单选题Disposing (处理) of waste has been a problem since humans started producing it. As more and more people choose to live close together in cities, the waste-disposal problem becomes increasingly difficult. During the eighteenth century, it was usual for several neighboring towns to get together to select a faraway spot as a dump site. Residents or trash haulers (垃圾托运经营者) would transport household rubbish, rotted wood, and old possessions to the site. Periodically (定期的) some of the trash was burned and the rest was buried. The unpleasant sights and smells caused no problem because nobody lived close by. Factories, mills, and other industrial sites also had waste to be disposed of. Those located on rivers often just dumped the unwanted remains into the water. Others built huge burners with chimneys to deal with the problem. Several facts make these choices unacceptable to modem society. The first problem is space. Dumps, which are now called landfills, are most needed in heavily populated areas. Such areas rarely have empty land suitable for this purpose. Property is either too expensive or too close to residential (住宅区的) neighborhoods. Long distance trash hauling has been a common practice, but once farm areas are refusing to accept rubbish from elsewhere, cheap land within trucking distance of major city areas is almost nonexistent. Awareness(意识) of pollution dangers has resulted in more strict rules of waste disposal. Pollution of rivers, ground water, land and air is a price people can no longer pay to get rid of waste. The amount of waste, however, continues to grow. Recycling efforts have become commonplace, and many towns require their people to take part. Even the most efficient recycling programs, however, can hope to deal with only about 50 percent of a city's reusable waste.

单选题Mr. Jones had a few days' holiday, so he said, "I'm going to the mountains by train." He put on his best clothes, took a small bag, went to the station and got into the train. Mr. Jones had a very beautiful hat on. He often put his head out of the window during the trip and looked at the mountains. But the wind pulled his hat off. Mr. Jones quickly took his small bag and threw it out of the window, too. The other people on the train laughed, "Is your hag going to bring back your beautiful hat?" they asked. "No," answered Jones. "But there is no name and no address on my hat, and there is my name and address on the bag. Someone is going to find both of them near each other and he is going to send me the bag and the hat./

Attention to detail is something
everyone can and should do--especially in a job market. Bob Crossley, a
human-resources expert, notices this in the job applications that come across
his desk every day. "It's amazing how many candidates fail themselves," he
says. Applications arrive with stains. Some candidates don't
bother to spell the company's name correctly. "Once I see a mistake, I eliminate
the candidate," Crossley concludes. "If they cannot take care of these details,
why should we trust them with a job?" Can we pay too much
attention to detail? Absolutely. Perfectionists struggle over little things at
the cost of something larger they work toward. "To keep from losing the forest
for the trees", says Charles Garfield, associate professor at the University of
California, "we must constantly ask ourselves how the details we're working on
fit into the larger picture. It' they don't, we should drop them and move to
something else." Garfield compares this process to his work as a
computer scientist at NASA. "The Apollo Ⅱ moon launch was slightly off-course 90
percent of the time," says Garfield, "but a successful landing was still likely
because we knew the exact coordinates of our goal. This allowed us to make
adjustments as necessary." Knowing where we want to go helps us judge the
importance of every task we undertake. Too often we believe what
accounts for others' success is some special secret or a luck. But rarely is
success so mysterious. Again and again, we see that by doing little things
within our grasp well, large rewards follow.

Animation means making things which are
lifeless come alive and move. Since earliest times, people have
always been astonished by movement. But not until this century have we managed
to take control of movement, to record it, and in the case of animation, to
retranslate it and recreate it. To do all this, we use a movie camera and a
projector (放映机). In the world of cartoon animation, nothing is
impossible. You can make the characters do exactly what you want them to
do. A famous early cartoon character was Felix the Cat, created
by Pat Sullivan in America in the early nineteen twenties. Felix was a wonderful
cat. He could do all sorts of things no natural cat could do like taking off his
tail, using it as a handle and then putting it back. Most of the
great early animators lived and worked in America, the home of the moving
picture industry. The famous Walt Disney cartoon characters came to life after
1928. Popeye the Sailor and his girl friend Olive Oyo were born at Max Ficischer
in 1933. But to be an animator, you don't have to be a
professional(专业人士). It is possible for anyone to make a simple animated film
without using a camera at all. All you have to do is to draw directly onto an
empty film and then run the film through a
projector.
