单选题{{B}}TEXT D{{/B}} As a child I was slave to my impulses; now I am slave to my habits, as are ail grown men. I have surrendered my free will to the years of accumulated habits and the past deeds of my life have already marked out a path which threatens to imprison my future. My actions are ruled by appetite, passion, prejudice, greed, love, fear, environment, habit, and the worst of these tyrants is habit. Therefore, if I must be a slave to habit let me be a slave to good habits. My bad habits must be destroyed and new furrows prepared for good seed. I will form good habits and become their slave. And how will I accomplish this difficult feat? Through these scrolls, it will be done, for each scroll contains a principle which will drive a bad habit from my life and replace it with one which will bring me closer to success. For it is another of nature's laws that only a habit can subdue another habit. So, in order for these written words to perform their chosen task, I must discipline myself with the first of my new habits which is as follows: I will read each scroll for thirty days in this prescribed manner, before I proceed to the next scroll. First, I will read the words in silence when I arise. Then, I will read the words in silence after I have partaken of my midday meal. Last, I will read the words again just before I retire at day's end, and most important, on this occasion I will read the words aloud. On the next day I will repeat this procedure, and I will continue in like manner for thirty days. Then, I will mm to the next scroll and repeat this procedure for another thirty days. I will continue in this manner until I have lived with each scroll for thirty days and my reading has become habit. And what will be accomplished with this habit? Herein lies the hidden secret of all man's accomplishments. As I repeat the words daily they will soon become a part of my active mind, but more important, they will also seep into my other mind, that mysterious source which never sleeps, which creates my dreams, and often makes me act in ways I do not comprehend. As the words of these scrolls are consumed by my mysterious mind I will begin to awake, each morning, with a vitality I have never known before. My vigor will increase, my enthusiasm will rise, my desire to meet the world will overcome every fear I once knew at sunrise, and I will be happier than I ever believed it possible to be in this world of strife and sorrow. Eventually I will find myself reacting to all situations which confront me as I was commanded in the scrolls to react, and soon these actions and reactions will become easy to perform, for any act with practice becomes easy. Thus a new and good habit is born, for when an act becomes easy through constant repetition it becomes a pleasure to perform and if it is a pleasure to perform it is man's nature to perform it often. When I perform it often it becomes a habit and I become its slave and since it is a good habit this is my will. Today I begin a new life.

单选题Studies of children's acquisition of language suggest that the faculty of language includes an inborn knowledge of the formal principles of language structure, a knowledge that depends on generically determined portions of (usually) that left cerebral hemisphere. Although it is well established that the left hemisphere is specialized for language, one cannot say that language is "located" in this or that part of the hemisphere. What is known is that language disorders are the results of lesions in the left hemisphere. Disorders of language resulting from damage to the brain are called aphasias. The anterior portion of the "language area" is termed Broca's area. Lesions in this area interfere with the motor and articulatory aspects of language. Speech is slow, labored, grammatically incorrect, and telegraphic; in extreme cases, it may be impossible to carry out. Writing is likewise severely impaired. Comprehension of the spoken or written word, however, may be unimpaired or, nearly so. (It is interesting to note that under emotional stress, a patient with Broca's aphasia may be temporarily fluent. )Because Broca's area is close to the motor cortex, if the former is damaged, the latter is often damaged simultaneously. Hence, such patients often suffer form weakness or paralysis of the right side of the body. Similar lesions in the right hemisphere will cause a left--sided weakness of paralysis but will have no effect on language. Damage to the posterior portion of the "language area," especially to Wernick's area, results in a loss of comprehension of the spoken word and often of the written word. The patient's native language is now like a foreign language. In addition, the patient's speech is rapid and well--articulated, but without meaning. Writing is defective, and words that are heard cannot be repeated, although hearing itself is completely normal. Similar lesions in the right hemisphere usually have no effect on language. Injuries to the "language area" in children result in severe aphasias, but the development of language mechanism in the right hemisphere can often compensate for them to an extraordinary degree. This potential function of the right hemisphere is probably normally/ suppressed by the left hemisphere. In adults, aphasias from similar lesions are often permanent.

