Without the atmosphere, there would be
no weather, no wind, rain, snow, or clouds. Air is all around us; we live at the
bottom of a great ocean of air. It is invisible, but we can feel it when it
moves. There are miles of all above us, pressing down with great weight on the
earth and everything on it. Because air presses down on us from all directions
at the same time, and because we are able to bear (忍受) this weight, we do not
seem to feel it. But scientists have proved that air has this weight, and that
anything that has weight creates (产生) a force called pressure. As changes in air
pressure take place, they make air move. Air is a gas that
expands (膨胀) when heated, gets lighter, and moves upward. When air is cooled, it
gets heavier, sinks close to the earth's surface, and flows like water in a
great river. As warm air rises, cold air rashes to take its place. Thus winds
originate (起源). The winds that blow high above us are caused by the warmer air
running away from colder air. The wind we feel near the earth's surface is the
heavy colder air trying hard to catch the warmer air. Changes in temperature
cause the air to move. And of course there are many changes, so air
movements are taking place practically all the
time.
单选题I was quite at a loss ______ next.
单选题The lake lay before me, blue and peaceful, in the evening (36) . On either side the mountains rose sharply surrounding it in a kind of bowl. A few sheep (37) their sides here and there and a cow was (38) with eating on the lower slopes. The place was so far away, so untouched by human work that it seemed the very place to (39) . Even Higgs, I thought, won't be able to find me here. I sat down by the edge of the lake, and pulled (40) my shoes and socks, put my (41) in the water. It was cold, like ice. 单选题Culture (文化) unchangingly molds (影响) human biology. Culture encourages certain activities, discourages others, and sets standards of physical health and attractiveness (吸引力). Sports activity, which is influenced by culture, helps build phenotype (具有共同类型的一类有机物). American girls are encouraged to pursue and so, they do well in -competitive track and field, swimming, and diving. Brazilian girls are encouraged to avoid public activities. In Brazil fewer females swim, drive, and run than is the case in America. Culture standards of attractiveness also affect athletic activities. Americans run or swim not just to compete but to keep trim (漂亮的) and fit (健康的). Brazil' s beauty standards accept more fat, especially in female buttocks and hips. Years of swimming mold an enlarged upper torso, a massive neck, and powerful shoulders and back. Successful women swimmers tend to be big, strong, hard and bulky, but Brazilian culture says that women should be soft. A Brazilian beauty should have big hips and buttocks rather than big shoulders. So Brazil seldom sends female swimmers or runners to the Olympics. The countries that produce successful female swimmers are the United States, Germany, and Russia or any other one but not Latin countries including Brazil.
单选题 The first time I heard the actual London Bridge was in Lake
Havasu City, Arizona, I thought it was a joke. A stupid joke at that. I mean,
what sort of {{U}}moron{{/U}} would take a perfectly good, perfectly famous bridge
and move it halfway around the world to some no-name town in northwest Arizona?
Back in 1962 when all this started, Lake Havasu City was nothing. A couple of
shops, a couple of homes, and no tourism at all. It turns out
Robert McCulloch is the moron in question, and he wasn't quite the moron I
thought he was. His 2.45 million dollar investment(投资) in the 130-year-old
bridge—which the British government was selling because it was about to fall
into the Thames(晤士河)—ended up being the investment of a lifetime. You see
McCulloch was a real businessman, among other things, and his money paid off
big. He turned Lake Havasu into one of the most visited tourist attractions in
Arizona. It took nine long years to take down the bridge, ship
it brick by brick to the middle of nowhere, and build it up again. When it
finally did open up in 1971, it was a huge deal covered by the international
press. The bridge is now a popular tourist attraction, and
there's even a mini "English Village" at the foot of the bridge with
souvenirs(纪念品) and real British food so you can have a good old time.
Nowadays Lake Havasu is a busy town with a population of about 56,000
citizens and another 2.5 million visitors each year. Most of that is during
spring break when the town overflows with energetic boys and girls. Even MTV and
the Girls Gone Wild people get in on the action. All thanks to that little
bridge. I don't know about you, but I'm saving my pennies. When
the French get sick of that Eiffel Tower, I'll be the first to put money on it.
It'll look great in my backyard.
