excuses. You can't complete the course without completing the lab. Besides, safety key is here. It's very important to keep things neat and clean, dress properly, and be Careful. You may not eat, drink or smoke in the laboratory and you should always clean the counter and wash your hands both before and after the class. Long hair must be tied back. Large clothing must not be worn. Any laboratory accident must be reported immediately. I hope you'll enjoy the laboratory. It's a wonderful place, and all the requirements I've just mentioned are to be followed. We will begin today by learning about the microscope.
单选题Directions: After reading the following passage, you will
find 5 unfinished statements or questions. For each statement there are four
choices marked A, B, C and D, you should make the best choice and mark the
corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the
center. Every day at least eight Americans choke to
death when food or other objects become lodged in their throats. Their deaths
occur because choking is often confused with heart attack, or because old
remedies, such as hitting a person on the back, are not successful.
However, the Heimlich Maneuver, developed in 1947, is an easily applied
technique to help save the choking victim. It must be applied quickly, for the
choking victim has but four or five minutes to live after an object is stuck in
his throat. The technique involves several procedures, depending on whether the
victim is standing, sitting, or lying down, but the basic maneuver is the
following: Make a list with your hand, place it on the abdomen above the navel
and below the rib cage, and press in and upward with a quick thrust. The
procedure may be repeated several times if necessary until enough force is
applied to eject the object. If you are alone and choking, you should use your
own fist, or press into a table or a sink. Occasionally, the
Heimlich Maneuver results in a cracked rib, a small price to pay for a
life.