单选题{{B}}TEXT D{{/B}} England and France are separated by 22 miles of open ocean at their closest point. Attempts to swim the English Channel have been made by people of all ages and from various walks of life. Each swimmer is drawn to the famous channel for different reasons, but each has the same goal—to conquer the Channel. The English Channel was first crossed in 1875 by Matthew Webb, an Englishman, who swam breaststroke from Dover, England, to Calais, France. Since then, over 3, 700 people have made approximately 4, 500 attempts on the Channel. Only 297 people (199 men and 98 women), however, have successfully duplicated Webb's remarkable achievement. Cold water, rough sea, strong currents, heavy winds and jellyfish are among the many reasons why the success is so slow. Attempts are usually made between late July and mid-October when the water temperature reaches a tolerable level (57-62 degrees Fahrenheit). Swimmers and escort crews must wait for periods of calm seas and light winds lasting 10-20 hours. Much to the frustration of the athletes and their coaches and crews, the weather may only cooperate a few clays each year. Once in the Channel, swimmers are always at the mercy of the elements since temperature, winds and currents can change hourly. Quite often, luck and good timing play as important a role in a swimmer's success as proper physical training and mental preparation. As a result of bogus claims of success, the Channel Swimming Association was established to authenticate all crossings. The Association also issues a list of knowledgeable navigators and provides invaluable advice to those intending to attempt the swim. Interested individuals should notify the Association of their plans several months in advance. Most swimmers attempt to swim from Dover's Shakespeare Beach in England to Cap Griz-Nez, France. Matthew Webb's time of 21 hours and 45 minutes in 1875 has been significantly reduced to 7 hours and 40 minutes—a record set by Penny Lee Dean in 1978. In 1961, Channel swimming entered a new era when Antonio Abertondo from Argentina successfully completed the first double crossing (England-France-England) in 43 hours and 10 minutes. This record now stands at 17 hours and 56 minutes, set by New Zealander Philip Rush in 1985. Remarkably, Cindy Nicholas from Canada has successfully made a double crossing on five separate occasions. And, after years of trying, Jon Erickson from Chicago made the first and only triple crossing of the Channel in 1981 in 38 hours and 37 minutes. Channel swimmers come in all ages, abilities and backgrounds. Two 12-year-old English schoolchildren have completed the Channel on separate occasions. James, a famous swimming coach, completed the swim in September of 1979 at the age of 58. Sixty-five-year-old Ashby Taylor and 47-year-old Stella Taylor are the oldest male and female swimmers currently on record. Swimmers with various disabilities (polio, blindness, missing limbs) have also been successful. These athletes, whether they ultimately succeed or fail, are shining examples of the indomitable human spirit.

单选题 Researchers are increasingly interested in manipulating the environment early in children's lives when they are perceived to be at risk for impoverished intelligence. In a program conducted in North Carolina by Craig Ramey and his associates, pregnant women with IQs averaging 80 were recruited for a study. After their babies were born, half of the infants were cared for during the day at an educational day-care center and half were reared at home by their mothers. Both groups of children were given medical care and dietary supplements, and their families were given social services if they requested them. At the age of 3, the children who attended the educational day-care center had significantly higher IQs than did the home-reared children. This difference was likely due to the decline in the IQs of the home-reared children during the period from 12 to 18 months of age. By the time the children were 5 years old, 39 percent of the home-reared children had IQs below 85 but only 11 percent of the educational day-care children had IQs this low. In the most recent evaluation of this project, positive effects of educational day-care on the intellectual development and academic achievement of the children were evident at age 12. Some parents, such as those in Ramey's study, have difficulty providing an adequate environment for the intellectual needs of their infants. Once these difficulties are a recurring part of the family system, changing efforts probably will be more difficult and costly. Early intervention in the family system is directed at changing parental adaptive and responsive functioning so that permanent negative effects are minimized. In another investigation, the Infant Health and Development (IHD. Program, early intervention with low birth weight children revealed that both home visitation (探望) and an educational child curriculum improved the children's IQs, decreased behavior problems, and improved the home environment. The intervention was more effective with mothers with low educational attainment than those with high educational attainment, more effective for African-American than White children, and effective for most at-risk children. Intervention programs have the most positive effects on children's well-being when theya. begin as early as possible,b. provide services to parents as well as to the children,c. have a low child-teacher ratio,d. have high parental involvement, ande. have frequent contacts. In one review of family intervention studies, intervention was more effective when there were eleven or more contacts between the intervener and the family. While eleven sessions is a somewhat arbitrary number, it does indicate that a certain duration of contact is necessary for intervention success.
