问答题3. The following two excerpts are about a recent BBC documentary program which featured five outstanding Chinese teachers invited to teach in Bohunt School in Hampshire for four weeks. From the excerpts, you can find that the program sparks reflection on Chinese and British education systems. Write an article of NO LESS THAN 300 words, in which you should: 1. summarize the opinions of both sides, and then 2. express your opinion towards the two educational systems, especially on the complementary role of the Chinese educational system on the Western one. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization, language quality and use of academic conventions. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Write your article on ANSWER SHEET FOUR. Bohunt "We need to identify the good things in Chinese education and explore whether that can be transferred back to British schools," said Neil Strowger, Bohunt School's headteacher. Jay Bremner, a math teacher of Bohunt, said, "It appears that information was largely just given to them very quickly, all in one go, with just the expectation that it's there, copy it and do it." he argued, "If we as teachers do not develop lessons tailored to the needs of our particular groups, it will fall on deaf ears—either the students will misbehave, the children won't access to it, or the children won't understand it." Not long after the program started, students began to act unruly in the classroom. They chatted, made faces and put on makeup. One teenager drove the Chinese teachers mad by bringing a kettle and boiling tea in the middle of a class. Chinese side Yang Jun (Teacher from north China's Shanxi Province) Discipline is very important; without discipline, you do not learn well. In China we don't need classroom management skills because everyone is disciplined by families and society, whereas here that is the most challenging part of teaching. In most Chinese schools, the classes are big in size, so discipline can keep students quiet and safe in class, and enable them to learn efficiently. Nonetheless, overemphasizing discipline can restrict children's free development, and over time, turn students into passive listeners. What's more, one has to go through hardship, confusion, even frustration in order to truly comprehend a subject. Otherwise, nothing can be achieved. I never give up simply because something is not fun. And this is the most valuable thing I learned from the highly strict, demanding and competitive Chinese education system. Wang Bing (A columnist holding a doctoral degree in mental health from Peking University) This reflects a cultural gap. In a culture that emphasizes collectivism, it is important to stay the same as others; while in a culture valuing individualism, it is important to be oneself. The Chinese method of teaching is a product of both the structure of their education system, and, more importantly, the culture of their society... The system is geared to teach students to pass tests, not to question or to challenge. The Chinese system is excellent at what it does: rote learning. Participatory teaching gives students more lasting memory and two-way education has at least three advantages: First, it is less exhausting to students, for they can stop and discuss a problem at any time; second, it makes students and teachers more equal, and hence they are more willing to discuss a problem, and third, asking questions is a learning process for students. Xiong Yongchang (Deputy Principal of Beijing 101 Middle School) The class taught by Chinese teachers achieved higher grades because their strict class management and systematic test-oriented teaching. The BBC documentary dramatizes clashes between Chinese teachers and British students, while not reflecting the differences in the two countries' education systems sufficiently. Regardless, the experiment should be viewed in positive light for it is an educational exchange program between China and the United Kingdom and China has been reforming its curriculum and gradually reducing class size and adjusting teaching strategy in the past decade.

问答题2. 题目要求:Some people suggest that universities should consider awarding more vocational courses to prepare graduates for work. However, some disagree, arguing that the purpose of university is to open up students' mind, not to train them. Should there be more vocational courses in colleges? The following are opinions from two sides. Read the excerpts carefully and write your response in about 300 words, in which you should: 1. summarize briefly the opinions from both sides; 2. give your comment. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Parents Barry: My son started a degree course at the local university, but because of his dyslexia eventually graduated with an HND, effectively the practical part of the degree. He currently works in the construction industry and earns much more than several of his co-students who obtained degrees in less necessary disciplines. My comments are not to undermine the value of a good degree. I worked with many degree holders who were very good at their work. It is simply to point out to us that the world needs relevant skills. Lord Digby Jones points out the danger of unfocused degrees, and the simple fact that there are more skills in the world than those obtained from a university. Philips: Yes they should. I see many college graduates could not find a job. Though they have some fancy college degrees, they don't have the vocational skills that are required to do a certain job. After all, many courses have a vocational element, eg: medicine, teaching, vets etc. So why not others? To an extent though, we will have to change snobbish attitudes. Some degrees such as History, English Literature, PPE are considered good but degrees such as Golf Management, Computer Games Design are considered bad. This would encourage schools to advise on vocational courses as an option for their students rather than suggesting them opting for a course that looks good on the university entry statistics. Jacob: There should be many more vocational courses, but they shouldn't be at universities. The conventional university approach is not suitable for vocational training. You end up with an institution which combines the weaknesses of both universities and vocational training colleges, and has the strengths of neither. University faculty Mr. Anderson: Universities should be offering academic courses, training people to think logically and coherently, and teaching research skills. Vocational courses are the domain of technical colleges. Rachel: Vocational training is better done by employers or specialised colleges, because by its nature it is often very specialised. The universities can contribute most effectively by teaching knowledge of general applicability such as mathematics, languages and science. This was the traditional approach of universities, with exceptions in the cases of law and medicine, which tend to operate as separate schools anyway, with a lot of on the job training. Back in the early 1980's Keith Joseph as Mrs. Thatcher's education secretary of the state, forced the universities to move in the direction that Digby Jones is advocating, that is to offer more vocational courses. This distracted universities from their special role in scholarship and research. It may not be a coincidence that the decline of the UK from the leading position it previously had in the traditional fields accelerated from that time on. I suggest that we should let the universities revert to their traditional role, and then set up training colleges, or whatever, for the specialised skills required by industry.

