The following two excerpts are about free expression on the social networks by students. From the excerpts, you can find the justification of students' right to express freely but there have been consequences of their words and behavior. Write an article of NO LESS THAN 300 WORDS, in which you should: 1. summarize the different opinions about free expression on the social networks by students, and then 2. express your opinion towards whether students should watch out their words when posting online. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Write your article on ANSWER SHEET FOUR. Excerpt 1 Watch out Your Words Growing up in an era when social media engulf the lives of teenagers everywhere, many students neglect the fact that what they post online can have an impact on where they attend college and their future. Some teenagers post freely on their social media accounts without realizing the dangers and the repercussions of their actions. SAT and ACT tutor Adam Moss of Broward Tutorial Services said that while not all college admissions officers are checking into a potential student's social media page, some certainly are. "Not all colleges will look into a social media profile, but pictures of drinking and partying are obviously problematic," Moss said. "Colleges want students who will be 'non-problematic' members of their campus communities, and cyber-bullying, negative postings about schools and teachers, and things like posting fight videos or not safe for work (NSFW) material are bad ideas. " Moss believes that maintaining a positive image on social media is very important not only for students, but for those competing for jobs as well. "Managing one's image is, like it or not, a vital piece of succeeding in today's competitive world," Moss said. "Businesses and celebrities spend huge sums of money to manage their public personas, and in a way, students should be their own ' image consultants'. Many of the things that teenagers think are private and difficult for an expert to track down, are silly mistakes that can leave permanent trails online. " Excerpt 2 Free Speech on the Social Media Cypress Bay junior Eli Nir doesn't think posting on social media is worth it in today's competitive society. " I have my own social media accounts," Nir said. "It's not a bad thing to be open about your life on social media, but it really just depends on the type of person you are. As long as someone doesn't post anything stupid, it shouldn't matter in the long run. " Cypress Bay High School adviser Shari Bush said students shouldn't be wary of what they post online solely for the reason of college applications, but they should really pay attention to the bigger picture, which is their future. "We live in a culture right now where everything is blasted out there for everyone to see. I think that there should be some humility and sensitivity about the stuff that some students post about themselves," Bush said. Zuckerman feels that overall, it's a personal decision on how a student wants his life to turn out, but she feels that it is better for her to hold back when posting on her social media sites. While some conservatives hold back the idea that students can post freely on the Internet, students themselves argue for their own rights of free speech protected by the Constitution. Besides, they say that they post photos about their self-images and details of their lives just to broadcast their pride and joy to the world. "I think it's just to get attention and to find your likes and make friends with them," explains Lily, a 14-year-old in NY. As pointed by her, posting and getting comments from the Internet enlarges their scope of finding a friend who shares the same interest and hobby.

The following two excerpts are about ethics of today's mass media, which, despite their huge influence, offer the readers more and more mindless mistakes. From the excerpts, you can find how such errors undermine media credibility, but there have been excuses and explanation of this phenomenon. Write an article of NO LESS THAN 300 WORDS, in which you should: 1. summarize the different opinions about the ethics of today's mass media, and then 2. express your opinion towards the ethics of today's mass media, especially whether we should have a stricter inspection on both the ethics and professionalism of them. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Write your article on ANSWER SHEET FOUR. Excerpt 1 Errors Will Undermine Media Credibility Many Chinese media outlets, old and new, are in the spotlight not for some praiseworthy cause, but for some unbelievable mistakes they have made in their reports. A Xinhua News Agency report on the meeting between President Xi Jinping and US President Barack Obama on Nov. 30 ended up with a typo in its headline—using " Omaba" instead of Obama. Although it was corrected half an hour later, the damage had already been done, as a slew of news websites, including the central government's gov. cn, reposted the original report without noticing the typo. Worse, some local newspapers carried the same mistake the next day even though they had enough time to correct it. Another slap in the face of Chinese media was the use by some main stream media outlets of some photographs that had been " photoshopped". The same mistake has been evident in the reports on the tricky online verification procedure to buy railway tickets. The only website in the country allowed to sell train tickets, 12306. cn, has received many complaints against the verification code test designed to prevent auto logins or malicious software from purchasing tickets. The test usually comprises questions with multiple answers requiring customers to match some images with descriptions, but many people have struggled to choose the correct answers because of the low resolution of the tiny pictures and ambiguous questions. Some frustrated Internet users edited the verification pictures to mock the system, creating fake questions, such as clicking on "all the pictures of handsome men" , and "all cartoon characters that are short" to show how absurd the questions could be. Many media reports assumed these pictures to be real. Excerpt 2 Ethics of the Mass Media The recent inaccuracies in media reports, even the governmental ones have a lot to do