单选题Directions: There are 20 blanks in the following passage. For each blank there are four choices marked [A], [B], [C] and [D] on the right side of the paper. You should choose the ONE that best fits into the passage. Then mark the corresponding letter on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. When I first entered university, my aunt, who is an English professor, gave me a new English dictionary. I was {{U}} {{U}} 1 {{/U}} {{/U}}to see that it was an English dictionary, {{U}} {{U}} 2 {{/U}} {{/U}}known as a monolingual (单语的 ) dictionary. {{U}} {{U}} 3 {{/U}} {{/U}}it was a dictionary intended for non-native learners, none of my classmates had one. But, to be honest, I found it extremely 70 to use at first. I would look up words in the dictionary and {{U}} {{U}} 4 {{/U}} {{/U}}not fully understand the meaning. I was used to the {{U}} {{U}} 5 {{/U}} {{/U}}bilingual (双语的) dictionaries, in which the words are {{U}} {{U}} 6 {{/U}} {{/U}}both in English and Chinese. I really {{U}} {{U}} 7 {{/U}} {{/U}}why my aunt decided to make things so difficult for me. Now, after studying English at university for three years, I {{U}} {{U}} 8 {{/U}} {{/U}}that monolingual dictionaries are better {{U}} {{U}} 9 {{/U}} {{/U}}learning a foreign language. As I found out, there is {{U}} {{U}} 10 {{/U}} {{/U}}often NO perfect equivalence between two words in two languages. My aunt even goes so far as to {{U}} {{U}} 11 {{/U}} {{/U}}that a Chinese "equivalent" can never give you the {{U}} {{U}} 12 {{/U}} {{/U}}meaning of a word in English! {{U}} {{U}} 13 {{/U}} {{/U}}, she insisted that I read the definition of a word in a monolingual dictionary when I wanted to get a better understanding {{U}} {{U}} 14 {{/U}} {{/U}}its meaning. {{U}} {{U}} 15 {{/U}} {{/U}}, I have come to see what she meant. Using a monolingual dictionary for learners has helped me in another important {{U}} {{U}} 16 {{/U}} {{/U}}. This dictionary uses a {{U}} {{U}} 17 {{/U}} {{/U}}number of words, around 2,000, in its definitions. When I read these definitions, I am {{U}} {{U}} 18 {{/U}} {{/U}}exposed to the basic words and learn how they are used to explain objects and ideas. {{U}} {{U}} 19 {{/U}} {{/U}}this, I can express myself more easily in English.
