During foreign invasions from the eleventh century onwards the Islamic unani system of medicine was brought to India. The Indian name for Islamic medicine "unani" refers originally to the Greeks. European colonists from the six- teenth century onwards, gained knowledge of plants, diseases and surgical techniques that were unknown in the West.
