Theories 【C1】______ on the individual suggest that children engage in criminal behavior because they were not【C2】______ penalized for previous misdeeds or that they have learned criminal behavior through【C3】______ with others. Theories focusing on the role of society suggest that children commit crimes in【C4】______ to their failure to rise above their socioeconomic status, or as a rejection of middle-class values. Most theories of juvenile delinquency have focused on children from【C5】______ families, ignoring the fact that children from wealthy homes also commit crimes. The latter may commit crimes for lack of adequate parental control. All theories, however, are tentative and are【C6】______ to criticism. Changes in the social structure may indirectly【C7】______ juvenile crime rates. For example, changes in the economy that lead to fewer job opportunities for youth and rising unemployment in general make gainful employment increasingly difficult to obtain. The resulting discontent may in turn lead more youths into criminal behavior. Families have also【C8】______ changes these years. More families consist of one-parent households or two working parents consequently, children are likely to have less supervision at home than was common in the traditional family structure. This lack of parental supervision is thought to be an influence on juvenile crime rates. Other identifiable causes of offensive acts include【C9】______ or failure in school, the increased availability of drugs and alcohol, and the growing incidence of child abuse and child neglect. All these conditions tend to increase the probability of a child committing a criminal act, 【C10】______ a direct causal relationship has not yet been established.

Brad Bushman, a psychologist at Ohio State University, and his colleagues asked nearly 500 volunteers to play a simple game. The【C2】______, an even mix of women and men, believed they were competing against an opponent to press a button as quickly as possible. In【C3】______, they were simply using a computer program that randomly decided whether they had won or lost. When they lost, they received a shock. When the "opponent" lost, the participant gave the shock and chose how long and【C4】______ it should be. Before playing, the participants completed a survey designed to【C5】______ their general concern for the future consequences of their actions. Half the participants then received enough alcohol mixed with orange juice to make them legally drunk, and the other half received a drink with a very 【C6】______ amount of alcohol in it. Subjects who expressed little interest in consequences were more likely to administer longer, stronger shocks. In the sober group, they were slightly more aggressive than people who cared about consequences. When drunk,【C7】______, their aggressiveness was off the charts. "They are【C8】______ the most aggressive people in the study," Bushman says. The good news is this trait can be changed. Michael McKloskey, a psychologist at Temple University, explains that if【C9】______ people can learn to see the situation more realistically, they're able to stay calmer and develop a sense of【C10】______ over their consequences.
(1)Our knowledge of the oceans hundreds of years ago was confined to the two-dimensional shape of the sea surface and the hazards of navigation presented by the irregularities in depth of the shallow water close to the land. The open sea was deep and mysterious, and anyone who gave more than a passing thought to the bottom confines of the oceans probably assumed that the sea bed was flat. Sir James Clark Ross had obtained a sounding of over 2,400 fathoms in 1839, but it was not until 1869, when H.M.S. Porcupine was put at the disposal of the Royal Society for several cruises, that a series of deep soundings was obtained in the Atlantic and the first samples were collected by dredging(挖掘)the bottom. Shortly after this the famous H.M.S. Challenger expedition established the study of the sea-floor as a subject worthy of the most qualified physicists and geologists. A burst of activity associated with the laying of submarine cables soon confirmed the Challenger's observation that many parts of the ocean were two to three miles deep, and the existence of underwater features of considerable magnitude. (2)Today, enough soundings are available to enable a relief map of the Atlantic to be drawn and we know something of the great variety of the sea bed's topography(地形). Since the sea covers the greater part of the earth's surface, it is quite reasonable to regard the sea floor as the basic form of the crust of the earth, with, superimposed upon, it the continents, together with the islands and other features of the oceans. The continents form rugged tablelands which stand nearly three miles above the floor of the open ocean. From the shore line, out a distance which may be anywhere from a few miles to a few hundred miles, runs the gentle slope of the continental shelf, geologically part of the continents. The real dividing line between continents and oceans occurs at the foot of a steeper slope. (3)This continental slope usually starts at a place somewhere near the 100-fathom mark and in the course of a few hundred miles reaches the true ocean floor at 2,500-3,500 fathoms. The slope averages about 1 in 30, but contains steep, probably vertical, cliffs, and gentle sediment-covered terraces, and near its lower reaches there is a long tailing-off which is almost certainly the result of material transported out to deep water after being eroded from the continental masses.
