单选题Scientists say they now have proof to support the old-fashioned advice that it's best to sleep on a problem. They say sleep strengthens the memory and helps the brain organize the masses of information we receive each day. Lead researcher Bob Stickgold at the Harvard Medical School said, "Sleep helps us draw rules from our experiences. It's like knowing the difference between dogs and cats. even if it's hard to explain. " The US research team studied how well students remembered connections between words and symbols (象征), reports New Scientist. They compared how the students performed if they had had a sleep between seeing the words and having the test, and if they had not slept. They found that people were better able to remember lists of related words after a night's sleep than after the same time spent awake during the day. They also found it easier to remember themes (主题) that the words had in common. But they forgot around one in four more themes if they had been awake. Prof. John Groeger, of Surrey University's Sleep Research Centre, said, "People have been trying for years to find out what the purpose of sleep is, as we know that only certain parts of it have a restorative (有助恢复的) value. " "We form and store huge numbers of experiences in the head every day, and sleep seems to be the way the brain deals with it all. /

单选题Will it matter if you don' t take your breakfast? Recently a test was given in the United States. Those tests included people of different ages, from 12 to 83. During the experiment, these people were given all kinds of breakfasts, and sometimes they got no breakfast at all. Special tests were set up to see how well their bodies worked when they had eaten a certain kind of breakfast. The results show that if a person eats a proper breakfast, he or she will work with better effect than if he or she has no breakfast. This fact appears to be especially true if a person works with his brains. If a student eats fruit, eggs, bread and milk before going to school, he will learn more quickly and listen with more attention in class. Contrary to what many people believe, if you don't eat breakfast, you will not lose weight. This is because people become so hungry at noon that they eat too much for lunch, and end up gaining weight instead of losing. You will probably lose more weight if you reduce your other meals.

单选题Sleep is something we generally connect with living things. Of course, it is true that a tot of animals sleep, but scientists are not certain that primitive (原始的) forms of animal life like worms ever really sleep. On the other hand, animals such as bears sleep for 4 or 5 months every year. The amount of sleep that a human being needs depends on age, tile individual and possibly race. For example, doctors think pre-school children need between 10 and 12 hours a night; school children between 9 and 11 hours; and adults between 7 and 9 hours. There are cases of old people who only sleep between 2 and 3 hours a day and continue to be active and healthy. The sleep requirements Of different races also appear to be different. Japanese people, for example, sleep fewer hours than Europeans. It is not known whether mental activity (except dreaming) occurs when a person is asleep. However, it is certainly true that some people can wake up at a particular time. There are also stories about scientists who solve difficult problems during sleep, because their subconscious (潜意识的) minds continue working on the problem. Some types of nightmares are quite common: the dreamer is falling from a tree; or an animal is running after him. Some people say these two occur because man's ancestors (祖先) lived in trees and were in constant danger from wild animals.

单选题A man was mending a street lamp when he saw a pretty young woman and three children get into a car which was in the garden of a house near him. He saw that the car had a flat tyre, and tried to warn the woman, but it was too late-she was already driving the car out of the garden, and into the busy street. When she had got there, she stopped the car at the side of the street, got out and looked at the flat tyre. The children stayed in the car. Very soon another car stopped, and the driver offered to help her. The young woman accepted his offer, and the man changed the tyre for her. When she had thanked him and he had gone, she drove the car back into the garden, got out with the children and went back to her work in the house -with clean hands.

单选题Art should not be limited to a museum. "Art and creative elements (创造性元素) can be mixed into daily life," said Professor Cheng of the Fine Arts Department. Public art can be seen as a realization of Professor Cheng"s words above. It is simply artwork presented in the public space, where one could walk by any day. Connie Yu, a businesswoman, likes the idea of public art. "I like the idea of bringing art to people, rather than people to art." However, the idea of public art is not very well developed in Hong Kong. A walk through the central area only presents one with a limited number of public art pieces. Most of them seem to be more for the purpose of decoration than presenting art to the public. Also, people do not pay much attention to them. Alex Chan, a 34-year-old Hong Kong artist, said, "Public art is a great way to express yourself as an artist, to give something to people who don"t normally go to the museums, and to give them a break from their daily life. It is just a shame that it"s not so common in Hong Kong."

单选题{{B}}B{{/B}} Like all other mothers who have small children, 1, too, have to steal time--from my own children at home and from the children who know me as their teacher---just to put a few words down on paper. Many times I've wanted to write for myself, for other women, for my parents, for my husband, and especially for my children. I would have liked to leave a legacy (遗产) of words explaining what it has meant to have twins. One reason there is not a great deal written about being a mother of a new baby is that there is seldom a moment to think of anything else but the baby's needs. With twins, I did not have a spare hand to write with. Before my twins were born, my days were long but I had nothing to write about. After the twins' birth I did have something to write about, but I found myself facing not a pen or paper but milk bottles. During some nights, friends would visit. They would leave at 11 pm, heading for bed, and for us the night was only just beginning. With twins, there was really no night. Each feeding lasted a long time. At 1:00 am, each of them would begin crying with hunger. At 4:00 am, when I finally put them down, I headed for the kitchen and lighted a cigarette. I hadn't smoked for almost a year, but I felt I'd never needed it more. I was so sleepy and so tired that I didn't care. Two years have passed since then and we've managed to live through it all. My days are still very full and even now there isn't one evening when I put the twins down for the night that I don't breathe a sigh of relief. At last a little time for myself.
