单选题Culture determines what kind of thinking is important and what kind is not so important. Learners use the language, tools, and practice their culture to learn concepts. Although students have their individual learning styles, their learning styles are often combined with cultural values. For example, Navajo (North American Indians living in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah) children often learn first by observing and listening. Then, when ready, they continue learning on their own in cooperation with and under the supervision of an adult. In this way, the children learn all the skills they need. Navajo children speak very little during this process. In contrast, many African American children learn effectively by acting and performing. They like classroom activities such as oral presentations, role-plays, and dramatic performances. Lots of talking is useful for these students. Another way of learning is through reading and writing. Asian students generally need writing to support their learning, and therefore do well in classes where there is lots of reading and writing. It is common to see Japanese students pay special attention to the spelling of words they have learned. They are more comfortable seeing new materials than hearing them. Koreans are believed to be the most visual (can be seen) learners. So, although learning styles greatly determine how a person takes in new materials, one's culture also influences how he learns.

单选题So long as teachers fail to distinguish between teaching and learning, they will continue to undertake to do for children that which only children do for themselves. Teaching children to read is not passing reading on to them. It is certainly not endless hours spent in activities about reading. Douglas insists that "reading cannot be taught directly and schools should stop trying to do the impossible." Teaching and learning are two entirely different processes. They differ in kind and function. The function of teaching is to create the conditions and the climate that will make it possible for children to devise the most efficient system for teaching themselves to read. Teaching is also public activity; it can be seen and observed. Learning to read involves all that each individual does to make sense of the world of printed language. Almost all of it is private, for learning is an occupation of the mind, and that process is not open to public scrutiny. If teacher and learner roles are not interchangeable, what then can be done through teaching that will aid the child in the quest (探索) for knowledge? Smith has one principal rule for all teaching instructions. "Make learning to read easy, which means making reading a meaningful, enjoyable and frequent experience for children. " When the roles of teacher and learner are seen for what they are, and when both teacher and learner fulfil them appropriately, then much of the pressure and feeling of failure for both is eliminated. Learning to read is made easier when teachers create an environment where children are given the opportunity to solve the problem of learning to read by reading.
单选题Most of you would probably say that what makes you truly happy is your family and the love you share in your relationships, and I couldn"t agree more. But money comes into play in those relationships.
When I talk about money this way to a group, there is always someone who comes up to me and says, "Suze, you are so wrong. Money isn"t the key to life—this is!" At which point their wallet flies open and they show me a photo of their family.
That"s when things get interesting, because I start asking them questions: Did you take that photo with your own camera? It looks like a beautiful beach, was the photo taken on a family vacation? Do you hope to help those beautiful boys and girls go to college?
As their answers are "yes", I ask them how they provide all of that for their family. That"s when they understand that I had it right.
I totally agree that family and friends are of great importance to our well being; without meaningful relationships, there"s no chance of ever being truly happy. That"s why, every Saturday night, I end my CNBC show with the following words: "People first. Then money. Then things."
How we deal with the money we have also plays into our happiness. Over the past few decades (十年), the percentage of Americans who say they"re happy hasn"t changed much, while at the same time the average income has doubled. So we have more money, but we"re not much happier on average.
A paradox (悖论)? Far from it. My sense is that while we"re making more money, we aren"t making more of the money we make. We have to pay for a lot of things, and we have to worry about saving for retirement (退休) in a way that our parents and grandparents never did. And as many of you know, it"s really hard to increase your happiness when you"ve got a lot of money worries.
Do you agree, or am I way
off base
? I"d love to know what do you think about the money/ happiness connection.

The winter holiday season is the most
festive (欢乐的) time of the year. Students from elementary school through college
have about two weeks' vacation , beginning shortly before Christmas and ending
soon after New Year's Day. Many families go away for the holidays, but those who
stay home have fun, too. There are many parties to cel- ebrate the birth of
Christ and the arrival of the new year. The spirit of Christmas
arrives about a month before the holiday itself. Late in November, street lights
and store windows are decorated (装饰) with Christmas colours of red and
green. Stores depend on Christmas shoppers for about one-fourth
of their yearly sales. Christmas is expensive. To earn extra money for gifts,
inDecember many Americans get part-time jobs. Many people make monthly
bank deposits (存款)in special Christmas accounts so that they will have enough
money for a nice Christmas. The most beautiful and meaningful
parts of the holiday take place at home and in church. Many families go to
church on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning. After that, they gather around
the tree and open their gifts. Then they sit down to enjoy a Christmas dinner—
turkey (火鸡) or ham, sweet potatoes, vegetables and cranberry sauce
(酸果蔓酱).
单选题It was the first snow of winter. Up until now, I had been able to dress myself for recess(课间休息), but today I would need some help. Miss king, my kindergarten teacher, may still remember this one. I managed to get into my snow pants, but I struggled with my jacket because it did not fit well. It was a hand-me-down from my brother. Finally it was time to have Miss King help me with my boots. She said, "By the end of winter, you will be able to put on your own boots." I handed her my boots, and she managed to get the first one into place and then worked the second one on, too. I said, "They are on the wrong feet". She struggled to get the boots off and tried again. Then I said, "These aren't my boots, they are my brother's boots and I hate them!" Somehow, she managed to act as though I was not an annoying little girl. She pushed and shoved, less gently this time and the boots were returned to their proper place on my feet. Seeing the end of her struggle with me, she asked, "Now, where are your gloves?" I looked into her eyes and said, "I did not want to lose them, so I put them into the toes of my boots./

Reading is not the only way to gain
knowledge of all the work in the past. There is another way which may be called
experience. College students will find that every craftsman (工匠) has something
to teach and will generally teach gladly if they don't look down on him. The
information from the craftsman differs from that in textbooks and papers because
that its theoretical part -- the explanations of why things happen -- is
frequently quite strange. But the demonstration (示范) of what happens, and how it
happens are correct even if they are in completely unscientific words. Presently
the college students will learn, in this case also, what to accept and what to
reject. Another source of knowledge is the vast store of
traditional practices handed down from father to son, or mother to daughter in
old country customs. M1 this is very difficult for a college student to examine,
for much knowledge and personal experience is needed here to separate good
plants from wild grass. The college student should learn to realize and remember
how much of real value science has found in this wide, confused wilderness and
how often scientific discoveries existed in this area long
ago.
