Today we are sure that the mail will be sent every day to our door. But in the early days, no one could be sure about where—or when—the mail would arrive.
There is a stump(树桩) of a big tree in the state of Washington. It was once a "post office". Because people needed a place for the mail carrier(信使) to leave their letters, they found a tree at the cross of roads and cut it down ten feet from the ground. Then they
hollowed it out
and covered it with something. Inside, they put many boxes. Each box had a family's name on it. The mail carrier could leave letters there for everyone.
Even earlier, when there was no post services, people gave their letters to any traveler going in the right direction. Often they gave them to a traveling shoe maker. The traveler might stop in a small hotel and he would leave the letters there. But the letters stayed there until the person to receive them happened to come by and stop at the hotel.
Today an airmail letter can travel across the world in much less time than that. And you know that your letter will go where you want it to go, and when.

What does the woman want to have?
It takes______two days to finish this report.
In 1870s rich people began to speak of spending weekends in the country visiting friends. For most people back then, however, the workday was six days long. Car maker Henry Ford was the first person in the United States to start a workweek of 5 days. He did that in 1926. By 1940 it had become common for most Americans to work 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. For many people Saturday night is the happiest time of the weekend and the week. Anything and everything can happen(发生)on Saturday night. People go dancing; they visit friends and have parties. They drink much alcohol(酒精饮料).They sleep, and watch television. People do the same things on other nights of the week too, but they do them more often on Saturday night. On Saturday night cinemas sell more tickets. It is also the biggest night for places that sell alcoholic drinks. That is one reason why most fights and car accidents(事故)are on Saturday night. Is there anything people do not like about the weekend? A study of 1,000 Americans found that half would gladly have a more day of free time. The only thing wrong with the weekend, they think, is that it does not last longer.
