听力题 An Arab prince had heard that in a certain town there was a judge who was clever in discovering truth. The prince disguised himself as a merchant and set off for the town to test the ability of the judge personally. On his way to the town, a beggar asked the prince for money and wanted to ride on the prince’s horse. Therefore, the prince let him sit behind him on the horse. When they got to the town, the beggar suddenly said the horse was his. They argued. They came to the judge and each one said the horse was his. “Leave the horse here and come back tomorrow,” the judge said. Next morning, the judge took them, one by one, to a stable where there were many horses. Each of them recognized the horse without difficulty. Then the judge said to the prince, “The horse is yours,” and ordered the beggar was given fifty blows with a whip. The prince wondered how the judge decided the case. The judge said, “When you went to the stable, I saw the horse turned his head to look at you. When the beggar approached the horse, the horse raised one foot and looked in the other direction indifferently. Thus I knew the horse belonged to you.” An Arab prince had heard that in a certain town there was a judge who was clever in discovering truth. 听力题 We use all sorts of services without thinking about how we get them. But such services cost money. We pay for them through taxes. What would happen ff everyone in the city stop paying taxes? The water supply would stop, the street might not get cleaned, there would be no police to protect people and property. The chief duty of every government is to protect persons and property. More than three fourths of the money spent by our government is used for this purpose. The next largest, amount of public money goes to teach and train our citizens. Billions of dollars each year are spent on schools and libraries. Public money is used to pay the teachers and other public officials. Years ago the government made money from the sale of public lands. But most of the best public lands have now been sold. The money raised was used to help pay the cost of government. There are still some public lands that contain oil, coal, gas, and other natural products. They could be sold, but we want to save them for future years. So we all must pay our share for the services that make our lives comfortable. We use all sorts of services without thinking about how we get them. But such services cost money. 听力题 The two most famous faces in Britain today belong to two women who appear on television almost every night. If you open any popular magazine or newspaper you''ll almost certainly see an article about one of them, with lots of photographs. Their names are Susan Rippon and Anna Ford. Susan reads the 9 o''clock news on BBC Television, and Anna reads the 10 o''clock news on Independent Television. Most news announcers on British television are men, and when Susan began her job at the BBC three years ago, she was the first woman news announcer. Newspapers and magazines started to take an interest in her and reporters started to write about her. Last year, Independent Television also decided to have a woman news announcer and they chose Anna Ford. Newspapers and magazines showed a great interest in her, too. When Anna read the news for the first time on the 10 o''clock program, millions of people who don''t normally watch the program decided to watch it that night, to see Anna Ford. 听力题 The Mediterranean is a word both easy to pronounce and easy to spell—if you only know how. It is a word of five syllables: me-di-ter-ran-ean, meaning mid-earth. The Chinese translation is a happy one, as it means exactly the same thing. Europe owes its early growth to the Mediterranean Sea. On its shores were the seats of early civilization: Egypt, Greece and Rome. The Mediterranean fed the people in these lands and provided a highway for trade and diplomacy. Together, they formed a Mediterranean civilization. In 1869 the Suez Canal was cut after 10 years of arduous work. Linking the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean, the Canal shortened the passage from Europe to Asia by some 10,000 kilometres. The Canal is 171 km long and 65 km wide. An ocean liner takes some 10 hours to go through. It goes slowly, but safely. The Canal is now completely Egyptian property. Foreign ships pay for their passage, making the Canal a good earner of hard currency The Mediterranean is a word both easy to pronounce and easy to spell—if you only know how.
