听力题 Last summer I spent a two-week vacation in Miami Beach, Florida. My roommate and I flew to Miami from New York in three hours. It was the first time for both of us, and we went there because the rates are lower out of season. We stayed at an air-conditioned luxury hotel on the beach. We slept late every morning and then had breakfast outdoors near the pool. When the weather was not too hot, we went sightseeing in the morning. We visited the Seaquarium, the campus of the University of Miami, and the Everglades. In the afternoons, we went swimming in the ocean or the pool, lay in the sun, or went water-skiing. After dinner in the evening, we went dancing in a discotheque or watched the entertainment in the nightclubs. The weather was very good every day, and the holiday went by too quickly. We were both sorry when the vacation ended. Last summer I spent a two-week vacation in Miami Beach, Florida. My roommate and I flew to Miami from New York in three hours. 听力题 There is increasing scientific evidence that large cars cause more highway accidents than small cars. In the news recently was the story of a woman who died of a heart attack while driving her station wagon. The car was moving so fast that it went through the highway-dividing fence, resulting in a collision in which five people died. Those unnecessary deaths are attributable in part to the woman''s choice of a large automobile. A lighter and smaller car probably wouldn''t have gone through the fence, because the heavier the car, the greater the force it will have in a collision. Furthermore, even if the lighter car had broken through the fence, its remaining energy would have been much less, and this would have reduced the chances of serious injury or death. Because of its small size, it might have missed the other car completely. The present design of the oversized automobile is largely responsible not only for the increasing death toll on the highway but also for the rapid depletion of our resources of petroleum, for the pollution of our environment, for urban sprawl, and for the congestion and inconvenience of our cities. 听力题 A top sports official in China''s mainland has said that the mainland will "try its best" to include Taiwan in the torch relay route of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games. "We are holding active consultations with the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games about how to let the people in Taiwan share the Olympic glory," said Liu Peng, head of the State General Administration of Sports, on the sideline of the ongoing annual full session of the 10th National People''s Congress. "As I know, many people in Taiwan hope that the torch relay of the sacred flame of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games can also cover Taiwan," Liu told the deputies representing Taiwan Province during a panel discussion. However, he said that the exact route of the 2008 Olympic torch relay is not finalized yet, and the final plan still needs to be approved by the International Olympic Committee. "The 2008 Games is a grand event for people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. There are many other things we can do in terms of cross-Straits cooperation for the Games," said Liu. The Beijing Olympics'' torch relay is expected to start in March 2008 and last until August 8, when the Games is scheduled to open in the Chinese capital. The relay will involve some 15,000 torch bearers. 听力题 Cambridge is about 90 kilometers northeast of London. It is one of the most beautiful places in Britain. Everything about the city of Cambridge reminds you of its famous university: students on bicycles, the atmosphere of learning, traditions and the magnificent buildings of the 30 colleges that are in the University of Cambridge. Most of the colleges stand on the bank of the Cam River, the gentle river that flows through the heart of the city. Tourists and students like boating in a kind of flat bottom boat to see the colleges or to relax themselves. If the water traffic reminds the visitor of Venice, the road traffic is more likely to recall Beijing or Amsterdam. The streets are full of bicycles, hundreds and hundreds of them. They provide a cheap form of transportation for the students and very conveniently of getting around the Cambridge’s nearer streets. Cambridge is about 90 kilometers northeast of London.
