听力题 Americans are suffering from a serious sleep deficit while also cutting back on leisure activities as they spend more time at work. A world that“never goes to sleep” offers many diverse activities, but encourages unhealthy and sometimes anti-social lifestyles, for Americans adults.
Adults report living is spending more time to work, a shift that has had a profound impact on their personal lives. Adults report spending less time sleeping, engaged in social and leisure activities. Most Americans say they suffer from sleep problems and when they go to sleep, many sleep alone even if they are married.
These are some of the key findings in the National Sleep Foundation’s 2001“Sleep in America” poll, which looks at the relationship between Americans’lifestyles, sleep habits and sleep problems. Sleep deprivation continues to be widespread in America. According to the NSF poll, 63% of American adults do not get the recommended eight hours of sleep needed for good health, safety, and optimum performance.
In fact, nearly one-third report sleeping less than seven hours each week night, though many adults say they try to sleep more on weekends. The poll shows good news and bad news. The good news is that many Americans say they don’t want to give up any more sleep in spite of their exciting lives. And they would sleep more if they were convinced it would contribute to their quality of life.
The bad news is far too many adults still sacrifice sleep, which is unhealthy and counter-productive. Is getting less sleep a trend in developed society? Perhaps some of you callers may be able to shed some further light. Let’s open up the Dhone lines at 54389282. And we have our first caller now. Please go ahead…

听力题 Experts say some farming activities are seriously damaging Earth''s environment. Bad farming methods can damage soil, forests and water supplies. They also have caused some plants and animals to disappear.
Two groups now say that bad farming methods are threatening the ability of farmers to produce enough food to feed the world population in the future.
The groups used satellite images, maps and modern equipment to study the effect of agriculture on the environment. The study found that the destruction of soil is widespread. Important organic nutrients are being removed from farmland.
Agriculture uses seventy percent of the freshwater in the world each year. The study found that many farmers are wasting water supplies. In addition, chemicals designed to protect crops may pollute waterways.
The report also says as much as thirty percent of the world''s forests have been cut down so the land could be used for agriculture. This has led to a severe loss of wildlife and their environments.

听力题 Today I''d like to mention an interesting television program that will be shown on Oct. 10.
It''s about the brain. It''s a new public television show produced in New York City. The program will investigate how the brain functions and malfunctions. Some interesting topics that will be discussed are dreaming, memory and depression. These topics will be illustrated by using computer animations of the brain to make explanations easy to follow. The show is not for children. But don''t worry; it''s not intended for scientists either. I think the program will be very helpful with the work we are doing in class on the brain. I hope you''ll watch it. Remember it''s on Oct. 10.

听力题 The living conditions for the poor and for immigrants in New York City during the late nineteenth century were truly wretched. Over one and a half million poor people lived in tenements, a form of barracks-like building that could house some five hundred people in a structure lacking heat and plumbing. The resulting poverty, disease, and crime make tenement life degrading and often fatal.
But almost as shocking as the city-condoned horror of the tenements was the government''s neglect of normal city functions. Real estate development was uncontrolled, resulting in factories, stores, and residences springing up randomly without consideration of zoning or building codes. Pollution of waterways was unrestricted, streets were poorly paved, lighting was inadequate, and sewage disposal was insufficient. Some of the poor housing can be blamed on New York''s rapid population growth. But most of the wretched living conditions in the city must be attributed to the corrupt city government of the late nineteenth century.

听力题 A moment''s drilling by the dentist may make us nervous and upset. Many of us cannot stand pain. To avoid the pain of a drilling that may perhaps last a minute or two, we demand some medicine that deadens the nerves around the tooth.
Now it''s true that the human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it. This helps us adjust to the world. Without our nerves — and our brain, which is a group of nerves ?we wouldn''t know what''s happening. But we pay for our sensitivity. We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of torture is based on the human body being open to pain.
But there is a way to handle pain. The big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude towards it. If the dentist says, "This will hurt a little," it helps us to accept the pain. By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation, we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life.

听力题 Life in the twentieth century must demand preparations. Today, all individuals in a country must have adequate schooling to prepare them for their works as well as for their responsibilities as citizens. With this faith in mind, national leaders everywhere are placing more emphasis on the education of the young.
In the United States, government officials, parents, and teachers are working hard to give the children—tomorrow''s decision-makers—best preparation available.
There is no national school policy in the United States. Each of the fifty states makes its own rules and regulations for its schools, but there are many similarities among the fifty school systems. Public schools in all states are supported by taxes paid by the citizens of the individual state. In most states the children are required to attend school until they reach the age of sixteen.
When they become six years old, children begin elementary school. After six years in elementary, they go into junior high school and remain there for three years. The last three years of their public school education are spent in senior high school from which they graduate at the age of eighteen.
A great number of high school graduates continue their education in one of the many colleges or universities in the country. After four years, they receive a bachelor''s degree. Some continue studying for a master''s degree and perhaps a doctor''s degree.
