单选题My son Joey was born with club feet. The doctors assured us that with treatment he would be able to walk normally, but would never run very well. The children in our neighborhood ran around as most children do during play, and Joey would jump right in and run and play, too. In seventh grade he decided to go out for the cross-country team. Every day he trained with the team. He worked harder and ran more than any of the others. Although the entire team runs, only the top seven runners have the potential to score points for the school. We didn't tell him he probably would never make the team, so he didn't know. He continued to run four to five miles a day, every day-even the day he had a 103-degree fever. I was worried, so I went to look for him after school. I found him running all alone. He had two more miles to go. The sweat ran down his face and his eyes were glassy from his fever. Yet he looked straight ahead and kept running. We never told him he couldn't run four miles with a 103-degree fever. So he didn't know. Two weeks later, the names of the team runners were called. Joey was number six on the list. Joey had made the team. We never told him he shouldn't expect to make the team. We never told him he couldn't do it. So he didn't know. He just did it.

单选题Ideas about education are changing in the United States. Education today is not just a high school diploma(文凭)or a college degree. Many adults are not interested in going to college. They are interested in other kinds of learning. For them, learning does not end with a diploma.
Continuing education gives these adults the opportunity to increase their knowledge about their own field or to learn about a new field. It also gives them a chance to improve their old skills or to learn new ones. Scientists, mechanics(技师)and barbers(理发师)can take classes to improve their work skills. If they know more or learn more, they can get a better job or earn more money.
Continuing education classes give more adults the chance to learn new skills. There is usually a large variety of classes to choose from: typing, foreign cooking, photography, auto repair, furniture repair, or swimming. There are only some of the classes available.
Some adults take classes for fun or because the class will be useful for them. Other adults take continuing education classes to improve their own. lives because they want to feel better about themselves.
Almost any community college or public school system has a continuing education program. There are classes in schools, community buildings or churches. Most classes are in the evenings, so working people can attend. The classes are usually small; and they are inexpensive.

Each time we produce a new English
dictionary, our aim is always the same: what can we do to make the dictionary
more helpful for students of English? As a result of our research with students
and discussions with teachers, we decided to focus on providing more examples
for this English dictionary. Examples help students to remember
the word they have looked up in the dictionary because it is easier both to
remember and to understand a word within a context (上下文). The examples also show
that words are often used in many different contexts. For these reasons, we have
included 40 per cent more examples in this new book. We edit all
the examples to remove difficult words and to make sure they are easier to
understand. We very much hope this new book will be of use not
only to the students of English but also to the
teachers.