with the lack of proper checking of facts and Internet-based epidemic of mindless mistakes. Yet the use of new media is not to blame, because similar mistakes were being committed before the Internet era. But by quickening the pace of communication, the Internet has allowed more people to notice the mistakes and comment on what is wrong with the reports. Of course, media outlets that follow professional ethics and cross-check facts should be trusted and respected, but even the strictest fact-checking system can only reduce, not eliminate mistakes in publications. The flawed reports send a rather dangerous message—that some reporters and editors seem to have lost their sense of independence. In other words, they are not sure of or have forgotten the core values of the mass media, the kind of service they are obliged to offer and, more importantly, the uniqueness of their service. The trend of homogenizing topics and contents is a result of the convenient Internet-oriented communication as well as the insufficient protection of the copyright of news stories. In the notorious case of misspelling the name of the American President by the Xinhua News Agency, the editors failed to fulfill their duty of checking facts. The pursuit of authenticity, a crucial element of journalism, should be based on rational judgment and firsthand information, rather than blindly copying from "authoritative" sources. But in the age of "Internet Plus" and big data, news production has to be faster and more integrated than what it used to be, therefore it is really hard to be accurate and efficient at the same time. Besides, readers pay more attention to the general contents of die news rather than the detailed bits of information which is being updated almost every five or ten minutes. So it is understandable to make small errors like misspelling.

(1)She almost did not run. Christine Williams admits mat now. She could barely put one foot after another following the wake for her sister, who had died in an automobile accident. But she did run. With the cheers of friends and strangers reaching her heart, Williams set a C. W. Post record nine days ago in Boston. Now she will run again, on Saturday in the national Division II cross-country championships in Evansville, Ind. She wanted to be sure she was doing the right thing by running. She was the middle of three sisters, between Kerry, who is 25, and Jennifer, who was 18. (2)Just going through any motions was hard enough, but Christine Williams wanted to know if she should put on her uniform and her shoes and run through the woods on an autumn afternoon, in the awful gaping time between her sister's wake and her funeral. "I kind of got upset beforehand," Williams admitted Monday. Not a chatterbox under normal conditions, she now holds herself me best way she can, the fewer words me better. She almost walked away from the start line. But her friend Angela Toscano, who had flown up to Boston with her, directly from me wake, was standing near the line and talked her through it. "She said my sister would have wanted me to run," Christine said. And that was enough to get her started. (3)The accident happened just after midnight on Nov. 4. Four young women were driving in an unfamiliar area of Long Island in Eastport, N.Y., when one of mem apparently ran a yield sign, and the car was hit by another vehicle. Heather Brownrigg of Islip and Jennifer Williams died, and their friends April Brown and Kaci Moran, each from Bay Shore, were treated at a hospital and released. The driver of the other car also walked away. "Two girls did survive," Jennifer's famer, Ed, said with the positive tone of a parent who knows that every daughter's life is precious. (4)The crash made the papers. April Brown was charged with driving while intoxicated and driving without a license. The family could have done without the remarks in The New York Post that the four friends were known as "party girls." Ed Williams said of his youngest daughter: "I never knew her to drink, and I never knew her to take drugs. They probably did stop and drink a few beers." At the wake on Nov. 6, Brown was welcomed by the Williams family. "It was a little hard," Ed Williams said, "but it was an accident. Nobody was to blame, really. Jennifer just wasn't lucky." (5)The family had to make a decision. Ed and Debbie Williams have barely missed a track meet of Christine's since she gave up cheerleading midway through Bay Shore High to concentrate on running. The wake began Saturday evening. The next day Christine was to run with the Post cross-country team at the regional meet. "Her mom said it was about the team," said Rich Degnan, the Post coach. "They were worried about letting down the team." Degnan and Post officials offered a car service and tickets on the last flight to Boston on Saturday night for Christine and Toscano. When they arrived at the hotel, the entire team was waiting up for her. (6)Everybody knew about it at the regional meet. Degnan had to arrange for the flexibility of an alternate, just in case Christine could not go. The other teams agreed, unanimously. Not only that, but they all rooted for Christine. Runners and coaches and family members, wearing a multitude of team colors, all cheered for the Post runner in green and yellow. "There was a lot of positive energy flowing," Degnan said. "If their runner couldn't win, they wanted Christine to win." (7)Several times during the race, Christine felt she could not continue. But then she heard her friends and all those other people, those strangers from other colleges, calling her name. She thought about Jennifer. And she ran. She finished fourth in 22 minutes 58 seconds, breaking the Post record for the six-kilometer distance by 15 seconds. And although the Post team did not qualify for the nationals, Christine did. (8)The parents and the older daughter will fly to Indiana to watch Christine run in the nationals at 1 p.m. on Saturday. They surely know this race is keeping them going. "I'm just taking it one day at a time," said Christine, who admitted she has been feeling the stress. "I want to say, I'm just very proud of her," Ed Williams said. "I knew she had ability but when the accident happened, I was concerned. She did beyond what I thought. I just hope she has one good race left."

