单选题C Centuries ago, mountains were thought to be the home of evil spirits, it was not until 200 years ago that men began to climb the highest peaks (山峰). At first, men climbed alone or with one or two friends. However, as men climbed higher and more dangerous mountains a team who could work together became very important. Climbing a giant mountain takes weeks and even months. The men must set up many camps as they climb upward. The climbers must take tons of supplies with them. They need food, warm clothes, and tanks of oxygen (氧气). In 1950, a team of men from England set out conquering (征服) Mt. Everest. They had to plan carefully. As yet, no man had been able to reach the top. Mt. Everest was far away from highways and railroads. Men from the neighboring country of Nepal joined the mountain-climbing party. They would help carry the needed supplies through the mountains. Each man could carry 250-pound pack. The people of Nepal had carried goods across those mountains for centuries. A helper who took packs to the highest peeks earned the name "tiger". Together, the helpers and climbers worked their way up Everest. At last, two climbers went ahead. They pushed on to the top. The highest mountain in the world had been conquered.

单选题I found myself facing a dry-cleaning store which had once been one of the best restaurants in New York. On Sundays the old man would take my mother and me for dinner. There had been a balcony (走廊) where a baker (面包师) in a tall white hat baked fresh bread, and been whenever a customer entered, the baker would look down and put in a fresh batch (一炉). I could see the manager who always sat down with us while we ate. He had some disease, I suppose, because the right side of his face was swollen (肿的) out like a balloon, but he always wore a hard wing collar and a white tie, and never seemed sick. A Negro with a moustache was looking through the store window at me. For a moment I was anxious to go and tell him what l remembered. I did not go into the store, nor even toward our house, I went downtown instead and sat in my room, trying to read.

单选题It was the first snow of winter. Up until now, I had been able to dress myself for recess (课间休息), but today I would need some help. Miss king, my kindergarten teacher, may still remember this one. I managed to get into my snow pants, but I struggled with my jacket because it did not fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother. Finally it was time to have Miss King help me with my boots. She said, "By the end of winter, you will be able to put on your own boots. " I handed her my boots, and she managed to get the first one into place and then worked the second one on, too. I said, "They are on the wrong feet." She struggled to get the boots off and tried again. Then I said, "These aren"t my boots, they are my brother"s boots and I hate them!" Somehow, she managed to act as though I was not an annoying little girl. She pushed and shoved, less gently this time and the boots were returned to their proper place on my feet. Seeing the end of her struggle with me, she asked, "Now, where are your gloves?" I looked into her eyes and said, "I did not want to lose them, so I put them into the toes of my boots."
