听力题 There are two kinds of memory: short-term and long-term. Information in long-term memory can be recalled at a later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days and weeks. In contrast, information in short-term m~mory is kept for only a few seconds, usually by repeating the information over and over. The following experiment shows how short-term memory has been studied. Henning stud ied how students who are learning English as second language remember vocabulary. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented all levels of ability in English: beginning, intermediate, advanced, and native speaking students. To begin with, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English. Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question test to see which words they remembered. Each question had four choices. The subjects had to circle the word they had heard in the recording. Some of the questions had four choices that sounded alike. For example, weather, whether, wither, and wether are four words sound alike. Some of the questions had four choices that have the same meaning. Method, way, manner, and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally the subjects took a language proficiency test. Henning found that students with a lower proficiency in English made more of their mistakes on words that sound alike; students with a higher proficiency made more of their mistakes on words that have the same meaning. Henning’s results suggest that beginning students hold the sound of words in their short-term memory, and the advanced students hold the meaning of words in their short-term memory. 听力题 The decade for natural disaster reduction is a program designed to reduce the impact of natural disasters throughout the world. With support from the United Nations, countries will be encouraged to share information about disaster reduction, for instance, information about how to plan for and cope with hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural disasters. One of the most important things the program plans to do is to remind us of what we can do to protect ourselves, for example, we can pack a suitcase with flashlights, a radio, food, drinking water and some tools. This safety kit may help us survive a disaster until help arrives. Besides, the program will encourage governments to establish building standards, emergency response plans and training programs. These measures can help to limit the destruction by natural disasters. The comparatively mild effects of the Northern California Earthquake in. 1989 are good evidence that we do have the technology to prevent vast destruction. The recent disasters, on the other hand, prove that people will suffer if we don''t use that technology. When a highway collapsed in northern California, people were killed in their cars. The highway was not built according to today''s strict standards to resist earthquakes. Individuals and governments have to be farsighted. We should take extra time and spend extra money to build disaster safety into our lives. Although such a program can''t hold back the winds or stop earthquakes, they can save people''s lives and homes. 听力题 What kind of car will we be driving by the year 2010? It may be rather different from the type we know today. With the next decade, bringing greater change than the past 50 years, the people who will be designing the models of tomorrow believe that environmental problems may well accelerate the pace of the car''s development. The vision is that of a machine with 3 wheels instead of 4, electrically-powered, environmentally clean and able to drive itself along intelligent roads, equipped with built-in power supplies. Future cars will pick up the fuel during long journeys from a power source built into the road, or stored in small quantities for travelling in the city. Instead of today''s seating arrangement, two in front, two or three behind, all facing forward, the 2010 car will have an interior with adults and children in a family circle. This view of future car is based on a much more sophisticated road system. Cars will be automatically controlled by a computer. All the drivers will have to do is to say where to go and the computer will do the rest. It will become impossible for cars to crash into one another. The technology already exists for the car to become a true automobile. What kind of car will we be driving by the year 2010? It may be rather different from the type we know today. 听力题 Life in the twentieth century must demand preparations. Today, all individuals in a country must have adequate schooling to prepare them for their works as well as for their responsibilities as citizens. With this faith in mind, national leaders everywhere are placing more emphasis on the education of the young. In the United States, government officials, parents, and teachers are working hard to give the children—tomorrow''s decision-makers—best preparation available. There is no national school policy in the United States. Each of the fifty states makes its own rules and regulations for its schools, but there are many similarities among the fifty school systems. Public schools in all states are supported by taxes paid by the citizens of the individual state. In most states the children are required to attend school until they reach the age of sixteen. When they become six years old, children begin elementary school. After six years in elementary, they go into junior high school and remain there for three years. The last three years of their public school education are spent in senior high school from which they graduate at the age of eighteen. A great number of high school graduates continue their education in one of the many colleges or universities in the country. After four years, they receive a bachelor''s degree. Some continue studying for a master''s degree and perhaps a doctor''s degree. Life in the twentieth century must demand preparations. 听力题 A community theatre is an important part of almost every city or town in the United States. There are over 2,000 community theatres in the United States today, about 4.5 million'' people work or perform in these theatres, for an audience of more than 50 million people annually. These theatres are amateur organizations and are different from professional theatre companies. A community theatre may have its own building or perform in a school or church hall. The actors and actresses do not receive money for their work in the community theatre. They have other jobs to support themselves instead. Small communities can''t support a full time theatre. They cannot pay actors, directors or stage workers, so the theatre participants work for free. One purpose of community theatre is to provide an opportunity for creative work. Many people join in community theatres because they want to perform or to be creative. Several people in a community theatre group were asked why they join. Each one said he or she needed to be creative, to be something original. One man said, "I love to act. It''s the only time I feel alive". Another said, "I have a very boring job. In the play, I can create something." One woman said, "My whole life is occupied by husband and family. I need something more than that." Another purpose of community theatre is to educate and improve the community. Theatre is an art that also introduces new ideas to the audience. 听力题 Over time animals have developed many ways to stay away from predators. A predator is an animal that hunts and eats other animals. Hiding is one of the best ways to stay alive. Some animals hide by looking like the places where they live. To see how this works, let''s look at the sea dragon. It''s a master of disguise. The sea dragon is covered with skin that looks like leaves. The skin helps the dragon look like a piece of seaweed. A hungry meat eater would stay away from anything that looks like seaweed. Other animals stay safe by showing their colors. They want other animals to see them. Scientists call these bright colors warning colors. You have probably seen animals that have warning colors. Some grasshoppers show off their own bright colors. Those colors don''t just look attractive; they tell their enemies to stay away. Of course, hungry predators sometimes ignore the warning. They still go off the grasshopper. If that happens, the grasshopper has a backup of defence. It makes lots of foams. The foams taste so bad that the predator won''t do it again. Color doesn''t offer enough protection for some other animals. They have different defences that help them survive in the wild. Many fish live in groups or schools. That''s because of the safety in numbers. At the first sign of trouble, schooling fish swim as close together as they can get. Then the school of fish makes lots of twists and turns. All that movement makes it hard for predators to see individuals in a large group. Over time animals have developed many ways to stay away from predators.