Some Chinese universities are now opening to the public. However, whether university libraries should be open to the public is still a controversial issue. What's your opinion? Read the excerpts carefully and write your response in NO LESS THAN 300 WORDS, in which you should: 1. summarize briefly the different opinions about this issue; 2. give your comment. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Write your article on ANSWER SHEET FOUR. Excerpt 1 The Media The Beijing News: It's great for university libraries to offer free entry to the public. But at the same time, it will make the management work more difficult and the limited book and space resources in university libraries might be further squeezed. Thus, the government may consider offering some subsidies to universities as incentives to encourage more libraries to join the library alliance. However, only depending on universities and the government will not ensure the sustainable development of the free entry policy. Therefore, it's necessary to absorb some social institutions and welfare organizations. For example, it's a good idea to set up a community club that brings together resources of nearby universities and even middle schools. Local residents can use these resources as long as they pay a small sum of money to be members of this club. Community residents should also have the opportunity to serve as volunteers in university libraries. Guangming Daily: When university libraries offer free entry, it does not mean that readers can enter these libraries without any certificates. People must at least show their ID cards to enter university libraries. On campus, even for students and teachers in universities, they still need things like student certificates to enter their university libraries. Without basic requirements, university libraries will fall into kind of mess in many aspects. When the public is provided with free entry to university libraries, one striking problem is that they will surely compete with university students and teachers for the already limited books and space. In this sense, it requires the government to increase inputs in university libraries so that the free entry policy can be well implemented. If libraries find it impossible to satisfy both students' and the public's demands, students should be put first. After all, in China, the purpose of university libraries is to serve students and teachers for their learning, teaching and academic research. Excerpt 2 The General Public Donald: If resources in university libraries are not fully utilized, it will be a big waste. Some people worry that free entry to these libraries will lead to overcrowded libraries on campus, but this is not certain.Maybe not a single outsider would go to visit university libraries. Nowadays, fewer and fewer people in China are interested in reading books. For example, you can always see people playing games on their cellphones, instead of reading. Thus, opening university libraries to the public is actually a way to encourage more people to pick up books. Daniel: To offer the public free entry to university libraries is now a mainstream idea. The question now is how to realize the openness. Nowadays, libraries' resources are kept in the form of databases. The traditional way of borrowing and lending books needs manpower and capital input. I think the most effective way is to open these databases to the public. Yang: Libraries' openness to the public needs those universities' proper arrangement. It's necessary to avoid any conflict between students' use of libraries and that of the public. It needs a balance between ensuring the service to students and teachers and providing service to outsiders.

