听力题 I read in the newspaper the other day that we tell between two hundred and three hundred lies every day. It makes me wonder if honesty is still important. There are so many times when we just seem to expect people to be dishonest rather than honest. We expect individuals to try to take advantage of other people whenever they can. And we sometimes expect politicians not always to be honest in their dealings. And we even expect students, sometimes, to cheat on exams or to do things to help their scores. I wonder that if it''s really fair to these people, because I still think there are honest people. The other day a very good friend of mine and I were in a restaurant. When the cashier gave him back his money after we got out of the restaurant, he realized that he had ten or fifteen dollars more than he was supposed to have. He didn''t even hesitate at all. He went right back in and gave it back, and of course, the cashier was very happy. But, I was pleasantly surprised, because it means that there really are people running around who are honest. 听力题 Nearly 400 years ago a young man traveled up to London. The young man had come on foot from Stradford-on-Avon, a small town on the Avon. He was poor, but he had confidence in his future, the future of a great actor. His name was William Shakespeare. He had not been in London very long before he noticed that play-goers all went to the theatre on horseback. "Here is an opportunity!" he thought,"There must be someone to take care of the horses when people are watching a play." So he began to do the job and he did it so well that people all liked him very much. Soon the actors found the young man a very promising actor and he was given an opportunity to play a part on the stage. From that time on, his name became known. But he was not content with the life of an actor. He took great interest in play-writing. The plays he wrote, popular in England of his own time and up to the present day, have shown him to be one of the greatest writers the world has ever produced. He is among those who are loved by the people in all time and in all lands. Nearly 400 years ago a young man traveled up to London. 听力题 The first step in stopping drug abuse is knowing why people start to use drugs. The reasons people abuse drugs are as different as people are from one to another. But there seems to be one common thread: people seem to take drugs to change the way they feel. They want to feel better or to feel happy or to feel nothing. Sometimes, they want to forget or to remember. People often feel better about themselves when they are under the influence of drugs, but the effects don''t last long. Drugs don''t solve problems, they just postpone them. No matter how far drugs may take you, it is always a round trip. After a while, people who misuse drugs may feel worse about themselves and they will use more and more drugs. If someone you know is using or abusing drugs, you can help. The most important part you can play is to be there. You can let your friend know that you care. You can listen and try to solve the problem behind your friend''s need to use drugs. Two people together can often solve a problem that seems too big for one person alone. Studies of heavy drug users in the United States show that they felt unloved and unwanted. They didn''t have close friends to talk to. When you or your friends take the time to care for each other, you are all helping to stop drug abuse. After all, what are friends for? 听力题 The history of plastics is longer than you might expect. In fact the first man-made plastic ever to appear on the market was made over a hundred years ago. It was discovered both by an Englishman and by an American in the same year. But it was the American who first manufactured it on a large scale during the 1860s. Everybody was excited by this new material which was so cheap to buy. Poor young men working in smoky cities were able to buy plastic collars. These collars were hard and uncomfortable. But they did not have to wash them. The poor young men could rub them clean every evening with soap and water. Poor mothers who had not been able to afford playthings for their children, were now able to buy them playthings made of plastic. The history of plastics is longer than you might expect.
