For most of us, body weight goes up with age--an average of one pound a year after 25, according to the American Medical Association. We can fight against body weight through exercise and the right dietary habits, according to the National Institute on Aging.
Consult your physician before beginning any diet or exercise program. Whichever activity you choose, start slowly---say ten minutes a day--and over the next six to eight weeks, build up to at least 30 minutes three to four times a week. "Grade your exercise between one and ten," suggests Dr. Richard Stein, "with one being not very tired and ten being exhausted. A comfortable exertion level between six and eight is what you should aim at."
In planning your diet, consider these tips: 1. Eat several small meals a day--as many as six. 2. Don''t skip breakfast. 3. Make the last meal of the day a small one. 4. A variety of foods is important for good health, but limit the choice of foods at any one sitting. 5. Drink six to eight ''glasses of water a day. 6. Eat slowly. 7. Eat less than you want.

阅读理解Most people buy a lot of gifts just before Christmas. But some people think they buy too much. They have started a special day called Buy Nothing Day. They don''t want anyone to go shopping on that day.
Buy Nothing Day is November 29. It''s 25 days before Christmas. The idea for Buy Nothing Day started in Vancouver, British Columbia. Now people all over the United States celebrate Buy Nothing Day. In California, parents and children get together to read stories, sing songs and paint pictures. The children talk about why they don''t need a lot of toys.
This year in Albuquerque, New Mexico, high school students wanted to tell other students about Buy Nothing Day. They organized a simple dinner to give people information about Buy Nothing Day. They asked restaurants in the neighborhood to donate(赠送) the food. They made posters(海报) and talked to other students about it. The dinner was a big success, and many students agreed not to buy anything on November 29. The students at the high school liked the idea of this new tradition. Next year, they want to have another dinner to inform more people about Buy Nothing Day!
阅读理解Stress is becoming an increasingly common feature of the workplace. Stress is a highly individual reaction, which varies considerably from person to person, and it is difficult for some employees to avoid it. Undoubtedly, changes in working conditions have led to greater pressure at work at all levels.
However, stress in itself is not harmful. Everyone needs a certain level of stress to enable him or her to feel motivated and to perform effectively. A complete absence of stress can be as damaging as overstress, since it can make people lose interest in their work, and even lead to depression. The difficulties occur when the amount of stress rises above a level which is healthy for a particular individual.
While it may not always be possible to prevent stress, there are a number of ways in which it can be controlled. The first thing that the trainees learn is how to manage their time effectively. This involves, first of all, setting realistic goals for both the short and long term. The trainees are also reminded that when they are under pressure the less important items should be left.
The trainees are encouraged to avoid being defensive, but at the same time they are advised not to be afraid of saying ''no''. They are asked to give reasons only if necessary. They learn, for example, to remind themselves that nothing terrible happens when a demand is refused or a deadline missed. Life goes on.
阅读理解If you''re in your 20s, you own your first car, your career is more or less launched, and you''re starting to look forward to owning a home. But you''re worried, too. Perhaps you''ve got some debt. You probably don''t have much in the way of savings. And with all your expenses, it doesn''t look like you''ll be able to improve that situation soon.
If you wonder how to cut corners, there''s an obvious place to look at you spending habits.
Do you buy a soda each weekend? Waste $1 a day for 40 years and, when you''re set to retire, you''ll find your account is short by $190,000. Grab a calculator and you''ll discover that, over 40 years, going out to dinner twice a month at $40 each time amount to half a million. Even a pack-a-day cigarette habit will lighten your retirement account by $330, 000. And the same with cable TV and those cool earrings. They will probably amount to as much as one million.
So, the first clue to accumulating wealth is this: focus on your spending habits. Here are a couple of tricks to help you save even if you swear you can''t afford to. Stop buying things that fall rather than rise in value. Pay yourself first: before you pay the monthly bills, send $25 to a mutual fund. Stop spending coins. From now on, spend only paper currency, and keep the change every day. Get your family involved, and you''ll double your savings use discount tickets at the supermarket, but use them correctly. How? If you really want to make these tickets worthwhile, you actually must invest into your mutual fund the amount you save by using the tickets. Otherwise, you''re wasting your time —— and your money.

Dear Ms Hawthorne,
I am writing to express my disappointment with the evening my wife and I spent at your restaurant two nights ago. While the food was, as usual, very good, I regret to inform you that the service from our waiter, Max, was most unsatisfactory.
First of all, when we arrived, we discovered our table overlooking the garden had been given away to some other customers. The new table we finally received was by the door and when I complained, Max just laughed.
Furthermore, as we were sitting down, he was extremely familiar with my wife, which deeply made her uncomfortable. When our meal came, he served the food casually and at the end cleared the plates in a most rode fashion.
Regarding the payment of service, I noticed your menu which says that the matter of rewarding service is at the willingness of the guest. In addition, I should point out that on other occasions I have left at least 12 percent. This time, I felt right in leaving nothing.
I regret having to write this letter, but as a regular customer I am extremely displeased and did not expect to be treated in his manner. I look forward to heating from you with a satisfactory reply, or, if you prefer, we could meet in person to resolve this matter.
Sincerely,
Pupen Metcalf
阅读理解Dear Sirs,
I am writing to confirm the loss of my credit card (信用卡). I telephoned your office earlier today. The details of my card are as follows. It is an Apex Silver card in the name of Paul Anderson. The credit card number is 5431 7602 2597 8413. I have had an Apex card since 1994. This card is valid (有效的) from August 2003 to August 2005.
I lost the card yesterday at about 8:30 in the evening. The only case I used the card yesterday was to buy three dictionaries at the Dillons Bookstore in Oxford Street. By accident, I left the card at the shop. When I realized what I had done, I telephoned the shop, but the shop assistants there could not find the card.
Could you please cancel my card immediately and make the necessary arrangements to issue a replacement card to me? I can be contacted at the telephone number of 347-4587-9056. Thank you for your assistance.
Yours faithfully,
Paul Anderson
阅读理解Walking is the easiest and simplest form of exercise. By putting one foot in front of the other, you can start to walk your ways towards a healthier lifestyle. Walking is an easy way to challenge the cardiovascular system (心血管系统) , while at the same time building muscles. But to achieve these goals, a little more than a gentle walk around the block is required.
Walking actually burns as many calories (卡路里,热量单位) as running the same distance——if done in the correct manner and at a reasonable pace (步伐).
Start with a basic program that you can complete three or four times a week. This should include five main steps:
—A beginning warm-up for about 5 minutes.
—A little bit faster period of 5 minutes at medium level (中等速度)
—A 10-minute "burning" at a high level.
—A 5-minute cool down period at a low level again.
A suitable walking pace of around 5 kilometers per horn will burn around 80 calories in 30 minutes.