As the number of Chinese people owning private cars is expected to continuously rise as a result of their growing wealth, greater awareness of traffic rules and stronger enforcement of them are urgently needed to reduce incidents of dangerous driving and road rage. Read the excerpt carefully and write your response in about 300 words, in which you should: 1. summarize briefly the author's opinion about road rage; 2. give your comment. Marks will be awarded for content relevance, content sufficiency, organization and language quality. Failure to follow the above instructions may result in a loss of marks. Road Rage Threatens Safety China is now the world's largest car market, but unfortunately this has failed to result in a corresponding improvement in driving skills and road etiquette among its drivers. More than 17 million cases of road rage have been handled so far this year, the traffic authorities said on Monday, a day before the Fourth National Traffic Safety Day. Driving angrily has proved a big contributor to frequent road accidents and casualties. In 2013, altogether 80,200 accidents were attributed to anger behind the wheel, a 4. 9 percent year-on-year increase and the number rose by 2.4 percent in 2014. A video was recently posted on the Internet showing a driver in Heilongjiang Province, Northeast China, intentionally impeding an ambulance that was responding to an emergency. This sparked intense discussion about the lack of respect for traffic rules among Chinese drivers and their lack of basic road safety awareness. By the end of October, China had 276 million registered vehicles, 160 million of which are cars, and the number of drivers is 322 million. The growing congestion as a result of increased car use has also led to more drivers violating the traffic regulations. China has the highest number of road accident fatalities in the world, many of which have been directly attributed to drivers' bad habits and their lack of respect for traffic rules. The continuing rise in the number of drivers means that greater efforts have to be made to raise drivers' traffic awareness and prompt them to obey traffic rules so as to reduce the number of killers on the road. Road rage is aggressive or angry behavior by a driver of an automobile or other motor vehicle. Such behavior might include rude gestures, verbal insults, deliberately driving in an unsafe or threatening manner, or making threats. Road rage can lead to altercations, assaults, and collisions which result in injuries and even deaths. It can be thought of as an extreme case of aggressive driving. The following are common manifestations of road rage: generally aggressive driving, including sudden acceleration, braking, and close tailgating, cutting others off in a lane, or deliberately preventing someone from merging, sounding the vehicle's horn or flashing lights excessively, and driving at high speeds in the median of a highway to terrify drivers in both lanes. More than 17 million cases of road rage have been handled by police in China this year as authorities struggle to teach drivers in the world's largest car market better road etiquette. On the eve of National Traffic Safety Day, which fell on Wednesday, the Ministry of Public Security described road rage as a major traffic safety issue. Chinese traffic police have been busy handling cases involving road rage like arbitrary lane changes and dangerous overtaking this year as the world's largest car market struggles to equip its drivers with better road etiquette. Write your response on ANSWER SHEET FOUR.

As a popular form of leisure and entertainment, travel is what many people look forward to when they are free. At the same time many tourist attractions do promotion to attract travelers by all means, as tourism supports local economic development by generating a large amount of revenue. The following is an article about tourism. Read it carefully and write an article of NO LESS THAN 300 words, in which you should: 1. summarize briefly the main idea of the article, and then 2. give your comment. So many places in the world rely heavily on tourism as a key source of income and employment nowadays as well as a way of showing off national and local heritage, plus perceived successes. Unfortunately, tourism can also be a source of problems too, especially if it is not managed correctly.Advantages of Tourism It brings in money. This is probably the main advantage of tourism and the reason why it has been promoted so much in recent years in developing countries especially. Even in many developed countries, the income generated can make up a significant proportion of national income. It provides jobs for the locals. Hotels, bars, transport, shops and restaurants all need staffing and tourism can provide much-needed employment for people. It raises the profile of the place generally. Tourism gives a locality the chance to show itself off and raise its profile in the world. It can provide an incentive for investment in infrastructure such as roads and rail networks, as well as funding local medical and education facilities. Tourism can provide economic incentives for a place to preserve, regenerate, and upkeep their urban and wildlife areas.Disadvantages of Tourism Tourists often cause environmental damage, with things like pollution and forest fires. Even if tourists behave responsibly, the sheer number of them can cause problems. Things like ancient buildings, monuments and temples often struggle to cope with the vast amounts of tourist traffic and suffer wear and tear, or damage. The commercialization of culture can undermine the soul of a tourist destination. Local traditions that have a rich cultural heritage are reduced to wearing costumes and putting on acts for the tourists in return for money. Tourists can often lack respect for local traditions and culture, not following local dress standards, for example, or getting drunk in public, or behaving rudely or inappropriately towards locals. Although often jobs are created by tourism, most are relatively low level, such as bar work, hotel service, restaurant serving, etc. with little prospect for promotion. Tourism jobs are quite commonly seasonal and insecure with no extra benefits, such as pensions, sick pay, or health care. Some areas can be packed with visitors during busy times, and then virtually deserted for many months. Money can end up being directed to tourist areas when it could be used more effectively elsewhere in a country — the locals who don't live in specific tourist areas miss out and suffer relative decline. Often much of the tourism industry (travel companies, hotels, etc.) in a developing country is actually owned by big foreign companies, who make the major profits, leaving local businesses with relatively little benefit. Tourism can create an imbalance where it becomes so successful that other forms of income generation are neglected and an economic dependence on tourism forms. This is fine in the good times, but can leave the country vulnerable to economic ruin, if it suffers political upheaval, terrorist attacks, or natural disasters, and tourism consequently dips or dries up altogether.