问答题2. The popularity of cross-border online shopping is growing in China. From the excerpts, you can find that cross-border online shopping meets the needs of some customers, but there are also a lot of risks we cannot ignore. Write an article of NO LESS THAN 300 WORDS, in which you should: 1. summarize the different opinions, and then 2. express your opinion. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Excerpt 1 Online Cross-border Shopping Market Remains Large in China Despite a slowing economy, Chinese consumers' online spending on foreign goods is expected to remain strong in the next five years. Market research firm Mintel on Monday forecast China's cross-border online shopping market to grow 18 percent each year to 2020. In 2015, the market ballooned by more than 60 percent, according to Haitao Retailing, Mintel's first report on the topic. Nearly 60 percent of the 3,000 consumers surveyed by the firm said they had bought foreign products online from domestic shopping websites between June and November last year. They liked to shop for beauty and personal care products from South Korea, Japan and France, while Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, China, Macau, China and New Zealand were top for food and drink. Japan and the US were preferred for personal electronic appliances. Mo Daiqing, senior analyst at China E-Commerce Research Centre in Hangzhou, said though China's economy was likely to slow, online shopping for foreign goods would rise for certain. "Because the demand for prime products remains high in China, it takes time for domestic manufacturers to catch up with their foreign peers. The prospect is good especially for things like baby formula, baby care products and luxury items," she said. More than half of the consumers agreed reviews and recommendations were important when deciding what to buy online, while 40 percent said sharing experiences of overseas purchases brought them a sense of achievement, the Mintel report said. Gao Hucheng, the Minister of Commerce, said that supporting cross-border e-commerce would be a major task of his ministry this year. The ministry has previously estimated total cross-border online transactions would reach 6.5 trillion yuan this year. Excerpt 2 Complaints over Online Shopping for Overseas Products Soar Significantly Complaints over "haitao", or direct online purchase of overseas products, soared significantly last year with cosmetics, infant products and bags topping the list, Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission said. The Commission received 1,059 complaints in the field last year, a surge of 369 percent from a year earlier. Among those who filed complaints, 65.3 percent were women. Cosmetics and skin care products bought through "haitao" drew 38 percent of complaints, while infant products and bags and luggage had 22 percent and 21 percent respectively, according to the Commission. "An increasing number of Chinese consumers now purchase overseas products via cross-border online shopping sites, while problems such as businesses failing to deliver goods on time and lost products during delivery process are drawing the ire of Chinese 'haitao' buyers," said Tang Jiansheng, the Commission's deputy secretary-general. Consumers in China prefer some emerging new cross-border online shopping sites such as ymatou.com, fengqu.com and xiaohongshu.com to traditional major shopping sites that have overseas product businesses, while these emerging sites had more complaints, said the Commission. Consumers also complained about long delivery period, unsafe account of cross-border online shopping sites, random change or cancellation of orders, and fake promotion, the Commission said.

问答题2. A new course on the theory and practice of love that will begin in the spring semester next year at China's Tianjin University has stirred much controversy. Write an article of NO LESS THAN 300 words, in which you should: 1. summarize the opinions of different sides, and then 2. express your opinion towards the new course, especially the benefits and changes it will bring. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization, language quality and use of academic conventions. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Write your article on ANSWER SHEET FOUR. Opponents There should not be a set pattern for love and relationships. When romance is treated as a discipline to be taught collectively, it may become as monotonous as buildings in cities. When all the components of falling in love are orchestrated, will it still be wonderful? More unsettlingly, when people have mastered these skills, they may use them to deceive others. Another problem is that students who have learned the theories would certainly want to put them into practice. Such actions may affect their academic performance. Worse still, when students fall in love for the purpose of practicing learned skills, will there be true, unrequited love? Love is not simply about techniques. The failure in finding a partner doesn't lie in a lack of techniques; rather too much emphasis has been placed on the material aspects when seeking a partner. High expectations for the economic prosperity of a partner, especially on the part of women, have made it increasingly difficult to be happy in love. Supporters Zhao Lei: As a college student, I think that we do need a course on love. For university students who have grown up under an exam-oriented educational system, very few of us have had experience of being in love before entering university. As a result, many of my peers know how to study, but do not know how to communicate with the opposite sex. Meanwhile, tragedies on campus such as committing suicide "for love," while frequently covered by the media, are partly due to a lack of education about love itself. The opening of a love course represents a meaningful and brave innovation on this subject. Although the course may not be fully developed, it serves to arouse more attention from universities to the emotional education of their students. Tao Wuning: For university students whose view of life and its values are premature, their romantic relationships are often fragile. Therefore, it is necessary and important to establish a course on love to ensure that students' relationships are developed in the right direction. The new course will not be conducted in a teacher-dominated environment, but in a group discussion format, which will provide a platform for students to brainstorm on the methods of communicating in a relationship. It will also encourage students to learn traditional virtues such as respect. The theories to be taught such as love psychology and economics will inform students of the building blocks of a successful romantic relationship. In addition, social etiquette training and other practical lessons will enable students to contain emotions with rationality and restrain their behaviors with morals. Sun Ming. Offering a course on love not only represents big progress in university course reform, but also showcases the educational concept of putting students first. A love course cannot solve all kinds of problems existing in a relationship; however, it can at least inspire students to want to fall in love. To make it even more effective, universities should continue to improve the course. In addition to encouraging students to have discussions in class, they could also hire marriage experts from matchmaking agencies as advisors. Love courses should not only be about relationship skills but also about psychology, marriage and sexual psychology. Moreover, the necessary psychological counseling should be given to try to solve challenges the students are facing. Then these courses could become an effective method of emotional education and personality training.
