Many American women are earning money
outside their homes today. Among women who are eighteen to sixty-four years old,
fifty percent have jobs. In general, working women have had
more education than those who stay at home. Of those who work, thirty two
percent have attended college, compared with twenty percent of those who do not
have jobs. Among women with jobs, eight out of ten drive a car
to work, and eight percent take a vacation away from home during the past year.
Much of the traveling is by air. These figures come from a
report which was written for advertisers. It offers a new picture of women
today. For instance, it tells advertisers that fifty-one percent of all American
women have traveled by air--along with fifty-nine percent of all American
men. The lesson for American business is that many women now
have other interests besides their homes. They like advertisements which show
women in office, planes and cars.

单选题China lies mainly in the northern temperate zone under the influence of monsoon (季风). From September and October to March and April next year monsoon blow from Siberia and the Mongolia Plateau into China and decrease in force as it goes southward, causing dry and cold winter in the country and a temperature difference of 40℃ between the north and south. The temperature in China is 5℃ to 18℃ lower than that in other countries on the same latitude in winter. Monsoon blows into China from the ocean in summer, bringing warm and wet currents, thus rain. Great differences in climate are found from region to region owing to China's extensive territory and complex topography (地形). The northern part of Heilongjiang Province in northeast China has no summer, Hainan Island has a long summer but no winter; the Huaihe River valley features four clear seasons; the western part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is covered by snow all year round; the southern part of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau is spring-like all the year; and the northwestern inland region sees a great drop of temperature in the day.

单选题Our friend, Nick, declared the other day that he thought that the British climate was wonderful, but the British weather was terrible. He went on by pointing out that the British climate was a temperate (温和的) one. "This meant," he said, "that you could always be certain that the weather would never be extreme, at any rate not for any length of time, never very hot and never very cold." He quite rightly pointed out that the rainfall in Britian was not very heavy. "Why then," he asked, "has the British climate such a bad reputation (名声)?" He answered by saying it was because of the extraordinary (非凡的), unreliable weather. There was no part of the year at which you could be certain that the weather would be dry or wet, clear or dull, hot or cold. A bad day in July could be as cold as a mild day in January. Indeed you could feel cold at almost any time of the year. Nick blamed drafty (通风的) British houses for this, but agreed that you could also blame the small amount of sunshine and a great amount of dampness. He admitted he had never experienced one of London's fogs. For the present he advised every student coming to Britian to bring an umbrella and to understand the meaning of that splendid word "drizzle./
单选题A small piece of fish each day may keep the heart doctor away. That"s the finding of an extensive study of Dutchmen in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed at least an ounce of salt water fish per day than those who never ate fish.
The Dutch research is one of three human studies that give strong scientific backing to the long held belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly to the heart.
Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year. But researchers previously have noticed that the incidence (发生率) of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do. There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day, and among the Japanese, whose daily fish consumption averages more than 3 ounces.
For 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men, 20 percent of whom ate no fish.
At the start of the study, the average fish consumption was about two-thirds of an ounce each day with more men eating lean (瘦的) fish than fatty fish.
During the next two decades, 78 of the men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among, the group who regularly ate fish, even at levels far lower than those of the Japanese or Eskimos. This relationship was true regardless of other factors such as age, high blood pressure, or blood cholesterol (胆固醇) levels.
单选题Directions: After reading the following passage, you will
find 5 unfinished statements or questions. For each statement there are four
choices marked A, B, C and D, you should make the best choice and mark the
corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the
center. About 70 million Americans are trying to
lose weight. That is almost 1 out of every 3 people in the United States. Some
people go on diets. This means they eat less of certain foods, especially fats
and sugars. Other people exercise with special equipment, take diet pills, or
even have surgery. Losing weight is hard work, and it can also cost a lot of
money. So why do so many people in the United States want to lose
weight? Many people in the United States worry about not
looking young and attractive. For many people, looking good also means being
thin. Other people worry about their health. Many doctors say being overweight
is not healthy. But are Americans really fat? Almost 30 million
Americans weight at least 20 percent more than their ideal weight. In fact, the
United States is the most overweight country in the world. "The stored fat of
adult Americans weights 2.3 trillion pounds," says University of Massachusetts
anthropologist George Armelagos. He says burning off that stored energy would
produce enough power for 900,000 cars to go 12,000 miles.
Losing weight is hard work, but most people want to find a fast and easy way to
take off fat. Bookstores sell lots of diet books. These books tell readers how
to lose weight. Each year, dozens of new books like these are written. Each one
promises to get rid of fat.