If a mixed traffic system was in the place, automated driving【S6】______could begin whenever the driver was on suitably equipped roads. Whenever special-purpose lanes were available, the car could join 【S7】______existing traffic in two different ways. One method would use a special onramp. As the driver approached the point of entry for the highway, devices installed on the roadside would electronically check the vehicle todetermine their destination and to ascertain that it had the proper 【S8】______automation equipment in good working order. Either approach would harmonize the movement of new entering 【S9】______vehicles with those already traveling. Automatic control here shouldallow smooth merging. When it comes to job hunting, many college graduates may get caught in a dilemma: to work in a big city, a small city, a small town or even a village? The following are people's opinions on which place to choose for climbing the ladder of career. Read them carefully and write an article of NO LESS THAN 300 words, in which you should: 1. summarize briefly the opinions, and then 2. express your opinion towards where to choose to work after graduation.subhal2 I will choose big cities as I know there are more chances in big cities. I am very much concerned about my career, so I like to work in big city. Also I was born and brought up in metro town, so I like to live in big city where everything is easily available.colourless My hometown is a small city and I enjoy the peace and freedom there. Besides, there is a friendly atmosphere for every person knows others well. When someone was strapped in trouble, others would try to help them out to their best, which is really quite touching. From my perspective, it is the same with the condition of work. But now I come to a city to attend university. I sometimes feel bad just because it is so crowded. People walk by each other and even never show a little smile. Their difference estranges one another, which probably leads to disharmony of workplace. Thus, after graduation, I will work in small city without hesitation.diansinta I prefer big cities where I can grow and learn a lot. I have easy access to book stores, museums and equal friends who can understand what I'm talking about. My mom and dad are in another island of a small city but we used to live in the big city. And now my father has got his pension, so he goes back to hometown. People there lead a life of slow pace. So is that of work. And basic living and recreation facilities such as cinemas are insufficient. I don't see the chances that I can achieve the goal of career planning.diillu I prefer to work in big cities. As is known to all, big cities would provide more facilities. There will emerge more excellent job opportunities as well as other different services like hospital favorable for living.nkhanna I am from a small city and I love that place. However, I am married in a big city, which seems so busy every day. Nobody has time for each other. I know in big cities lots of opportunities are there for people to climb the ladder of career and get a better living standard. However, I feel those people in big houses are exposed to too much pressure to appreciate their life while in small cities people tend to live a happy life. If given a chance I would definitely like to work in a small city and live my life fully.prettyhanan I would like to work in a small city. The reason is that I love peace instead of a crowded life with job, children, husband and house. Although it's quite hard to succeed, I think I can make it because I face my computer every day with the aim to be a business woman. That is not a big problem I guess.

The question of whether languages shape the way we thinkgo back centuries; Charlemagne proclaimed that " to have a second【S1】______language is to have a second soul". But the idea went out of favor to【S2】______scientists when Noam Chomsky's theories of language gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s. Dr. Chomsky proposed thatthere was a universal grammar for all human languages—essentially,【S3】______that languages don't really differ from one another in significant ways. And because languages didn't differ from one another, thetheory went, it made none sense to ask whether linguistic differences【S4】______led to differences in thinking. The search for the linguistic universals yielded interesting【S5】______data on languages, and after decades of work, not a single【S6】______proposing universal has withstood scrutiny. Instead, as linguists【S7】______probed deeper into the world's languages(7,000 or so, only afraction of them analyzed), innumerable predictable differences【S8】______emerged. Of course, just because people talk differently doesn't necessarily mean they think differently. In the past decade, cognitive scientists have begun to measure not just how people talk, also how they think, asking whether our understanding of even such【S9】______fundamental domains of experience that space, time and causality【S10】______could be constructed by language.
